  1. Popcorn sales work well for us in our Pack and in our Troop and in our District and for the Council... We're grateful to have an opportunity for the boys to contribute and find that sharing with those that sponsor it isn't so much to ask. Candy bar sales work well for us also; privately arranged and on a smaller scale and the 'Show & Sell' aspect makes it a little easier all around, and keeping 1/2 the proceeds might make it a little more palatable for some. Run them both, stagger your sales periods around the GS Cookies, and let the boys pull their weight!
  2. Thanks but this turns out to be a 'bin item' and hallelujah found a copy at our Council of all places... Goes deeper than the G2SS I think but haven't seen it yet Some days it all works out - thanks
  3. Folks: Has anyone seen the BSA Caving Standard referred to in the G2SS? Think its 19-102A and a new one on me Can't find it anywhere (special order one presumes) and haaven't met anyone who has but remember that we're held to it... Expecting to see something like the early 'Topping Out' manual that we use for climbing and rappelling, but caving specific? Should this be called 'Bottoming Out' Has anyone got this as an electronic file? Thanks
  4. Eammon you surely do get around - Sounds like you were lucky to get out of there alive... Take some boys out for a hike and recall when things were simpler
  5. Ya know, the good Mr Podles is expressing an opinion, and I have the option of reading it or ignoring it. I really don't know why I should be motivated to 'attack' him for his thoughts and ideas(or support him for that matter) And one of the things that I really enjoy about him is that he's not constantly delivering long and intrusive diatribes about things that I'm not really interested in picking apart and reinterpreting for my own reasons. While I'm sure that Mr Podles would respond politely if contacted, he (like many) are content within themselves and feel no need for public displays
  6. Wish I had a fraction of the spare time that some folks exhibit...
  7. There is some serious wisdom being presented here, and a few more of the obvious posters to look forward to (intended seriously) We've all got these problem children, and I wonder if it doesn't point out a problem with same-age Patrols? Suddenly thinking about crossing over into our Troop 6 years ago and watching the group ahead of us go through all of this. The ones that have stuck around (about half) are pretty decent young men and I'm proud to have worked with them. Completely ignoring the Patrol of perfect angels that I crossed over with... The group behind us is still working thro
  8. We like a mix rather than a hard and fast policy; seems to keep things more responsive and fresher. Varies depending on the activity and the turnout which I think is a good thing. To the question, when the adults cook separately we invite the SPL and Troop Guides to join us at their option. I'd be concerned about the elitist aspect of this 'Staff Parol'. And our Venture Patrol is spread amongst the other Patrols within the Troop and has some separate activities - again variety.
  9. Thanks for a breath of fresh air Sturgen!
  10. Eammon I'd like to join you in the land of 'Take plenty of no notice' Seems like one of the more appropriate actions I've seen lately. And Hops you have to decide where to invest your time; I don't often find that the 'Issues and Politics' forum adds much to my life... And I also enjoy the new ideas that our youth bring to the table
  11. Think you've pretty well said it scoutldr. This, too, shall pass...
  12. Thanks for sharing this Eisely
  13. I think the Scouts Own aspect is a bit more important than getting the details completely correct for one specific denomination. I'd look for some sincerity and a basic understanding, presented in an appropriate manner for the circumstances. Granted that you're working with a larger crowd but there's nothing wrong with going back to the basics. We should be able to worship together occasionally without making too big a deal of things...
  14. Matua you're on the right track and I especially like the idea of rotating adults through the BoR... You might wish to consider introducing some of these adults to the District level of operations; training comes to mind and might have an appeal to some and there's always some of the annual programs ie Popcorn, Food & Clothing Drive etc. And didn't I hear it said once that once that almost every adult can serve as a skilled Merit Badge Counselor for something? Not all of this addresses keeping folks out from underfoot during a Troop meeting but might keep them productive and occupied at

  16. And why must this be a Troop activity again? Why can't you just go as a group of friends...
  17. FB love love your Square Knot Let no good deed remain unpunished! See you at the banquet
  18. Thank you Terry Some glitches aren't so bad...
  19. Sure is interesting to see this particular rock turned over... Anybody feeling a tiny bit embarassed about having one of your buttons pressed? Haven't you learned to consider the source of some of this nonsense? Or the reasoning(!) behind it? And ask yourselves how your reaction to BSA470Firstaider might have been different if he hadn't identified himself as a youth? I'm astounded at some of the reactions surfacing in this thread (but certainly not all of them) and ashamed to think that we serve the same program(s) together. We EARN respect from the youth that we serve, and while it may
  20. So with all of this said, and offering a general agreement, what can be done to address this? Attempt to constantly improve the example that we present? Work to create and maintain an environment that supports this type of learning and behavior? (thinking of Venture Crews here) Increase the level of challenge that we encourage our Scouts to work toward? And how to work this down to the younger set? Questions are easy, you'll note...
  21. Sorry, fat fingers; see below(This message has been edited by buffalo2)
  22. Almost off-topic and not expressed well; but took the time to watch our President last night. Notwithstanding the synchronized standing ovations, we saw a man who has determined the direction in which his country should be heading and is methodically executing a plan to bring it about. Even if you don't agree with the details and execution of some of his policies, it is impressive to watch and an example for us all. A breath of fresh air after watching some of the reactionary antics of the previous administration...
  23. Haven't looked too closely at the new Venture Quest program but looks like that the direction they're heading in...
