  1. I don't necessarily agree with that. These folks are volunteers, like most of us, with families, jobs, and probably other scouting duties. I don't think making themselves available on a pre-determined schedule that is made known to all ahead of time is unreasonable. I don't think it's reasonable to expect the EBOR members make themselves available at the drop of a hat to accommodate someone who consciously waited until the last minute. I can see making an exception for something that is truly an emergency or unforeseen, but I don't see that here. I'm not saying I agree with the decision to no
  2. The GTA provides: [h=3]9.0.2.1 What an Eagle Scout Candidate Should Expect[/h] 5. If the candidate believes he has been mistreated or his proposal wrongfully rejected, he will be provided a method of redress. This will include the opportunity for a second opinion and approval, either through another volunteer or professional advancement administrator, or the Scout executive,as determined by the council advancement committee or executive board. And elsewhere: [h=2]9.0.4.0 Time Extensions[/h] If a youth foresees that, due to no fault or choice of his own, he will be unable
  3. We do mostly one-pot cooking on backpacking trips, although not necessarily using a traditional mess kit.
  4. Nice to see so many examples of the Scout Law in practice.
  5. I've asked this before and never received a solid response. If this interpretation is accurate, then shouldn't you also conclude that telephone conversations are prohibited without someone else listening in on the line? So I should turn myself in for a YPT violation for the brief discussion I had the other night with our SPL to decide whether or not to cancel the meeting because of a late afternoon snowstorm? Scouts shouldn't call merit badge counselors to arrange meetings without someone else present on the phone call? This is quite a stretch.
  6. "Troop XXX" - What are we talking about, porn with a scouting theme?
  7. Wow, this is a confusing thread. Why the distinction between youth based on whether or not they are Eagles? Its a red herring.
  8. Scouter99 identified the crux of the issue. Two deep leadership is required for the trip. That does not mean that everyone on the trip must be in the presence of those two adults every moment of the trip. There are any number of instances on a trip where scouts are outside the presence of adults - latrine, fetching water, fishing, etc. As long as they follow the buddy system and avoid one-on-one youth/adult situations, there is no problem.
  9. I don't recall how I found Scouter.com. Most likely a Google search for info on some scouting topic. As for the other part of the question that seems to have strayed from the stated topic - there are two important points: (1) an ECOH is typically not a troop function - it is conducted at the discretion of the scout and his family; and (2) there is no official script or proscription list of things that may not be uttered at the event.

  12. It appears that the answer to this question has changed under the new GTA http://www.scouter.com/forum/advancement-resources/385514-guide-to-advancement-2013
  13. "The deceased bear appears to match the description of that bear." They can't just leave us hanging. I'd like to see this description. What, six feet tall, black hair? Or was it a brown bear?
  14. One might also ask the converse, what would make a Venturer more qualified to participate in an activity than a Boy Scout of equal age, both having been provided with training?
  15. It is ironic that, under a literal interpretation of the rule cited by RichardB above, a troop (by definition all boys and therefore not coed) overnight outing could have 2 female leaders, but a crew outing with a mix of (likely older) males and females could not. Is there some rational basis for the difference?
  16. >>>>How does one reconcile the issue of Biblical tenets and scientific evidence in light of scientific testimony from a major scientific contributor?<<<< A surprising example how this can be done comes from the Catholic Church: http://www.vaticanobservatory.org/index.php/en/about-us/cat-history From persecutor of Galileo to sponsor and facilitator of cutting-edge scientific research - too bad it only took 350 years
  17. Slight change of direction, but I was wondering how common it was for lodges to reject adult nominations from units. In our lodge, as long as the nominated adults meet the basic requirements, they are accepted. I cant recall a qualified nomination being turned down. I was surprised to read the descriptions of lodges that reject significant numbers of adults. If it makes a difference, I am from a very small council/lodge.
  18. >>>>The BSA signs Memoranda of Mutual Support with organizations all the time. It would not be unusual to have one with AHG. The BSA has one with the Military Order of World Wars, with the US Sportsmans Alliance, with the National Association for Search and Rescue, with the American Cadet Alliance, with the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance.

  20. Not sure where this fits best, so thought I would put it in open discussion. Mods, feel free to move it as you see fit. I just discovered that Google Maps has a new (to me, at least) option which, when preparing directions, allows you to request directions best suited for bicycling. It avoids interstates and other busy 4 lane highways, and appears to prefer designated bicycle routes and trails. Just click on the bicycle icon above the destination fields. There are others, in addition to automobile, for walking and public transportation. Playing around with it for my area, it app
  21. The OP does not mention who within the troop thinks that this is a rule. "The Troop" is incapable of thinking on its own (and many may be able to identify people in leadership roles incapable of doing so as well). As has been noted elsewhere, there is nothing that prevents a chartering organization from imposing more strict requirements than those from BSA. So, if the CO is requiring a 1:5 ratio, then you are stuck with it unless they can be convinced otherwise.
  22. If a young scout has one merit badge and wants to wear it on a sash, why would anyone want to discourage that?
  23. >>>>lots of troops in my area that say "Contact the council for info" that's kind of a downer.
  24. First, a point of clarification, there is no "Star Service Project" requirement. The requirement is: "While a First Class Scout, take part in service project(s) totaling at least 6 hours of work. These projects must be approved by your Scoutmaster." So the Scout doesn't need to develop, plan, lead, or anything else that some people tend to use to turn this and the Life service requirement into mini Eagle projects. They can work on any service project, regardless of whether it is associated with the troop or scouting otherwise, as long as the Scoutmaster approves of it. As fo
  25. We use Mickman Bros. as well, and they are a top-notch outfit to work with. However, we are within driving distance of their location in MN, and someone with a truck and trailer picks them up for us in exchange for gas money. Not sure how much shipping costs impact the bottom line.
