Modern tents are almost knot free. Teaching scouts to make a shelter with tarp and ropes gives them a life skill.

Good points.  And so the leaders (i.e. Scouts elected to lead) decided to remove the "sliders" from each tent rope and scheduled tent-pitching amd tarp-pitching contests as "gathering time activities."

I find this to be a very curious comment.

So, perhaps, could it be, that the "Duty to God" element was introduced to U.S. Scouting to entice religious denominations to accept the Chartered Organization role on a denomination-wide basis?

And, perhaps, so adopted because the SOLE religious denomination in Great Britain was the Church of England (courtesy of some arrogant King), but in America, many denominations were active and Constitutionally NEVER to be circumscribed.

Does anyone have any further insight beyond my limited knowledge?

Was the CofE truly the only religious denomination in the UK in 1907?

In some instances there will be four people: you may need to include the Scout's parent, cc'd on e-mails for YPT purposes, if the Scout needs to reach out to you to set up the initial meeting, or for completion of partials afterwards.

I have been copying the Unit leader to prevent "one-on-one" communication.  A parent is now required?

  5. Fourth in line for Presidential succession in tyhe 1970's was Unted States Senator who had been Exaulted Cyclops (leader) of a chapter of the KKK whch he had started and  who fillibustered against the 1964 Civil Rights Act and strongly opposed the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

“I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.”

In his final years, he said he regreted his associain with the KKK.

    Things change.

  6. I have always electected to wear the uniform in accordance with BSA rules, to the extent that they are coherent.  Even the rule that official BSA "hat pins" may not be worn on the official BSA hat or cap.

In training, I have advocated to Scouts and adults that they set a good example by following the rules.

I do not "call out" adults who ignore the uniforming rules because they may simply be unaware of the rules and because we have been increasingly short of adult resources over my fifty-three years in the program.

I have "solved" the absurd Eagle Mentor Pin problem by buying, second-hand, an official BSA blazer for Courts of Honor.

  7. "That is right up there with hanging up on a Scout who calls asking if you will counsel him on a Merit Badge.  After all, one-on-one telephone conversations are expressly prohibited."

i could never bring myself to do that.  i did ask that they have someone on the line the next time.

Nor did I erase emails addressed ony to me.

Rules are easy if the rule-maker knows nothing about the facts on the groud.  Like "stay put" in each and every wilderness survival situation.

  8. THIS MIGHT BE IT:

"CARY, N.C. (AP) — A student has been arrested and charged with hacking into the computer system and changing some grades at Panther Creek High School in Cary.

Multiple media outlets reported that police said the arrest followed a months-long investigation.

The student from Morrisville has been charged with felony accessing government computers, felony breaking and entering, and misdemeanor accessing government computers.

If convicted on all the charges, the student could be sentenced to up to four years in prison.

School administrators noticed a problem with their computer system in October.

The investigation determined that grades had been changed for a number of senior students, including his own.

School officials have said they will restore proper class ranking and notify colleges of the proper grades."

"Student charged in Panther Creek High hacking

    Posted February 3, 2016 10:07 a.m. EST Updated February 3, 2016 6:28 p.m. EST

CARY, N.C. — A Panther Creek High School student was arrested Wednesday in connection with a hack of the school's computer system last fall, police said.

Saivamsi Hanumanthu, 17, of  Pilot Hill Drive in Morrisville, was charged with felony accessing government computers, felony breaking and entering and misdemeanor accessing government computers. He was released on a unsecured $15,000 bond to the custody of his parents.

Cary police began investigating unauthorized access to Panther Creek High's computers on Oct. 13 and later determined that the system had been hacked into several times and that student grades had been changed.

Wake County school officials discovered that an email sent from one Panther Creek High teacher to another a few days before the initial hacking contained keystroke-tracking malware, according to a search warrant in the case.

The affidavit police submitted to obtain the warrant to search Hanumanthu's home stated that he had been seen sneaking into the school office after school on Oct. 22 and was later confronted by a teacher in a locked classroom with what appeared to be a laptop computer.

Two weeks before that, according to the affidavit, the PowerSchool system, a state database that tracks student attendance and grades at the school, was hacked into on three separate occasions, and the grades and class ranks of six students were changed. A total of 90 grades were changed in the system, and half of them belonged to Hanumanthu, a senior who saw his class rank improve from 67th to seventh, the warrant states."

  9. The aplicable law is trademlaw.  Copyright law is not applicable.

The objjective of trademark law is to protect consemers by prevent confusion about who made the product bearing the trademark; in this case BSAor it's licensee or someone who is neither.  As noted above, vigorous defense of the trademark agaist all illegal users is essential to maintaining the exclusivity of the mark.  Hence the threatening letter to the volunteer fire drepartment painitng fire hydrants to look like Snoopy. TM. (Actual situation.)   BSA has failed to defend "Boy Scout" as a modifier of knives and other camping gear  for decades.

One of tens of thousands of examples:  "VINTAGE CAMPCO USA VINTAGE boy scout camper KNIFE"

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/255036211025?hash=item3b6157bf51:g:N4YAAOSw4ulgwYVl

The knife is, manifestly, not a "boy scout" knife.  it was not sold by, or licensed by, B.S.A.

The BSA symbol is another matter, and BSA is well-advised to closely control use in order to protect exclusivity of use of that symbol by BSA or licensees.
