  1. 6:00 am Rise and shine, campers! It's co-o-old out there!
  2. Many Christians don't like to be reminded that they ritually eat their God, but in fact god-eating has deep roots in human prehistory. Not technically cannibalism, it's actually referred to as theophagy.
  3. Yes, great idea! That way we just wouldn't have to interact at all with people who are different from ourselves. Pesky diversity.
  4. nah, you're just enthusiastic! And in Scouting, that's s good thing. Don't worry about making the others comfortable. I've been on a WB few courses now and have oserved that each TG has their own style. Somehow it always fits together into a great course. Just keep remembering, it's all for the participants.
  5. Good point. I'll ask my gay friends how they deal with being hated.
  6. P&T are just showmen, trying to get a reaction. I really don't think there a lot of people who "hate" Scouting. Maybe some, but not many. Our problem is that a lot of people do see us as overly conservative when it comes to issues of social justice. And let's face it, we are sort of behind the curve on that one. Turtle's right, though. When confronted by ire, just turn the cheek and be an example of what is good in Scouting.
  7. Reading about this issue, I found the following blog: The New Hampshire legislature will consider a bill that would allow Christian businesses to refuse service to gay couples. Rep. Frank Sapareto says anybody that opposes his bill is "intolerant." The bill would put an exemption in state marriage law. The proposed text says no person, including a business owner or employee, should be required to provide services, accommodations, advantages, facilities, goods or privileges for wedding services in "violation of the person's conscience or religious faith." Our definition of marriage is
  8. "Es preparado?" ... I think they say "siempre listo" anyway." Makes me think of ol' Semper Paratus. I miss that guy.
  9. For those of you who are interested in the ongoing relationship between the BSA and us ever-troublesome Unitarians, BSA has now published a brochure in its outreach series for Unitarian Universalist potential chartering partners. It is listed on the BSA site (faiths are listed alphabetically - see bottom of page) at www.scouting.org/scoutsource/Membership/Charter_Partners/Religious.aspx which also provides a link to the UUSO website. The bochure may be viewed at http://www.scouting.org/filestore/membership/pdf/522-031_WB.pdf -trevorum
  10. My son is also type 1 and I completely understand your need to help him monitor. I urge you to let him have this adventure, even without you. You need to trust him, his adult leaders, and the on-site medical staff. Next summer, he will be a year and a half older than he is now and that's a long time for a young person to mature. Help him learn to accept responsibility for his health. My son went to Philmont (no refrigeration for meds in the high country!) and he is terrifically glad he accepted that adventure.
  11. Among the young fellows I know, for adventure these days, the "Pioneer West" takes a back seat to the "Final Frontier" (insert sweeping musical theme).
  12. I take it he was not a field scientist ...
  13. My advice: give him your advice, but let HIM plan the hikes. The first one may be a disaster, but that's OK. Make sure he has a map, water, good boots, and a cell phone.
  14. A lot of us respect Merlyn for his vision, his ethical compass and his persistence, even if his delivery is brusque and impatient. Sort of like Kudu
  15. Commission to anyone who can find a Capitol Area 1997 black & gold JSP.
  16. Beav is attempting to dabble in Anthropology and cultural relativism, which is good. He even gets some of it right.
  17. packsaddle, we must smell similarly. I, too, am apparently unappetizing to six-legged critters. I am rarely bothered by mosquitoes, have no problem with chiggers and have never once in my life been bitten by a tick. This despite being in a profession which regularly takes me into critter habitat (not to mention camping with the troop). OTOH, I am open season for any bio-attack from the Plant Kingdom - poison ivy is my bane and pollens knock me flat.
  18. I really wish I could sit down and share a beer with you guys sometime.
  19. Seriously, if we could all treat each other with equal dignity and worth, that's good enough for me. It really doesn't matter if we think Bob is abnormal or is going to hell for his beliefs and/or actions, as long as we treat Bob the same way we want to be treated ourselves.
  20. Barry, sorry I've been misunderstood. "All or nothing"? Me?? LOL, I'm told I always see too many shades of grey!
  21. I take it a "pro-homosexual" is someone who believes that all persons deserve to be treated with equal dignity and worth.
  22. On behalf of Texas, I want to apologize to the rest of the country for Governor Perry. Please believe me when I say we're not all idiots.
