  1. I briefly lost access to the website this morning, but I was in class, and probably shouldn't be browsing the forums anyways. I think whatever was wrong has been resolved. Sentinel947
  2. What is the purpose of this thread other than to bash on Eagle Scouts? Yes, some Eagle Scouts don't live up to the ideals they professed. Some lose track of those ideals. I fail to see the point of this thread.
  3. Basement, stand firm brother. This is one of those lessons this Scout needs to learn, "cheaters never win." I don't think your expectations are unrealistic. Sentinel947
  4. In my council, Dan Beard council, we provide a Life to Eagle Seminar a few times a year through the National eagle Scout Association. I'm pretty it's always been free with the exception of we ask for a donation to cover the cost of the pizza that we buy. Normally the seminar runs about two hours. What the heck is your council doing Basmentdweller? Otherwise, how did you like Wayne National Forest?
  5. I applaud your son for deciding to do his Eagle Award presentation during a troop COH. The separate cornonations are completely unnecessary. Having his award presented to him during the Troop COH gives more people the chance to attend, and also allows him to give back to his Troop by inspiring the younger Scouts, many of which may have never seen it before. Congratulations on your sons achievement! Sentinel947
  6. They can do Assistant Scoutmaster like things, but be wary of having them "act" as an Assistant Scoutmaster. Often enough in many units Assistant Scoutmasters do things in place of the Scoutmaster like Scoutmasters conferences, this should not be delegated to Unit college Scouter Reserve. While I'm thumping the book, Unit College Scouter Reserve members are NOT supposed to sit on Board of Reviews either. The BSA is very vague (which is good) on what UCSR is actually supposed to do. As far as I can tell, they help in the mentoring role that ASM's usually do, without the institutionalized duties
  7. I took my IOLS and Scoutmaster Specific when I was 18. I wanted to be involved in the unit I earned my Eagle in. I actually enjoyed the training, and I knew far more than anybody else in the course. Even so, it was a great refresher, helped me make contacts with new leaders around the council, and it "certified" me for if I ever volunteer with another unit. The other slightly unknown option is that they can take YPT and register as "Unit College Scouter Reserve." If they want to stick around, help out, serve as role models, but not take the trainings required for becoming an ASM, that's proba
  8. I'm planning to go see it on Saturday morning. I hope it's good.
  9. Seems pretty easy to justify. The conclave to elect the pope is the selection of one of the most influential (Not powerful) men on Earth. He's the spiritual leader of over an estimate 1 billion people. (Disclaimer) I'm a Catholic American. I doubt the NSA thinks Pope Francis or the Cardinals are terrorists supporters, it's more of spying for the sake of useful information. I think it's wrong, but I've got a very large bias considering well... I'm Catholic.
  10. The Vatican doesn't seem too concerned on it's part, but I'm sure Obama will claim he didn't know about it, just like he doesn't know about ANYTHING going on in his administration. Sentinel947
  11. I believe somewhere in my Boy Scout Handbook it called a First Class Scout "the all around perfect Scout." However, First Class like Eagle, should not be pushed as the ends of the program. Advancement is a method. The journey is the purpose. It is a mistake to push the rank as a checklist. Their proficiency in the skills from T-1st teaches them confidence and arms them with the useful skills they'll need for their adventures. Sentinel947
  12. Why would it matter if it's a non-Eagle required? I think this is a great learning opportunity for the lad, cheating is never worth it. The hard way )actually doing things right) is worth the effort.
  13. Encourage him to stay with Scouting now that he earned his Eagle. As far as recognition goes, a shadowbox of his Scouting and Cub Scouting times. Other than that, a photo album would be pretty cool. I lean to agreeing with Basmentdweller, the Scout's best reminders of his time in Scouting is in his character and his memories.
  14. KDD: buying a pack is kinda a scary proposition with younger Scouts, as they tend to outgrow em. So keep that in mind, your son will grow, and that pack of an 11 year old could be too small in a few years. Jblake: I don't think dead would even begin to describe the state you'd be in. Sentinel947
  15. JBlake, sometimes I have difficulty figuring out if it's spam or a real post, I tend to lean on leaving it alone if I can't tell the difference.
  16. Scouter99/Packsaddle, a moderator has the ability to remove any post or topic If they wanted to. When the last group of new moderators was appointed (I was one of those) we agreed that we didn't want to censor posts, and if we felt something crossed the line, we would ask the poster to edit their post before taking action on it. We then inform the other moderators of any actions we take. We almost never delete whole topics, unless it's an advertisement or obvious spam. An angry or heated argument isn't justification for us to remove a thread. None of the moderator
  17. Woodbadge is similiar to almost everything else in life, it is what you make of it. I'm glad I've found another devotee of Scoutmastercg.com. Keep attending your roundtable and gaining more knowledge about Scouting! Teaching IOLS and SM- Specifics is a great way to improve Scouting in your area! Yours in Scouting, Sentinel947
  18. That's a pretty unfair characterization of DE's there Basementdweller.
  19. The infographic isn't perfect. I like the system you put together Matt. I posted the infographic from Scoutmastercg.com because it illustrates the point I wanted to make, that Boy Leadership isn't a on/off switch, and it's a progression that both the Scouts and the Adults have to make together. In your system the unit I serve is somewhere between step 3 and step 2. But I agree with the infographic that I posted in many regards, some troops really do operate where adults make the decisions and the Scouts are just along for the ride. Sentinel947
  20. I wrote to Mr. Green and his response can be found here. http://www.scoutmastercg.com/what-do-scouts-decide/. All credit for the Infographic goes to him. Yours in Scouting, Sentinel947
  21. Wow.... regardless of if you buy their "protecting children" argument, that's not their call, but somebody with the State Park. What a failure in sound judgement.
  22. Clarke Green over at Scoutmastercg.com posted this article which has an interesting metric of Youth led/ vs Adult led. http://www.scoutmastercg.com/ladder-of-youth-leadership-infographic/ I'll write to him and see if he's got anything else over there. Also, Matt, thank you for driving conversations here in a positive manner. Yours in Scouting, Sentinel947
  23. Matt, I'm impressed people don't take advantage of your system and get a free removal. That's a fantastic fundraiser though.
