  1. I don't plan to wear it on an OPKIK trek..  Frankly, I don't know anyone who wears a uniform during camp Alaska other than the commissioners.

Most leaders around here only wear uniforms for indoor events period.  Anything outdoor is gear of the own preference.

I've seen all the studies as well, but in my experience they just don't add up.  With "performance" gear I'm hot in the summer and cold in the winter.

There is a reason natural fabrics have worked for years.  Cotton and wool for me.  If I wanted to wear something that will melt, I'd use trash bags - much more economical.

Besides - remember when polyester took off?  The 70s..   Do we really want to go back there?  :)

  2. The National Jamboree has been cancelled due to a public health crisis and children have been quarantined during periods other than that for disease outbreaks:

If you have a group of Scouts that can maintain social distancing and proper hygiene, then I marvel at your good luck.  My experience has been different.

It's not just the Scouts who would be affected: it's everyone else they come in contact with.

  3. I think we would have the same problems as the ladies.  In my Scout's experience, nothing beats a wagonload of product going around the neighborhoods.  Going online will be disastrous.  As DR pointed out, the product isn't generally the draw, it's supporting the Scout at the door, and everyone is looking for donations these days.

I like the energy bar idea.  We always did pretty well with the meat sticks as well.  I think the price point makes a huge difference in sales volumes.

  4. close to this subject, and I hope that it's not threadjacking..

    has anyone heard about pigeonpost.scouting.org?

That's the site that's linked out for the Den leader guides, but if you go the root site, it says "private, but coming soon"  ?

I understand $10 for a scout handbook, but the leader materials should be free as PDFs.

Cub leader guides are free PDFs now, at the new Den leader experience in Scoutbook.

i have yet to be unable to find anything out there with a little searching.

Our Council gives out flash drives with everything available if you take any training course.

  6. You would probably have more luck speaking to someone at a local hospital or ambulance company - or even the fire department rescue squad.  Many times they have expired items (don't ask how bandages expire...) that they can donate.

  7. You can catch any communicable diseases even though you are vaccinated.   They wear off as you age, and as the flu vaccines show us every year, some are not a effective as others.  Someone choosing not to vaccinate their child for whatever reason CAN impact my family's health.

The BSA should come out as pro vaccination.  It's as much a part of teaching about the public good as the citizenship and preparedness lessons we use daily with our Scouts.
