    Webelos insignia on tan uniform

the Webelos Diamond patch has been discontinued and the diagram you are using is old, pre-2015. Here is a link to the current info https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/33066/33066_Cub_Scout_Insignia_WEB.pdf Basically she doesn't wear any rank until she gets her Webelos oval.

    parent rank pins

Back in the day, we used green ribbon and a straight pin for the Mothers' Pins as they were called. I personally despise the new necklaces as they are designed for Cub Scouts and Scouts, BSA. I am sorry but it is two distinct programs. The two programs need their own ribbons/necklaces. On a uniform note, There is no prohibition on wearing the necklace with the uniform. Although I still think the leather rounder temp patch with the mentor and parents pin is better.
  3. I wish I had your optimism. Unfortunately I have seen pros take over and ignore the boots on the ground. Not only at the local level, but national as well. One example is the "instapalms" that 94% were either against (18%) or strongly against (76%). And to this day, they still have not released the results of the last membership poll they took. I have seen a few pros that have a passion for the movement. Sadly they tend to leave quickly and the ones that remain and move up tend to view it as a job. And they willdo anything to keep their positions.

Join Scouts, get a free uniform via Goodwill and Council

Glad they did not do this when I was in HS. I would not have been able to sell an th uniforms. Seriously though, EXCELLENT!
  5. Cubs, no problem with family camping. Sea Scouts, Venturing, and Scouts BSA, I sure hope not.

@qwazse, I'd go for International Scouter personally.

    Messenger of Peace

Actually the International Youth Exchange Patch took the World Crest's place from circa 1990 to 2012 (I got mine 1995 retroactively since the patch wasn't out in 1989). Currently it is the International Spirit Award. http://www.boyscouttrail.com/content/award/international_spirit-2378.asp

Some countries do not have the resources we have in the USA. Any patch is a big deal. I remember trading with Croatian Scouter a plain and simple Scouts Croatia strip for one of my fully embroidered CSPs. She was embarrassed by her trade, but I told her it will be a good reminder of my time working with her. In all honesty I have seen no one wearing them locally in my district. I've seen a few at council activities. Most people wear the anniversary rings as once they get put on, they tend to remain as they are a pain to sew. Regarding an award that is suppose to remind us that we bigger than just our country, I thought that was the purpose of the World Crest. I remember earning the World Crest back in the day, and remember the exact day that everyone could wear it due to a policy change with the BSA: August 1, 1989. I was on a bus in Canada about to earn a second WC when they made the contingent leader made the announcement about the policy change..

Pretty much. Some long time volunteers burnt out. Some left as BSA implemented policies they disagreed with. And some got tired of not being listened to by the pros.

    possible fee increase coming

Actually the primary event was district camporee. IOLS was done in conjunction. At the time, as well as today, we don't have fully functional district committee. No program or training chairs, and no district chair. Just the RT commissioner trying to put on camporee, and the council training chair doing IOLS. She was filling in since we did not have a district training chair either. We also don't have a full time DE, but instead are sharing one with another district. We were given the option of allowing the 3rd activity or stepping down. And we were given this option 2 days before the event. I stayed to finish the camporee for the scouts,an announced a new camporee chief would be needed the next year. The event was pushed onto the DE by either the SE or DFS.

Sadly it is not only different from council to council, but also Scout Exec to Scout Exec. While the volunteers are suppose to be in charge, I have seen the nomination process rigged first hand at the council level, and was encouraged to do the same at the district level when I was a DE. Last district event I ran, the DE overruled myself and the volunteer in charge of the IOLS training that weekend. We had been working on the events for over a year, and at the last minute the DE added a 3rd event the same weekend at the same time. We had to scramble to get additional supplies and I had to redo several locations, and the orientation course to get to the events as a result. And I have seen a volunteer get their membership revoked because they discovered something a SE did that was not kosher. So yes the Pros do call the shots.

Thanks for the reference. Knowing my council however.... I've seen how SE's will manipulate the executive board membership so that only "Yes Men" get to serve. You try to be "Loyal opposition" and try to work on alternative and you are gone.I have seen several dedicated longtime Scouters go through this. It also happens at lower levels.

