  1. I was looking at the requriments for Webelos Den Leader Award. I was wondering is this just for the Den Leader, or can the Assistant Den Leader earn this as well? The same would go for Den Leader Award, Tigers, Cub Scouter Award.

  2. I have seen different topics as for as awards that adults can and cannot wear on the uniform. Can a adult wear the mile swim award on there swimming suit that they earned in there youth??

  3. I started off wearing the Boy Scout Green and ret hat, becouse I did not have to buy 2 hats for each rank for my son and I. Last week I bought a blue and yellow had off E-bay for $1.00 + shipping. At Cub Camp yesterday, I had one leader ask me why I was wearing a Wolf hat if I was a Webeloe leader. I informed him that this was the older style leader hat. I may splerge one of these days and by the expedition hat, but till then I'll wear what I have.

  4. I just bought a yucca 573 backpack off E-bay. I have noticed others for sale that have other nubers on them. I assume that is for different model numbers that are for sizes. Does anyone know what the numbers mean, and how they are different. I notice there is not a particulare forum that talks about gear, and I thought this is the best area to talk about it.

  5. My son and I are going to be starting Webeles I this June. Since he started Tigers we have usually had snacks for our meetings. A few days ago I told him that we would be able to visit some of the Boy Scout Meetings. His first question to me is "What kind of snacks do they have."

Yes, I have created a little eating monster. Yes, I was like that also, as my wastline proves. My point is, whether snacks are a good habit to start, or bad. Please share your thoughts.

  6. As a soon to be Webeloes I Leader, I have started to make some contacts with a local Boy Scout Troop. The other night they had uniform inspections. The Adult Leaders inspected the 3 patrols of the troop. I was thinking later, that it would be interesting to let the boys inspect the leaders also. This is a troop that had about 5 Leaders at the meetings. One of them had a tan shirt on, but with only the U.S. flag patch on. My thinking was, that the adult leaders should be setting the correct example. What are your thoughts???

  7. I am winding down as my 2nd year as a den leader. I am moving on to Webeloes. My biggest challange is getting parents involved with the Pack. How to recruit parents to work as Leaders, Committee Members, or just stick around once and a while for the meetings. Most of them just want to drop the kids off, and find out what time to pick them up.

  8. Some of what you said as far as community exposer is something I would like to see more of. Newspaper coverage of what the scouts have been doing.

Since I have been with my current Cub Pack, we have had little exposer to the local Boy Scout Troop. This is something I want to correct. If they know where the path is going to lead, they are more likly to stick around. Thank you for your reply

  9. Thank you all. We are a small Pack, currently 5 Tigers, 0 wolfs, 2 Bears, 5 Webeloes I and no Webeloes II. Our Leadership is 1 CC, 0 Pack Committee, 1 Tiger Leader, 1 Bear Leader( Myself) The Cubmaster fills the roll for Ass. Den Leader, 1 Webeloes I leader. We do have someone set up for next year to take over as Tiger Leader when everyone moves up a level. This Pack has came close to folding a few times in the last 2 years becouse of lack of Adult participation. My thoughts are that it would work better with a experianced leader to help the program grow.

  10. As a Bear Den Leader, soon to be a Webelo Leader, I have noticed that most of the Leaders go on with there sons, and leaves the Pack always having to rebuild each year. As much as I enjoyed Boyscout, I feel that my skills would be better used if I would recycle back to Tigers and do it one more time once my son moves on. First of all, I would have a chance to recruit future adults, along with boys. I also think that it would be easier the second time around. Has anyone done this without having to do it becouse they had another son going through the program???? Is my thinking on the right track?

  11. I was a boyscout in Blackhawk Area Council, NW Illinois, SW Wisconsin. I attended Summer Camp at Canyon Camp. We would have a evening program called the Vesper Trail. At the evening meal, we were told to pick up 12 small stones and put it in our pocket, and meet at the camp fire ring just before dark. We would then be led off on a trail and stop along the way. When we stopped we would turn off our flashlights and a voice would say the word TRUSTWORTHY!! and till us what that part of the Scout Law ment. At the end, the voice would ask us Scouts, have you been Trustworthy? If we felt that we had fullfilled that part of the Scout Law while at camp, we would quitly drop one stone on the trail. This would go on till we reached the Chapel, where we heard a speaker talk about the last part of the Scout Law, Reverant. We were then told that we should keep the rest of our stones in our pocket, and some time during the rest of the week, try to fulfill the rest of the oath, and come back to the Chapel and deposit any stones that we had left. I think this was on Monday, or Tuesday Night, and it was a good way to reflect on why we are in Scouting.

My question is was this something special for this Camp, or is this used elswhere??

  12. I have been doing a lot of thinking lately about how to expand scouting. I have heard of sighn ups for Cubscouts, that is done by the district, but I have never heard of anything done for Boyscouts.

I can think of several methods.

Hand out flyers at the schools,

Set up a booth at the library, park, ect.

