  1. Tell us, what is the most snow or coldest temperatures your scouts have ever encountered? Any tips? Do you all have tent stoves or heaters?
  2. Really? it seems pretty open on the form the boys fill out that over a certain amount, the money goes into the boys account which is usually to go for paying their individual summer camp fees. No scout actually touches any money.
  3. Its interesting in our area we have camped out in an old campground that was once previously the "black" camp. Our area desegregated in the 1950's but they kept that camp until the 1990's when it was sold off. Its still open as a campground however little remains except the main building. It was interesting, I'll look for the link but one time the news brought back some of the older black men who once were scouts there and they talked very fondly of the camp. Dont think it wasnt as good as the white camp. One man said his business of being a leatherworker started from his experrience in le
  4. If you dont believe Boy and girl Scouts are different just look at this LINK to the Boy scouts camping "store". Now look at the LINK to the Girl scouts "camping" store. The boys offer tons more for camping, backpacking, and fishing. However, for the girl scouts its getting better. 5 years ago all you would have seen on the girl scout side was clothes. And amazing! For the first time since 1970 their is an official girl scout knife!
  5. When I go to scout camp and other activities they are predominantly white kids. Yet I have seen some all black troops also. What gives? The only thing I can figure out is most scout troops are run by churches and those tend to be racially segregated.
  6. Well in ours we have a "Patrol Leader corner"where the patrol leaders talk about what went good or bad and what they learned. This way if we do the same campouts down the road the next patrol leaders can read the comments and learn from them. I'd also suggest publishing upcoming opportunities to earn merit badges outside your troop or council.
  7. Is there a minimum age that should be set for Senior patrol leader? Ours is only 13 and he's fairly short so theirs no way any of the boys his age or older are going to "lookup" so to speak to him. He has alot of trouble getting the boys to do things. The previous one was 15. What do you all think?
  8. I'm actually ok with gays in boy scouting and seeing one particular eagle scout and Micosay leader at Camp Bartle, I suspect many are. One thing though is they still should hold standards of morals. The above picture of the Boy Scouts carrying flags in the NYC pride parade - that would be a big fat NO! Pride parades are disgusting with examples of open sexuality and naked people flaunting morals. Many gay parents even avoid them. I also wouldnt want boy scouts at mardi gras or spring break events with people flashing their bodies and drunkenness either. If their is skin or alcohol involve
  9. Alot of girls do boy scout stuff "under the table" so to speak meaning they participate in their brothers troop but are not official. One girl won our pinewood derby. And thats a big one, the pinewood derby. Just why dont more girl scout troops do it?
  10. I'd like to ask about the decision made to send a scout home from summer camp for discipline reasons. 1. What reasons has your troop sent a Scout home? 2. Is there a procedure that must be followed? Ex. forms to be filled out, persons to be notified, number of Scout leaders to be involved in the decision? 3. Other than sending a Scout home, where are the other discipline methods you have used? 4. Are parents allowed to contest sending a scout home? 5. Does the Scout camp have to be informed? 6. Is there some standards so discipline is uniform meaning what gets a Scout a lecture and KP
  11. Actually you do see alot of girls doing Cub and Boy Scouts "under the table". Meaning they do all the activities (usually with brothers) but have no official status. I remember one girl actually won the Pinewood derby. Another big difference is when you look at BS popcorn sales vs GS cookie sales. In the BS program the boys can earn cool prizes like camping and fishing gear and after selling a certain amount, money goes into the boys account so they can apply it towards things like summer camp fees. With GS cookies the troop gets about 55 cents per box and that money goes into a pot all th
