  1. Yea Basementdweller. I did read her post. I think her experience is an isolated incident. Just because we disagree with people doesn't stop us from being courteous.
  2. Perhaps, when coffee or tabacco destroys the lives of over 20 million people and ravages Europe, then we can start comparing things to Nazis.
  3. Frankscout, lets not tivilize one of the most destructive idelogies of violence in the history of mankind, Nazism to people who want to ban cigarettes. Because it's a controversial thing, I'd say no, but the issue has never come up in my unit.
  4. As a Catholic, it always drives me nuts to see Catholic only units. One benefit to the Church in sponsoring Scouting is that it helps our Church build positive relationships with the people who join the unit, that's valuable regardless of whether they are Catholic or not.
  5. Basementdweller, your accusation is unfounded, please stop. GeorgiaMom, I think your case is a rarity. It's not necessarily an authoritative treatsie on the matter. While the BSA professionals can be wrong from time to time (Ok.... alot of the time) they generally know what they are talking about. Talking to a CPA should be unnecessary if the Charter Organization does it's job. This is a forum of Scout Leaders, lets be a little more courteous and kind to one another. Sentinel947.
  6. "Show me a poorly uniformed troop, and I'll show you a poorly uniformed leader" Sir Robert Baden Powell. You seem to hit the issue where you talk about your units leaders. Honestly in my unit, our adults model the proper uniform, and that expectation has filtered down to most of the boys. We don't make an issue of it, but it's an expectation. However, that is at the Boy Scout level, where it's a bit easier to do that sort of thing. I personally like full uniforms, but I don't get too wound up if Scouts don't have it. I'd rather have Scouts on the trips and meetings with
  7. Welcome to the Scouter Forum. As berliner mentioned, most of us are adults, but there are a few youth (under 18 years old) who post and comment from time to time. It'd be nice to have more youth here. They always seem to have wonderful perspectives on things. Sentinel947
  8. I would assume this is something the committee needs to sit down and discuss. The PLC should also discuss this. As far as whom should go where, I'd say that's up to individual members, but it'd be important t make sure there are committed adult volunteers with each unit.
  9. My Unit split into two units a few years before I joined in 2005. Probably split in like 1999 or so. Split was amicable. How large is the unit you are considering splitting?
  10. Not cool. Glad the Council offered to fix it. Really stinks to see stuff like that happen, especially with the Boy Scouts name attached to it.
  11. If that is your troops practice, to have parents watch the patrols, then the Troop Committee should trust your observations. I trust your observation because I have the same function in my Troop (except I'm an ASM), where I advise the Troop Guides. I've seen a Scout with a behavior disorder be egged on by other Scouts to harass another Scout. Size is no indicator of social strength or manipulative/persuasive ability. Adults should realize this. Have you brought your observation to the Scoutmaster? It really is his role to deal with, long before it reaches the Troop Committ
  12. What's your position in the troop? Regardless, the Committee doesn't have the authority to remove the current PL, that is simply beyond them. Regardless, they should trust and respect your imput on the matter, as you have been observing the patrols for some time now. I'm actually not sure what the process is for removing a Patrol Leader. I'd assume that would come from the Scoutmaster, but it might just be that the Patrol needs to hold new elections. I believe your version of events, and James's parent need to be called in and have a chat with the Scoutmaster, as does J
  13. If certain people means Green Bar Bill, then yes, that's a change I'm hoping will happen.
  14. Haha. That post was a mess wasn't it. BD and JBlake, I edited my first post for a bit more clarity. You two were like... "WHAT?" I'm not crazy I swear! =P I would hope that would be his path in the future. Something he did AFTER earning his Eagle. Mainly staying involved with Scouting. Not advocating for a 14 year old JASM. He's got alot of time left in Scouting to take more useful positions like PL or SPL. I can't imagine ending my Scouting "career" at 14. I would never have been an SPL, Guide or Instructor if I had left at 14. And jblake: I don't work with a one Patrol Troop. I w
  15. Doesn't prove anything other than he can sample a wide range of topics. I never put much stock in merit badges as a youth, and I still don't.I hope he continues on and holds more positions like PL, SPL, Guide, Instructor. Maybe towards then end of his youth involvement he becomes a JASM.
  16. Eagles are just people. There are good ones, great ones, poor ones, and evil ones. For every dummy that goes out and smokes pot and shoots a police officer, there is a young man running a nonprofit or teaching in the inner city, or in the Army. I hate the BSA's Push Eagle at all costs, but that's out of my hands. "Been is scouting long enough that I have seen Extremely poor quality Eagles in both adult and youth scout members. From poor personal and ethical decisions to not having the basic scouting skills." And some of them make good personal and ethical decisions and hav
  17. Good morning TwoCub! Mary Jane= Marijuana I'm guessing your comment means that euphemism is out of date?
  18. NeverAnEagle: I found another person besides me who finds OA Dance Teams tacky and offensive! Took a while! But like Basementdweller I've never seen the OA at a Cub Scout Crossover or Arrow of Light event.
  19. JBlake, I don't think you are an Eagle basher. I would agree that the people who do not live up to the ideals and earned the rank do more damage to the value of the rank than anybody else. After all actions speak louder than words. I think we are all trying to reach a similar point emphasizing that Scouting is a process, and the goal is the journey, moreso than the destination. Sentinel947
  20. Or you could phrase it by comparing one of the distinguished people you mentioned in the OP and one of your examples of a less than distinguished Eagle. Although making your Scouts associate the rank of Eagle with criminals and murderers is probably not the idea of the century. I have one I'd like to use, (I think I somewhat appropriated it from a member on the forums here, but I forget whom. (If you remember claim your credit!!!!!) I hold up an Eagle rank badge. and ask "How much is this worth?" Scouts probably don't have a reply. I then ask a few Scouts or Parents who h
  21. Packsaddle, I'll buy that. "We give them opportunities to make themselves" I like how you phrased that.
  22. Blake, I'd have to agree with your ASM, dodged a bullet indeed!
  23. The point is to make our Scouts into better citizens and people, earning First Class and Eagle should facilitate that if the parents back the heck off and let an experienced Scoutmaster like yourself run your program that aim will be filled. I think the worth of the Eagle Scout rank is highly subjective. but an Eagle Scout Rank earned by simply filling out the checklist on bare requirements and then booking it speaks alot to what the Eagle Rank is worth. What bothers me about Eagle Scouts is it builds a superiority complex. With fancy neckerchiefs and all the like. It's a
  24. I gotta agree. While I earned my Eagle I've always viewed it in the context that it symbolizes my whole experience in Scouting, and not the earning of the rank itself. Through that context it means alot to me. The rank itself is not terribly difficult to earn with time and persistance, but HOW it is earned matters. When we turn it into a checklist driven by overzealous parents then yes, I think the award loses the meaning it should have. -Sentinel947
  25. When I took Crime Prevention Merit Badge, the Counselor was a Patrol Officer in my town. He had recently returned to his job and other activities after being shot. He was shot by a young man after a car chase where Mary Jane was involved. The perp who shot the Officer had earned his Eagle Scout a few years earlier. I'm glad his run-in with a wayward Eagle Scout didn't take away his love of Scouting. If you are willing, I'm thinking this might be good to merge with an older topic with a very similar topic: http://www.scouter.com/forum/open-discussion-program/390759-should-we-or-they-b