Don't let your SE find out. He may get ticked off at you.

    possible fee increase coming

I don't know. I am pushing oldest to finish his last 2 MBs and have his Eagle BOR before the end of the year. But even if it happens, I have a feeling my council will lose the paperwork and I will have to pay another year for him. I will give middle son 2 year to finish up. He is Star. As for youngest, i think i will be looking at TRAILS LIFE. SAd thing is i have been involved in Scouting almost 40 years. I have served in numerous volunteer and professional roles over the years. I know what Scouting can do. I just won't be able to afford it if it more than doubles. Heck even pushing it to$50 will be hard And in my area, I won't be the only one. Median household income for my council is under $41000.
  16. From what I have read, and been told, the answer is no. CSE Surbaugh mentioned how he had no children, do he could focus on his career. Many workers bees at National have little to no experience in Scouting, either as a youth or Scouter working with an unit. And those that have the experience tend to be ignored. I am told the head trainer has the job because of her PhD in leadership management, and has never been involved previously.

    Mealtime Question

Different troops do different things. Troop I grew up in, the SPL ate with the Leadership Corps. Those were the older Scouts who had previously served as PLs and had troop level jobs, i.e. quartermaster, scribe, instructor, etc. ASPL was the PL of that patrol. Neither had assigned duties. ASPL would help out as needed, just like a PL. Another troop I was in had the SPL and ASPL eat with the patrols as guests. Another troop had them eating, and doing KP, with their patrols. I personally did not like that because it took them away from their primary jobs. Current troop has the SPL only eating with adults.

As a former pro, @ParkMan 110% correct: DEs have little to no influence at the council level, let alone the National one. In fact, I find out thinks before the DEs do from this site, FB, and friends elsewhere. Clarification, got a copy of a letter one council sent saying that while no one knows how much the fee increase will be, be prepared for $100.

Try paying for 4, 5 if they charge MBCs. I see Trails Life getting a huge membership jump.

    parent rank pins

One thing I saw someone wearing was a leather rounder with Eagle mentor pins on it. He wore it as a temporary patch. If I was to wear unofficial pins, I would go this route.

    possible fee increase coming

I am like @Eagle1993, I am hearing rumors from the west, and I do not want to believe what I heard. Between lack of sleep and sticker shock, I may have posted too fast. Price I am hearing is $75+ per member. That does not include any insurance or council fees. If this happens, I see a significant drop in membership in my area. I am in a rural county with a median income of $42K. I will probably quit, or register solely as a MB counselor.

    Old Guys on Forum?

Been around since August 2008 as Eagle92. Some point in 2014, the website went wonky and I could not get back in and recreated the current account. This has been a great site, especially when the troop I was in was having issues. It is a great place to vent and get idea on how to improve the troop.

    possible fee increase coming

If the price range I heard is correct, it is way north of a $20 increase.. I will no longer be in Scouting as I will not be able to afford the registration fee. I will now be pushing my oldest son to achieve Eagle prior to December 31st, so that if the new price is true, I will not have to pay the fee for him to earn Eagle. Although he planned to continue Scouting after Eagle, he will not be able to if the price I heard is true. Don't know what I will do with middle son. He is Star and wants Eagle bad. May have to give him 1 year to get Life and Eagle. But he won't be able to go to camping except summer camp. And at summer camp, I may ask him to focus on Eagle required MBs. The price is that steep. As for my youngest, I will need to find a cheaper alternative. Trails Life may be in our future. at $46/year/ person, they will be significantly cheaper if the price range I was told is correct.

Don't know. But a retired Pro told me that national let go 38 people from the national office last month. Regarding the increase in registration and last minute notice, from the phone conversation I had earlier today, a lot of council pros are ticked off and are bugging the heck out of national about it. The tone I got is that it has ticked a lot of folks council execs off because they have already started their recruiting, and now are informed of a registration increase, when folks already paid for 2020 with their roundup fee.
