  1. In the 1976 cult classic, "The Passover Plot," Jesus was played by the Jewish actor Zalman King. I remember thinking it was great casting because he actually looked semitic, unlike Jeffrey Hunter.
  2. pack, thank you- a generous offer. I FB'd you.
  3. Jamist649, it may help if you recognize that Allah, Jehovah, and Yahweh are just different names for the same God. The three Abrahamic faiths of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are each derived from the same Old Testament source and worship the same deity.
  4. pack, that sounds archeological. Can you shoot me a ref?
  5. I'm still waiting on conclusive proof of the so-called theory of gravity. If one theory is in doubt, can the others be far behind?
  6. NJ, I have never understood the biblical chronologies. Of course, when I get a radiocarbon date back from the lab that comes in at 10,000 years old, I have to have faith that the lab isn't pulling a fast one on me.
  7. I was at a Blue and Gold on Saturday evening. No rapture, but lots and lots of chaos. My understanding of Camping's "math" is that he took the creation date of 4990 BC (??), added 7000 years for the sake of mysticism and then subtracted one year because there was no year zero. Not sure where May 21 came from, so we still have the rest of the year to be concerned about ...
  8. Packsaddle wonders if the resurrection isn't merely a "special case of reincarnation?" I don't think so. In every other example of reincarnation that I know of, the "spirit" returns to reside in a wholly different corpus. In this case, the spirit returned to (or never left) the original corpus. See safety coffins: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safety_coffin
  9. An interesting corollary: Is everyone who believes in the resurrection necessarily a Christian? Surprisingly, there is disagreement.
  10. "I'm curious, what would a "more masculine rainbow" look like?" I'm seeing something more in earth tones, maybe camo ...
  11. neil-b says, "If you believe in God, which presumably all the Scouters here do.." umm... no. Some Scouters here are Buddhists, or UUs, or other faiths which do not necessarily invoke your God. Please see the ongoing thread at http://www.scouter.com/forums/viewThread.asp?threadID=315067
  12. Actually, the council shoulder patch is mostly two guys in a canoe. There is a streak across the sky, but it's not an obvious icon.
  13. [rolls eyes at packsaddle]
  14. I've heard it sensibly argued that "Thrifty" is an outdated value - our responsibility in the modern economy is to consume as much stuff as possible so that other people can keep their jobs making that stuff.
  15. Fish, Off point perhaps, but note that Allah is the SAME deity as the Judeo Yahweh and the Christian Jehovah. Different names for the same God. (This message has been edited by trevorum)
  16. Ed asks, "Can you be reverent if you don't believe [in God]?" Clearly, yes.
  17. Pack, she collects skulls? Really? Does she trade?
  18. It's only a matter of time before we finally grant equal rights for all citizens.
  19. Having volunteered to serve on staff for an upcoming Trainer's EDGE training seminar, I've been asked to come up with some ideas for chachkas for the participants - mugs, pens, carabiners and the like that could be branded with the course logo or title and serve as a useful reminder of the course. I know there are some pros and cons to this idea in the first place, but assuming that the course director wants this to happen, does anyone have any good ideas? Cheap, easy to pesonalize, useful, scouting related if possible. And sources?? Thanks!
  20. Send me a PM with your email address. I'll send you a scan of the Illowa page from the guide. It is not illustrated but has complete descriptions of each issue.
  21. My 2008 CSP guide lists 18 Illowa issues ranging from the S2a and S2b at $3-4 each up to the SA-14 and SA15 at $50-60 each. Total of all issues is $549-647. There probably have been more issues since 2008, and this list does not inlude JSPs. That's quite a gift! Even so, I'll bet it would take several years to see all issues appear on eBay. Have fun!
  22. yeah, well mebbe. But until such time as the Rev. Phelps stops carrying around signs that proclaim "GOD HATES FAGS," I'll continue to characterize him as 'homophobic'. I think that is a very succinct summary of his world view. And if you think that makes me 'impolite', well, frankly I don't much care.
  23. Seattle, That's a very interesting take. I gather your point is that any label can be rejected as being 'hate speech.' I suppose that may be true; the origin of our infamous 'n-word' is simply a neutral color word from Latin. (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigger) Not wanting to be discourteous , what descriptive modifier do you think would be useful as a replacement, in reference to a person who is viscerally repelled by homosexuality, does not want to have anything to do with homosexuals, is opposed to allowing equal civil rights for homosexuals, and/or believes that homosexuality
