  1. Sorry, Beavah, but they are making LOTS more than 2% "return on assets". A number in the county auditor's computer is not an asset, in that it cannot generate an income. So your calculation is STILL irrelevant in the real world.
  2. "someone can be a 'C' student and still become President." Well, of course! (And a "C" proves that he DID "get an education" and was academically average - with just as many below him as above). There are many more attributes that affect the qualifications and ability to do a job (any job, from sweeper to President) than simply academic proficiency. (As an aside: I have long maintained that the qualities reguired to win a campaign for President bear no relationship to the qualities required to successfully do the job of President. That's one of our problems and I believe the r
  3. "We continue to have the small Vigil Honor triangle pin. You may wear this pinned to the middle of the universal arrow ribbon worn off the right pocket. When one does not wear the sash, this is the only way to identify one as a VH member. It can also be used for civilian wear, but I've really never seen this." I've worn mine as a lapel pin on a number of occasions. Gets some interesting conversations started when I'm among non-BSA people.
  4. "or it could be the spirit of freedom and equality for all citizens" Nope. Has nothing to do with freedom (unless you mean freedom of action) or equality for all citizens. This is not about who you are (as in race relations) but everything about what you do. It's 100% about accepting or not accepting certain behavior.
  5. Bevah, the examples I gave were NOT "unproductive assets". In both cases the people were earning a comfortable (to them - which is all that matters) living from an asset that they paid what is to them a reasonable price and has been amortized over a number of years. Maybe even inherited (in the case of one small garage I know). Just because something happened next door that caused a local government to change its numbers, the business does not suddenly become "unproductive". The percentage ratio you gave is irrelevant. Raising the bottom limit to $10 million might help some of these,
  6. "Thing is, yeh can generally rely on scouters being good folk no matter what their background or political stripes. One of the great things about Scoutin'. Beavah" You are exactly correct, Sir!
  7. What about the budgets passed by Congress and then signed by the president? He/she can't change a thing (no line-item veto - another place the Confederates had a superior Constitution). "The President proposes, Congress disposes" was the ditty they taught us in Civics (wish they still had those courses in HS).
  8. "If they're only earning 2.5% income and are headed to bankruptcy on assets of $2 million they need to talk to Barry's wife." It's not 2.5% income, it's a comfortable living in a building that they paid for years ago. The book value is irrelevant to their business (except fot the property tax, which is a CODB). Yes, they need to talk to anyone who can help stop the reimposition of the death tax. They aren't headed for bankruptcy UNLESS the Feds decide to send them that way.
  9. "I suppose it's as hilarious as saying the NRA is about following the constitution too." Nothing hilarious about that. Unless you consider the Bill of Rights hilarious. (And why are you putting down the nation's oldest civil rights organization?)
  10. "Facts have a liberal bias!" WRONG!! Facts, by definition, have NO bias. Otherwise they are not facts. (And that's a tired old lie, by the way.) And thanks for the charts proving my points. Your chart showed the proposed budget (which is fiction) vs the actual budgets passed by the Congress, which is real life. And only the ones passed by Congress generated any debt.
  11. "How many people really get hammered hard by the estate tax, anyway?" LOTS of people. Many small businesses have been forced into bankruptcy by such, as it is based on assets, not income. The father/son garage half a block from a new mall, with $50k income but the land is worth $2 mil. The family farm with small income but a new sub-division on 3 sides can't be inherited because the heirs don't have the income to pay that tax. I don't know the latest figures, but not long ago I remember that somewhere near 20% of America's millionaires had annual incomes of less than $50,000.
  12. My B-school professors all stated that only mining and manufacturing generate wealth. All other activities just move it around. (Actually, most of them said "mining, manufacturing and agriculture". But I submit that agriculture IS manufacturing by the classic definition.)
  13. "The tea party has to do with following the constitution Yah, so does the ACLU, eh? " Now, THAT..... is hilarious!!
  14. "Hold off on that second yacht? Heh... " Hey... many of those are made right here in South Carolina! Along with your Michelin tires... and ALL BMW X-series vehicles. (X3, X5, X6) We can use the jobs!!! (And don't forget the GE wind generators and gas turbine engines.....)
  15. "Woapalanne, Do you disagree with Alan Simpson's assessment?" I agree with most of it. (I will have to study it in detail before venturing beyond that statement.) However, there have been four major income tax cuts in the half-century that I have been a working adult. In EVERY case, the result was an increase in Federal revenues. Every case. It stands to reason that a major tax increase at this time (which would - beyond question - slow the economic recovery) would have the opposite effect. Do we really need to slow the economic recovery and reduce Federal revenues at the sa
  16. But Rabbinical Law and Canon Law are ALREADY illegal to be used in court. International law as defined in treaties actually is applicable in courts in the U.S. In fact, treaties trump the Constitution.
  17. Let the taxes expire??? So, really, just why do y'all think that a reduction in Federal revenues would be a good thing right now?
  18. "We are still paying for Reganomics!" Please explain how "we are still paying" for large increases in Federal revenue 20+ years ago.
  19. Good points. We only show our ignorance when we blame a President (ANY President) for debt. Spending and tax bills MUST originate in the House of Representatives. Neither the Senate nor the President can make us tax or spend. It takes the House, then the others agreeing. So if you want to blame party, see what party is in control of the House. The President can only sign or veto, and his/her veto can be overridden.
  20. "An atheist can't pray, he's got no one to talk to." Oh, yes he does. He just chooses to pretend there's no one there.
  21. "I have no doubt Oklahoma's approach will be struck down in every federal court it touches." Why? It EXACTLY matches a provision of the U.S. Constitution. It's redundant.... not unconstitutional. (Oh, that's right - the Administration also objects to the Arizona law matching Federal law.)
  22. Scoutbox said: "It is about the boys, and showing them in some way that you not only have done the work yourself, but understand what they are going through helps that little bit more. Connecting with then can sometimes be the hardest part. " You are exactly right, Sir. I consider it part of "Set the example."(This message has been edited by Woapalanne)
  23. F Scouter said "At the same time, get rid of the AOL patch, since weve been clued in now that it is against the rules to wear anything on the uniform that doesnt represent ones current status. That would also include the Eagle knot, and the AOL knot, and the youth-earned Religious Emblem knot." Nope. My current status is that I DID earn the AOL as a kid, therefore that knot will stay. Same with the rest. I didn't earn the Scouter's Key in my current position, but it's not coming off. Same with the Den Leader Coach Award. It is correct to wear them, or you can omit them if you wish. N
  24. Woapalanne

    Knot sizes

Y'all need to complain to National about that. They can't fix it if we don't let them know there's a problem.
  25. That's another one, Gern. I rank them both pretty high on the list.
