  1. Speaking from the view of a former member of the Union Street Marble Club. (the intials should give it away) I spent a lot of time in what you call BDU's.

The Scout Pants really to seem to dry faster, I dont know why.

"BDUs" look horrible unless you "blouse" them(Marineese for tucking the bottoms in to an elastic band and having them ride at the top of a combat boot)Lets leave that to the military, some profession police and then all the wanna be psycos

The ties drag and boy would be walking on the backs of them. Plus they were designed to fit some very physically fit people they look comical on fat people(i should know , I am)

Many parents complain about the scout pants. there's a flame war going on now with 101 replies---thats controversy.

Maybe no one uniform will work for every situation.

The average Marine and the Average Scout are expected to do the same things: play in the mud, run around the woods, hike, perform color guards, looked squared away in the public eye. And do that all in a climate that that varies from 0 and dry and cold, to 30 and raining, to 90 degrees with 90 percent humidity---and that's just upstate NY.

Folks it just ain't gonna happen. The "Corps issues gore tex in Norway. BDU's in the tropics and dress blues to impress the kids and pretty young ladies.

And though they only get 3% of the Defense budget they have a little more money than we do.

As far as scout pants. tell parents to go to ebay. I have helped 10 boys get pants for about 20 bucks. that is less than a pair of jeans. What do shorts for travel soccor or little league cost yet no boy I've ever seen wears blue jeans to a soccer game.

  2. Thank you for the '43 and '67 references.

I do not need any instructions or kit availability.

The WWW has provided more than enough info.

We did this with 12 boys in a 5 hour den meeting once when the boys had an early release from school.

Next week one of the Dads came up to me and said, "You must be teaching those kids a lot. My boy and another Cub were discussinmg what a variable capacitor and a diode do".

    I was happy.

I wish I knew somebody that had a handbook from 1936 or so, I'd love a xerox copy of that activity.

    Anybody here tried it?

  4. Please don't take offense to the fossil thing. I am in fact 3 years older than you.I know it was in our bear book as kids. I am looking for a xerox copy of something from the 1940's.

Looking for history for a Pow wow class next March. This is probably this most forgotten elective in the book.

And thank you, yes I have seen them at the Scout store but you can gather the materials for yourself and save about 33% and get the cost down to $8 a cub.

thank you for your 31 years of service.

Now any historical book collectors or really old scouters out there?

  5. looking for the oldest cub book out there and the earliest reference to crystal radios in a cub scout or boy scout book.

Will it even be in the next edition?!?!?!?!?!?

I know this has nothing to do with wood badge but this is were the web site "fossils" hangout.

Can anybody give testimony to their battery free wireless wonder?

  6. Win all you can was confusing for me. We just teamed up and the competition was quite keen, our teamlosing badly because we were honest. We even started some payback deceitfulness. In the end we learned from it though.

Is "october Sky" part of everybod's course I thought that went well. Finding resources, forming & storming.

We collected many props as the Weather Patrol. a broken umbrella, a 3 1/2' diam. plywood sun that the next patrol had to carry around. great fun.

    Good communication exercises.

  7. Good question!

The all time favorite is The Den Leader says" which is just like Simon Sez. Sometimes the parents even play.

We play spoons which is a great card game. I usually hold that as "If we get all of or work done we can play spoons"

Another simpile game is all stand and say to the boys, "When you think one minute has passed sit down. I hold my watch and observe which boy was the closest. but don't tell until they have all sat down. A slow down kind of quiet game.

We play "in the pond out of the Pond" a rope or string makes the pond. When you say in the pond all the boys jump in. When you say out of the pond all boy jump out. Mix them up with sayings like"out of my mind" 'My hair is blond" or any other thing to throw them off. They like it.

Kim's game is fun and probably the oldest scouting game. We used to play it in the Marines. Place about 20 common objects on a table covered with a sheet. Exposed the objects for one full minute. The boys go back and sit down and write how many objects they remember. Spelling does not count for cubs. Mind strengthening game.

We play Charge! all the boys stick their neckerchief in their pocket with a whole bunch hanging out(like a flg for flag football) IT stands in the center an yells charge! the herd then tries to run the length of the field withou going out of bounds and without their flag being captured. Captures go in the middle and help IT.

