  1. I remember one time that I found a version of taps that included the sign language to the song. I will try to find it and post a link if I can. I think it is pretty cool, because it uses the words to taps
  2. OK sorry folks. I forgot to mention that this was a Cub Scout Campout There are some other things that I think should be brought into light so you know whre I am coming from We are going on a Pack Overnighter. We are going to our Council Scout Reservation. We have reservations made for a campsite along with adirondacks (shelters) incase of inclement weather. It is a short walk to the waterfront, where we can partake in Fishing activities. It is a large moving river so we won't be able to go boating. There is a seabase nearby that has a long dock at it and I think
  3. The variation that I heard to "My Bonnie" was one that said My Body lies under the Ocean My Body lies under the see My body lies under the ocean So Dredge up my body for me Dredge up, Dredge up, Oh dredge up my body for me And so on, you get the point I will see what others I can find
  4. I looked over this thread quickly so if I repeat something then please excuse me. Just as a little side note of qualifications, I have been a medic with the Army for 10 years and have been working in the civilian sector as and EMT - I for 7. Currently going through Paramedic school Not everyone who is allergic to something (we will say bees for this example) will so allergic reactions the first time. There is a histamine response that must be triggered. Sometimes this does not happen til the second time they get stung. I carry an Epi-pen for some of my adults. There are 2
  5. Here is one suggestion. Maybe if you could talk to a local National Guard Medical unit, you might ask if you could borrow a bunch of litters from them. Them you could make a task of it. 5 boy teams. All about the same size, and have one act as the victim and the other 4 carry him between stations. when get ready to move to the next have then switch out. Or if you don't have that resource, make litters from poles and blankets. Just a thought.
  6. could you post the name of the workbooks that you got from FEMA. I was trying to see if I could find it and I am having some technical difficulties
  7. I guess I will just have to wait until I too can get my BALOO training. We have one who is Baloo trained. He is going. But he is also letting me do a lot of the planning and he is there to help if needed. I ask questions here because I hope that with all the wisdom that my fellow scouters have, someone can guide me along the way until my baloo training this summer. I have been asking for help and suggestions with camp items. And almost everytime I do someone mentions that the baloo person needs to do it or I need to get my baloo training. I know this but I am trying to get thes
  8. "Perhaps we should petition our legislators to pass a law requiring all marshmallows to be non-flammable?" I will admit, I laughed. But if really want to get down to it, all solids burn if heated enough.
  9. I have not looked into the new scout handbook too much. There are a few things that I dod notice though. I noticed that the pages were of the new "write in the rain" style. I can say that my scout years edition (10th) had the covers, covered in scotch tape so that they would hold up in the wet weather. Yes the book itself is also slightly thicker from the pages swelling up when they got wet. But this was a good book. I also remember the one before that that had a norman rockwell pic on the front with the boyscouts pointing across the river. Here is another question. Do they still
  10. Like I said in another post. When reviewing what you are doing, ask your self this. "Is this stupid and will this get someone hurt?" If you have to ask this then it is probably stupid. But if it isn't and you can say that the chances of getting hurt are low, and this would be something that any other right-minded adult would allow thier boys to do, then it probably is OK. Lets use common sense. Hang gliding is not a Cub Sport. Base Jumping is not a scout sport. But to let cubs cook on an open fire with assistance and close supervision, (As the other topic was about) that could be consi
  11. I have not referenced any materials, so what I say is no law. I would expect that if you were roasting marshmallows with your cubs, someone would be there if there was one that burst into flames. Worst case, let it drop into the fire and get another. S'mores are one thing that my Cubs are looking foward to. It just takes some common sense to keep people from getting hurt and tents from getting damaged. If you are able to fling a flaming marshmallow into a tent, then you may want to look at how close your tents are to the campfire. These are just some things that I can see. If your leade
  12. I am sorry I forgot to include that this was a Cub Scout Pack overnighter. I just know that there are many who have read a lot of my posts and know that part about me so far, but for those who have given suggetions, I will try them. I think I will try to give assignments based on the ages of the boys and have parent participation. Maybe that will work
  13. Does anyone out there have suggestions for how to break down campsite duties. We are going on an overnight trip and I was wondering what would be the best way to get everyone involved with campsite responsibilities. Any Help???
  14. I was thinking about when I was a scout and was wondering something. Do your scouts still teach the long lost art of snipe hunting to the younger scouts on one of their fisrt campouts. I know that this can be considered a form of hazing in some peoples eyes, but I was just rememberingthe right of passage that I went through when I went snipe hunting. Soes this still happen??
  15. I am posting to admit I missed something when I read the post by ScoutNut. I Missed the word "under" I can see what you are talking about. And I think we were meaning the same thing just talkin in different languages.
  16. GoldWinger I think to say that the War on Terror is not a war is wrong. Iraq is not the only place that we are fighting. There is Afganistan, and the threat that is right here in the US. I know that this is off topic, but to those of us who have fought in the war on terror, we would be hard pressed to call it anything but. On another topic, Good job with the general flag knowledge and why the stripes face foward on Naval ships. YiS SctDad
  17. ScoutNut I think you might be mistaken. THe way that I have been told is these are the requirements Age 7 - Cut and Dry. Must be 7. There is nothing saying that a boy cannot start halfway through the year. Or he Must have completed kindergarten. I know some are going to comment on this. My DE is getting ready to have a round up here in a few weeks for new tigercubs. This will be good so they can attend some of our summertime events with us and get into scouting. Review so you know what I have interpreted and been told Age of 7 or 6 and completed Kindergarten
  18. If you have any doubt, contact the local American Legion and ask for their assistance. They should be glad to help. For those that are wondering why the flags on the military uniforms are backwards, here is the reawson. They are displaying the flag of the advancing military. Meaning when the units are moving foward the flag would naturally have the stripes pointed to the rear. Think of whe a flag is on a car that is going down the road. Here is another question for all of you. Why do the flags on Naval Ships have the stripes pointing to the front of the ship???
  19. Hardwoods are good for fires. So when you are going through the woods, look for something that is hard and dense in material. It will be a little harder to light but once it is going it should provide a good fire. Sometimes the soft woods are OK in that you won't have to go through and wait forever for it to go out and waste good firewood for each fire. Do you catch my drift. Hope this helps. YIS SctDad

  22. I know this is a hit to bring this back up but I am hoping that some others out there will have some more information on this topic to help us with this theme. we will be having a meeting next week and I am just looking for some more help. If you have any ideas for this theme let me know.
  23. I saw one some where that said you coupd do it like this. Prior to building the find, place a fountain style fire works display at the bottom. Use a model rocket igniter in the fuse part and run the wire off to the side out of sight. When the scouts gather, tell them a story about helping a small wood elf and he promised to help you when he had the chance. Then call for him. at this time have another parent off to the side start the rocket igniter and it sould light the fuse. NOTE: Try this at home first, I am still waiting to try it myself to make sure that it works right.
  24. Here are some Ideas for the food. Remember that they had to eat food that was easy to preserve. Salted meats, hard tack (Biscuits), and things like that. Maybe think about some potatos for a soup. Now after looking they said at some websites that they would drink wine and beer. Well that may not go over too well. Maybe you can have scoutwine. Grape juice or orange juice. Or maybe mix several juices together to amke the GROG. Don't forget the oranges. Check out this link for some pirate jokes. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070626163203AAfob1u I will s
