  1. Did you read it? The Times was editorializing in what was supposed to be a news report. Sanders said the conversations took place, just not in phone calls.

Do you honestly believe anyone in a BSA national leadership position told Trump that the speech was "the greatest speech that was ever made to them, and they were very thankful."?

The only place that comment existed was in his head.

  2. What's with the snarky replies? Someone enjoyed scouts in their own way and you guys tell him he's wrong because it isn't good enough? Cchoat said he had one of his best experiences. He didn't say he had one of the best experiences. If you don't think it would be your best experience then why not just be happy for him rather than tell him he's doing something wrong?

    Friendly, courteous, or kind?

I don't believe it is snarky at all.  The poster of the comment toward which my comment was directed has, by his account, been involved in scouting over 25 years and only recently as a trainer.   In light of that, I would expect that rewarding experiences with youth would far outnumber those in a training setting.  You may disagree with this observation, but I'm not sure why you impugn my motivations.

  3.  There has been enough other commentary about it so that the public has gotten the message that the president's remarks were inappropriate, and those who are receptive to that message can do what they will with it.

Correct, but absent today's statement, their silence could be viewed as a tacit endorsement.

And yes, it would have been nice to see the words narcissistic, egomaniacal, and unhinged in the statement, but that might be crossing some line.  :-)

  4. Common decency in our era demands that hats be removed at the table - that is one of the few absolute cases of hats coming off.

I understand that (although I don't necessarily agree with the absolute part).  My question was more along the lines of whether there is a good reason for this, or is it just a "we've always done it that way" justification.  Wearing a hat doesn't seem inherently offensive.

  5. Taking the discussion back a further step, why is it impolite to wear a hat indoors, particularly while eating?  Food service workers are required to cover their hair to avoid contamination, and a hat many times fits this requirement.  The reason I ask is because I have fairly thick hair, and even after a haircut, I get the most ridiculous looking "hat head" when I take my hat off, that can only be resolved by completely wetting down my hair (i.e. shower).   I think I would be much more visually non-offensive wearing a baseball cap rather than this disheveled coif.

  6. While I agree the letters should be destroyed per policy, what Scout is going to ask someone to give a reference if they even suspect that person will give an even slightly negative response?

I would tend to agree with that, but somewhere in the archives on this board is another discussion along these lines, and I recall people coming up with examples of negative references.   (I don't have time to search harder now.  Maybe a weekend task)

  7. That's what the crew thought about the staff at Ponil Creek. They were wrong. Hence my response.

So you extrapolate from that tragic, freak event that there are no circumstances, anywhere, where scouts can responsibly camp near a river?

There was a tragic accident in the Boundary Waters last year where 2 were killed when a storm brought down a tree. Should Northern Tier be closed?

  8. Really? Tell that to the crew from CA that lost one of their Scouts a few years back camping inside the Ponil Creek "flood plain". Might want to re-think before hitting that "post" button. Geesh.

Here in the upper Mississippi valley, a good percentage of public campgrounds are within the floodplain of the Mississippi and its tributaries.  The reason for that is simple - these are areas that are not suitable for building or other development, but they are beautiful areas. There wouldn't be much camping around here if it wasn't for floodplains.  Here is one of the best examples:

The rivers here rise predictably in response to rain events.   Might want to consider that well informed, conscientious folks familiar with local conditions are in the best position to judge this, rather than paint with too broad a brush.   I have no idea where the OP is located, but I suspect he has a pretty good idea whether his trip idea is safe.

  9. I don't have any firsthand knowledge of a qualified charter application being denied by a council.  Starting a new unit is a positive for a DE.  Even if the scouts come from another unit, the district would still be even on scout numbers and plus one for units.

  10. I don't think you're going to find an official answer, like keeping business records for 7 years or anything like like.  I suppose the question is are they relevant?  outdated? superseded?

On the other hand, there are some materials out there, like the earlier editions of the Scoutmaster Handbook and Patrol Leader Handbook that are really timeless, and in many ways better than the current versions.

You might find someone on ebay looking for the old magazines.
