  1. I see no problem with an Eagle who cannot swim. BSA is making exceptions to everything these days so why not this too. I know guys who suck at camping, cooking, first aid and other required skills so why should swimming be any different.
  2. Scouts see groups classes as easy badges. We know we can hide and still walk with a mb. I have friends that turn in the sheets like homework and expect the badges. I went to two when I was a scout and swore never to go again.
  3. My friend's parents were like this during the time we were in Scouts. Oddly enough his parents were not helicopter-like in everything he did, just scouts. And it wasn’t because they didn’t understand Scouting it was because Eagle was the goal and they wanted him to get it. This guy was a straight A student and perfectly capable of managing his own way but his parents kept managing scouts for him so he let them. He didn’t want to deal with his parents and trying to take back control. He tried once to have the Scoutmaster talk to them, which he did, but the effect only lasted a month or so
  4. I’m glad my Scoutmaster allowed us to explore. I know he took heat from some other leaders but his rule was we explored as a patrol. We had to have our ten essentials with us and we had to give a return time. His one rule was no swimming (bsa rules). Other than that we could do what we wanted. We basically hiked around and found a place to hang away from adults.
  5. I’ve been to Philmont the last two summer. They didn’t require use of purification tablets. If you had a filtration system you were fine. You might want a gallon water carrier or two to take to your dry site depending on your crew sizes and distance the next morning to water. We were glad we had one.
  6. We can’t fillet and grill fish for breakfast? There’s really a rule against that?
  7. Maybe if bsa actually had the plan in place before announcing the change they could avoid this reaction. We’re studying this in a business class right now. Successful companies don’t announce changes to products without having the detail and implementation plan done. This seems to be where bsa continues to have problems. It actually came up in class as a discussion point though few really knew or cared about bsa.
  8. Reading this thread reminds me of the Lumber Jack sketch.
  9. Speaking as someone recently out of Scouting you guys are way off about how guys think of girls. It’s constant. If they’re around we want to be around them and we will act different. Take school. Girls have been in my schools since kindergarten but it hasn’t changed how stupid I act around them. Maybe you’re speaking as parents or maybe things were just different when you were my age but I can tell you girls are all we talked about. Put them in the troop and that talk will only increase.
  10. I have no issues with the question. I was asked about the last election. I gave my answer and I could see a few of the people on the board want to try to change my mind but they simply accepted my answer and moved on. If we only throw soft pitches at our scouts you end up with kids who don’t know how to hit a curve ball. I’ve never understood how some parents can insist on their scouts taking the easy path when it comes to scouting, yet insist their kid go outside and practice their sports skills until their feet bleed. There’s nothing wrong with asking a tough question. It’s how the p
  11. As someone not so far past 15 I can tell you my generation was way more foolish around girls. We would do anything we thought was cool to get their attention. Without girls around to lure us away we were more likely to attend program. The plc went as far as to go back to a summer camp that had a cute lifeguard only to find out she wasn’t on staff anymore. We didn’t know staff changed nearly every year. All they had were college guys as life guards. We went to our mb classes all week and avoided the water front.
  12. My council always asks for money right at the same time my payments are due for summer camp or high adventure. My parents forced me to pay my own way for these events. It always struck me as odd that bsa would ask for money from people right after new scouts have paid their joint fees and spring dues, or right when current scouts are paying for summer camp. Who has money to spare but the really rich people?
  13. DNS for that domain is all screwed up. Trace route has it going all over the place. Looks like someone is rerouting their traffic or their main dns provider is having issues.
  14. I’ve played this game. It does no more for social interaction or team building or any other skill building than Halo, Minecraft or Second Son...or any video game for that matter. Teaming or clanning is easy for middle schoolers. Getting them to interact away from the console is the problem. Even guys my age have problems. Shoving a console in front of them doesn’t lead to getting them outside more and experiencing real scouting.
  15. I see responses with examples on how the scout can approach the problem. As a few people have said he can sit down and read the proposal with the beneficiary. That should outline the scope. If t doesn’t then that’s a problem the Scout, beneficiary and district rep who approved the project need to discuss. Doesn’t the advancement book/guide outline how to approach such issues? If the proposal wasn’t detailed enough then talking with the beneficiary and district seems the next logical thing to do. If there’s still no middle ground he would either have to do what the beneficiary wants o
  16. Yes this is it. My proposal and plan which I submitted to the beneficiary prior to doing my project outlined the final product complete with dimensions, materials used and whatever. When they asked me to do more we agreed it was beyond the scope of my project as outlined. I got my Troop to agree to do it as a service project. The beneficiary agreed to cover the materials but they signed off on my original project.
  17. I guess it depends on your unit. Instructors in mine would not sign off unless you could literally teach the skill back to them.
  18. Yup donations were up near double from previous years.
  19. If I care about something I learn it. If i don’t care it goes in one ear and out the other.
  20. It comes down to if someone cares about what they’re learning. If they don’t care they won’t retain it.
  21. We had a similar experience so our SM had a scout give the presentation. It was off the cuff and pretty funny. He had bullet points to read from but he got nervous so he winged it based on what he knew. He had everyone laughing.
  22. In my state girls can’t play on boys teams. Boys can’t go to girls schools. I don’t see anyone suing to get in either.
  23. How many of you are asking Girl Scouts to include boys? They exclude but get a pass? Look people stand up for what they believe in. If you throw stones and call ridiculous people who leave scouting over this but support the guys protesting in the nfl you might want to rethink your thought process. Having a principle on something means drawing a line that you will not cross. To you it may seem arbitrary but to me it may mean something. The line these people drew was adding girls to a program for boys. That’s not excluding anyone anymore than your son’s sports team barring girls. It’s done
  24. I’m on Venturing and our crew has been discussing the impact this decision will have on us. One question we had that we didn’t see answered by bsa was will Venturing even be around? Isn’t having Venturing redundant to the whole girls in scouting thing? By the way our female leaders have already said they will stay with Venturing and have no interest in Boy scouting.
  25. We discussed this today in one of my business classes. One of the suggestions made by an Eagle Scout was to have. The program in place, complete with training, books, uniforms and everything else a new scout or leader needs to get started and answer questions. We debated other options but the class settled on this as the best option.