Is that a good start? All these games I play with the boys and they seem to like them all.

  8. This year we are going to try to recruit in June.

the first activity will be a Pack Picnic. Picnic is already planned. We have two Dads set up to be leaders.

We will do a minimum of three activities this summer.

Family Picnic(food, lacrosse, hike around rock formations)

    Minor league baseball game

Another Family picnic at a gun club that owns a panfish pond

Visit the Uss Slater(WW2 ship that takes about an hour to tour.)

Keep it simple make it fun.

Make a few summer events but concertrate on high quality.

One recruiting speech I copied from The DE included going into school to address the kids with a backpack full of stuff from the Sports and academics award subjects. I asked them to raise their hands if they liked to fish...then held up a fishing rod. At the end of the talk the pack was empty and the kids were tired of raising their hands. The parents thought it was great and the kids did too. Good luck. Make the kids smile.

  9. Your Council office should have this item. Our council office has many of them. It is an envelope chocked full of diferent ways to earn patches; individual, pack, adult etc.

In my opinion it is a bit overblown. Though I like the pocket flap for outdoor stuff.

If you are at you wits end call Twin Rivers council in Albany NY they will probably send one.518 869 6436

  10. I have been a wolf, bear and am currently a Webelos Den Ldr.

Ask wise old Mr. Cubmaster to politely show you chapter and verse where it says the young lad cannot wear his badge. This is a merit based organization. Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden Powell did not want scouts to see class distinction. We are not talking about wealth----we are speaking of work. BP would have promoted the lad.

I've never read anything about pushing mediocre preformance to the masses. The feel good decade is over.

A boy that stretches should be rewarded. If any boy is greased lightning just make sure he actually learning the skills and not just getting his ticket punched.

I have 4 of 10 Webelos awarded the webelos badge suddenly my slower boys are interested in memorizing the law and promise etc.

One boy actually groaned out loud when his name was not called. It should have not been a surprise. He thinks the scout oath starts out "I Rumplestilskin promise...

Competition is natural. The secular crowd believes in evolution until competition comes into play. All the cavemen who did not compete died with their genes still in them.

Why backslide? This is assuming all boys in the discussion are able to accomplish the activities.

An amazing thing happens when Johnny puts down his gameboy and looks in that great book full of guided activities between his folks, the den ldr, his peers and the rest of "the village"

Press on. Full speed ahead and steady as she goes.Your course needs no direction change. Your Cubmaster needs to talk to someone aboutwhat the correct thing to do is. Start with the District Exec.

  11. Good for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am quickly running out of time with 1 goal left.

Woodbadge is a great time. It is kind of like church in that you begin your service to others after the meeting.

For ticket items just think about attainable solutions to problems or areas of need in you current scouting position.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

  12. I think your idea is great. Heck kids play out in the snow all day long. I live near Albany NY. We are family camping in Feb. We will stay in a Scout camp heated cabin and snowshoe and sleigh ride. We'll work some cold weather survival discussions in and a short campfire.

Make sure evey kid has a small stainless steel thermos(10bucks at dic's sporting goods) and warm clothes and have a blast.Work in and Ice rescue.Have the Den cheif lay on a foam pad or sled and explain how to rescue him(new bear book pg 101, oldbook 87) Ice skating safety pg 241 Wolfpg 130 "snow ball bean bag toss. go on a birds nest hike--see how many nests you find with no leaves on the trees---the birds are done using them. Let your imagination work. Keep it safe keep it simple have a blast.

  13. My wife is a speech person at a public school and deals with autistic kids all the time. Many times these kids are BRILLIANT in the brain department.

For the adult it can be hard to understand what is going on. I don't know if it is legal but how about asking for a meeting with some of "Tommy's" spec ed teachers and the mother. This would allow you to talk to the "experts"(they spend more waking hours with him than the mother)about him in particular. Most teachers would see that Scouting is good for him and be pleased that you are willing to bend his way. Publish confidential minutes of the meeting with the mom so you can remember what suggestions were made. I leave you with one thing.

My wife says that Autism is no excuse for BAD behavior, maybe different but not BAD. God Bless you.
