  1. Where should we go from here? - Dump all STEM activities and awards... yes some go to these events but most of the time BSA is simply working with s college or science center (in my area) to put those on. I know of 0 Scouts in my unit that join for STEM. - Sell learning for life to some external group. Yes it brings in some $ but it isn’t our core program and it distracts the professionals from supporting our key (Cub Scouts, Scouts, Venturing,Sea Scouts) - Reorganize staff by consolidating councils. Keep more of our $ at the District level. Let Districts have more local authority (no need to review every minor communication to the media with council, etc.). - Open Summit to the public and private investment. It is a money pit and few scouts will ever see it. Admit the mistake and move on. - Allow units to go coed. They will anyway and if the CO, unit leaders and parents all desire that model I see no reason to continue to block it. - G2SS & YPT ... safety is first but there are many threads here showing examples of how it can be overly burdensome. Probably not a major issue but something -Get some good young faces to represent the BSA... mentioned before The list goes on. BSA will survive and could thrive depending on what actions take place going forward.
  2. My Pack added two boys because their sisters joined. The girls joined because they were friends with other girls joining. When I talk with parents they mentioned they really like having one organization for all of their kids. My area parents have kids in sports all the time but scouts offers them the one opportunity to do something together as a family (Cub Scouts). It sounds like a commercial for Nationals but I see what they are talking about on the ground. My parent survey showed 0 negative comments about adding girls from a pack of 65 boys. They have complaints... but not about girls or most of the stuff brought up in these forums. The complaints are about individual leaders and tactical issues... not about the downfall of society. I expect my pack will continue to grow. We were 26 a few years ago. We are at 75 (after cross over and before recruiting). Now time to beg for FOS donations... 😀

    Adding Girls to Pack

@walk in the woods Have your DE watch this video. Just a few minutes in Anthony Berger states that the min number of girls is no longer a requirement.

    Adding Girls to Pack

Odd. That was an early adopter rule. I don’t believe that continues going forward.

    Adding Girls to Pack

There should be no minimum going forward unless you are starting a new unit. Min number for new unit (of any gender) is 5.

    Adding Girls to Pack

Final pack meeting of the year was held and out early adopter status is coming to a close. It was a fun pack meeting and the addition of girls is starting to become old news. Starting in 3 weeks the program is mainstream. We have started a parent survey about our Pack year. We didn’t specifically ask about girls (as we are only asking questions that we can and are willing to change). That said we did ask an open question about how this year went overall. Feedback is the typical mix of compliments and complaints... not one negative mention of girls in our Pack. That doesn’t mean those opinions don’t exist, only that other topics are really the primary interest of our parents. Based on what I have seen the changes had no negative impact at the Cub Scout level. I’m concerned about next year given the number of additional leaders I’ll need to find but we will manage.
  12. I have heard rumors of this change for several months and was wondering how they would handle the rank requirements. Girls will be in OA next year, so I’m curious how the lodges will adjust. Perhaps this can breath some new life in dormant ones but I’m curious how the vibrant ones will react.
  13. Jim Turley is reported to be the next President.
  14. @RememberSchiff Yes. There are Facebook comments from several scouters indicating the new Commissioner is female and one stated that she is Ellie.
  15. Just saw rumor that we will have a new National Commissioner and new President. Our current National Commissioner is LDS and will step down. Unconfirmed rumor (the best type of rumor for scouter.com) is that Ellie Morrison will be the new Commissioner. Supposedly to be announced Thursday.

    BSA Executive Salaries

My DE has always been available and helpful. He must put in 70-80 hours a week. He attends several Pack meetings a year, our annual planning meeting and gives guidance from Pack planning to various ceremonies. Yes we discuss FOS... but it’s respectful. We could definitely use some more District vouchers but my larger gripe is with council. They put on very few events and seem remote and only there to add bureaucracy. Perhaps I just don’t see their contributions. Also Note that not all executives have that 6 figure salary that is referenced.

    Cub Girl Uniform

Agreed on the cost. We, the pack, hand down neckerchiefs den by den. The pack buys extras when needed but for the most part we already have enough inventory. We don’t use hats or worry about specific belt buckles. We use jeans for pants as the Cubscout pants are made for giants. When our dens advance we perform a neckerchief ceremony... which is pretty simple. Our Tigers take off their necker and place it on the Lions... and that continues. So far we are sticking with the yellow wolf neckerchiefs but we will probably change this fall when Lions have yellow neckerchiefs.

    Cub Girl Uniform

Issue is with large packs. I have 80 Scouts and would like to direct them to their den line for various reasons. Neckerchief color is a great way to quickly and easily see a “lost” scout.

And I agree that they should change the neckerchief to red to match the traditional/current color of the patch. Today is confusing for some parents ... I have had some question the yellow neckerchief color. I was never a fan of the Wolf mix of colors (yellow hat/necker but red patch). Today we have Lions Yellow Patch, No Necker Tigers Orange Patch, Orange Necker Wolves Red Patch, Yellow Necker Bears Blue Patch, Blue Necker Webelos Tan/Blue Patch, Plaid Necker w/Webelos Logo Future we will have: Lions Yellow Patch, Yellow Necker Tigers Orange Patch, Orange Necker Wolves Red Patch, Red Necker Bears Blue Patch, Blue Necker Webelos Tan Patch, Plaid Necker w/Webelos Logo Seems to make sense. Understand that transitions will take time and we should allow those to use up their old uniforms/patches. That said, having patches, hat, necker & book colors align makes those aspects of the program easier to communicate to families new to BSA. This isn't life or death or really that critical, but I can completely see where National is coming from with this change.

    Cub Girl Uniform

Wolf patch has been red as far back as I can remember. It was always confusing why each patch color matched the neckerchief except Wolf (and perhaps Webelos). With introduction of Lions the change makes sense.
  21. Congrats. Councils are definitely excited about this change. @hawkins and I also are leaders at early adopter Packs.... so there are a few of us in the Scouter.com waters 😀 To summarize this thread. There is an early adopter FB page and the National Director for Cub Scouts released a video that mentioned any Pack that adds girls must have a female Cubmaster or Assistant Cubmaster AND every girls den must have a female ADL or DL. Both are changes to requirements from the Early Adopter program (which is fine). Outside of the video the official Cub Scout material/rules have only mentioned the DL/ADL requirement. It appears G2SS was updated and that may point to having ACM/CM female lead requirement or that may be covered by the DL/ADL requirement. I’m still waiting to hear official word. My Pack ends up following both of these “requirements” but I’m definitely not a fan of a requirement on the CM/ACM. It’s tough enough to find good leaders let alone adding gender requirements (especially female as the majority of our volunteers are male). Also frustrated that rules are not clear (if ACM/CM requirement is real) < 1 month away from full go live.
  22. Is this new language or was this from the Venturing requirement? I’m not sure if this means ADL/DL is sufficient or if we also need female CM/ACM. I’ll want to see that written specifically if required.