I think the best would be a direct sales pitch at the schools. Target 5th graders for Boyscouts. Tell them what Scouting can offer them. Coordinate with the local troops to prepare a special open house, where these new boys could come to a meeting and find out whats going on. Has anyone ever been involved with recruiting, and what are your thoughts on the best method??

  13. When I was a boyscout I was inducted in Walapeju Lodge 140. That lodge had bolo tie syle totem that members wore. It was a leather thong, with a silver arrow head. At the ends there were a single white pipe bead, and a red pony bead for Ordeal members, 2 of each for Brotherhood, and they were strung together to form a triangle for Vigil. I was wondering if any other lodge has any special type of totem?

  14. I went to Philmont in the summer of "78", and one of the things I remember is the nightly struggle to hang the bear bag. We were taught to tie our rope around a rack, and throw each end through a tree, and hang the bag of food ect. in between. The problem is a rock is not the easiest thing to tie a rope to. I think I found a easier way of doing this in the Bear (Cubscout ) handbook. Put the rock in a sock, and tie the rope to the sock, and swing and throw it. Has anyone ever tried this method and see if it works as well as I think should????

  15. Something to add. I stayed up till 12:30 to make sure I won this bidding for 4 scout shirts, 3 scout shorts, 1 pair of socks, 1 merit badge sash, 1 cub T-shirt, 1 scout hat, 1 red brag vest whith patches, 1 Philmont Arrowhead patch. Total cost $51.00 plus $7.20 for shipping. My son is a Bear, and I know own a total of 4 M youth shirts, to go with the 1 L youth shirt, and 2 S Adult shirts I already own. My thoughts are since I found this a such a great price, I will get hold of the local Scout Troop, and find out if there are any older boys that have outgrown a shirt the will fit my son now. I figure we can work out a trade. This will help the Boyscout that has out grown the shirt he has now. Plus my son will have enough shirts to last him for a long time to come.

Just to point out that if you can find a good buy on a shirt, pants ect. that is larger than you currently need for a boy, it may be worthwile to buy, and either wait till they grow, or use it to do a trade.

  16. I just finished WOLF/BALLOO training this weekend. I hade a really great set of instructers, and had a great time. They handed out information on Wood Badge. My question is as follows.

"Wood Badge training consist of two parts; the first part being the course itself. The second part consists of the application of a series of written goals(your "Ticket") wich are completed within eighteen months."

Can anyone give me a example of the type of goals one might set.

  17. I have seen several posts dealing with the cost of a (Full) uniform. I have recently started buying uniforms off E-bay. I have to admit I was very wary at first. Things like giving out credit card information, and what if you never receive the product, among others. Using the AUCTION link at the top of this web-site, it takes you right to E-bay. There are a lot of sellers that are thrift stores that do a lot of buissness on E-bay. If you click a item, it tells how many things the buyer has sold, feedback from there customers, and whether they will take checks, or money orders. My point is if you are looking for average size uniforms you can pick up youth M and L for about $20 counting shipping. Do you have a parent that wants to do the shopping for the troop,or Pack. Give on person your order, and how much you will pay. If you watch really close you can find some real deals. My last purchase was a Youth L shirt for $11.50 including shipping. Now the Adult XXL you are going to pay much more, but this is a way to save a lot of money. I am also staring a collection of old uniforms. I picked up a pair of boys scout pants my guess late 40's to 50's for a dollar, and the seller paid the shipping. All you have to do is keep track of it and you will probably find some great deals to. Good Luck

  18. I have read about some of the ways to work this out. Assuming the the child uses some type of pullups, you can make arrangments with the leader. Have them place the pullups in there sleeping bag, allong with a plactic bag. They change into them while in the sleeping bag. In the morning, slip out of them, and put them into the sleeping bag. Have the leader dispose of them later in the day when they are out of the campsite.

  19. Thank you everyone. You have all given me much to work with. I guess I did not get all of my information out at the beginning. I am in NW Illinois, and since the Girl Scout Leader and Assisant are not the outdoorsy type, they have asked me to become the sole instructer. This is at a Scout Cabin, 3 miles from our home town. This building was donated to the GSA and BSA for scouting purposes. Very much like the one from the movie "Follow Me Boys". It is about 125 yards from the water, so there is a danger from that area. There is poisin ivy, and probably a good risk from mosquitoes, and ticks. I think that the timber rattle snake is the only poisines snack that would live in this part of the state, but from what I usderstand, it is very rare, most likely to be found much further north near the Wisconsin border, and then you would have to activly seek it out.

This will take part only during the day time, but I do not know what exposer these girls have had, so I want to do the basics. We will be working on 3 badges, Outdoor Fun, Nature, and one called Finding your way. To put in in BSA language, we will learn about studying and observing nature. Thank you Scoutldr. I will use your advice. We will learn the first stage of maps and compass, and that we can have fun in the outdoors. I just wanted to explain that we would have lots of fun, but as in any envirment, there are dangers, so we must respect them and take appropiate care. Once again thank all of you for your thoughts
