  1. Rooster This "Farm Boy" from Kentucky would like to know if you always resort to name calling when you have a discussion with someone who doesn't agree with your views? For what it's worth my son is a SP and he just laughed when he heard the arguments that the accused MP's performed these acts on their own.
  2. Rooster, I know you asked Beaver the following questions but let me provide you with my answers. Dont you believe in defending the defenseless? Absoulutely. However, this was not the reason given for invading Iraq. If no other reason, was it not worth the effort and cost to prevent the torture and murder of innocent lives in Iraq? No. Do you think for one minute that Iraq was not trying to develop chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons? No. If several hundred thousand people can't find evidence after a year then a logical and rationa
  3. So now I know why Bush does not watch the news.... if he remains uniformed ...then he can't be held accountable!!!
  4. Rooster7 Responsibility flows downward accountability flows upward. The individuals who performed these acts are responsible for their actions and behaviors. Their superiors are accountable for their actions - and yes Bush is at the top of the chain and thus accountable.
  5. Fscouter I beg to differ with you. In a small troop with limited adult participation leaders will fullfill many different roles. To the best of my knowledge it takes a minimum of 6 registered adults (5 if the IH and CR are one in the same) there is a minimum of 3 adults for the committee the CC and 2 MC. There is no requirement for a registered ASM.
  6. Thank you Bob White. You are correct Greeneagle5 did write CM and ASM not MC and ASM. As they say in sports My Bad.
  7. Greeneagle5 You stated that you are both a ASM and CM. You can only hold one postion. If your are a CM with ASM duties then you can sit on the BOR. If you are registered as a ASM then no.
  8. OneHour and Bob White are correct - it starts with the SPL (I would even throw in the ASPL). It even gets more basic than that - it starts with the PL ans APL. You must work one on one and help guide them through the process. Remember baby steps. I use a roadmap analogy with new youth leaders - I place a map of the U.S. on a table and ask the boy if he could go anywhere he wanted where would he go. Sometimes its Florida, Alaska ect. I then have them show me the route they would take. The boy usually traces an interstate or 2 until he gets there. I ask him what he just did. I generally
  9. Scoutmaster Ron I would give you the same advice I would give to one of my scouts concerning a rule they didn't agree with. A Scout is Reverent "A Scout follow th erules of his family,l school, and gtroop. He obeys the laws of his community and country. If he thinks these rules and laws are unfair, he tries tohave them changed in an orderly manner rather than disobey them." As Scoutmaster you can go the CC and persuade her to go to the IH and reverse the rule. If that fails tell her that you are going directly to the IH and talk to them about it.
  10. Like Eamonn I'm in the "Butt Out" camp. Isn't
  11. Ed, I have also wondered about the verse you quote. I am somewhat lazy by nature and haven't looked itup. Thanks for your reply. The verse says quite a bit.
  12. eagle54 The advice you received from Philmont was probably the best you will recieve. Training needs to be activity specific. If you are going to swim the mile during summercamp you get ready by swimming, if you are going to run a marathon you get ready by running, if you are going to backpack 100 miles you get ready by backpacking. Regarding your allergies you should be able to maintain an agressive training schedule with only mild discomfort. Asthma is a different problem. I suffer from mild to severe allergies and have run 18 marathons and 5 ultra marathons with little probl
  13. I am a great fan of box ovens. I've found that liquor boxes work best (the cardboard they use is a little thicker than most boxes). I've used duct tape but have found that furnace tape works better. I would advise that you purchase a name brank charcoal they seem to be more consistent.
  14. I am very fortunate. I am in sales and work out of my house. As long as my production meets or exceeds goals I can do what I want. Paul
  15. Small tidbit of information. Most banks do not verify signatures on checks less than $1,000. It is cheaper to pay the fraud cost than to hire staff to do the actual work. Your check will most likely clear with only one signature. Our Troop and Pack accounts are non profit and do not pay any service charges. As a banker I would strongly urge all checks be made payable to the Troop or Pack. Paul
  16. I agree with its fotoscout. CS camping is supposed to fun and safe. I've not only taken the BALOO course I've also been on staff. BALOO does not make a participant an expert camper, only experience can do that. However, the course willvgive you a good start. As CM I attempt to get a new noncamping parent (Tiger or Wolf)BALOO trained every year so that they can gain experience slowly. The hope is that when their son(s) becomes a Webelo they become the Packs experienced campers. BALOO in my humble opinion is an excellent course for any and all leaders. Paul
  17. Proud Eagle Our Troop has attended Camp Crooked Creek the last two years and will be going again this year. I don't have a lot of experience with other camps so my opinion might be of limited use. The facilites are excellent with a waterfront that allows water skiing, motor boating, canoeing sailing, mile swim ect. The Dan Boone (first year scout) program is okay, I feel that they try to get to much done. Merit Badge sessions are also okay. The level of instruction on some is suspect. Overall I think it is a good camp.
  18. The following comes directly from www.oa-bsa.org: "Other than defining the length of time needed for a camping activity to be considered a long-term camp*, the National Order of the Arrow Committee leaves the interpretation of the camping requirement to the unit leader. * A "long-term camp" is one consisting of at least six consecutive days and five nights of resident camping. A "short-term camp" is anything less than that." The requirements are: 1. Must be registered 2. Must be First Class 3. Must have 15 days and nights camping during the previous 2 years prior to his
  19. I've heard of one of our local packs that award a "Heavy Shoulder or Heavy Metal" award for boys who earn all the badges.
  20. We proudly receive two issues each month. My boys compete with each other at the dinner table telling the jokes. I was lucky to pick up several issues from the mid 60's at an auction (50 cents each). Paul
  21. FOG Your wrote the following: Democracy, political system in which the people of a country rule through any form of government they choose to establish. In modern democracies, supreme authority is usually exercised by popularly elected representatives. The representatives may be replaced by the electorate according to the legal procedures of recall and referendum, and they are in principle responsible to the electorate. Article II of the Constitution states the following: Section 1. The executive power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America. He shall h
  22. We canceled our January outing due to weather. The Campmaster called me at 2:45 p.m. on Friday and told me that the camp was closed due to ice. He had tried all day to clear the roads but wasn't able to get them passable.
  23. With all due respect to everyone who has made a post to this thread. I am sensing a level of vindictiveness. It is almost as if we are casting the boy away if he chooses not to become a Boy Scout. Im sorry, even though you have been a Cub Scout since 1st grade and earned your AOL you are a second-class citizen because you didnt join my Troop. Why, if we truly put the boys first, would we ever treat one in such a fashion? It is about the boys it isnt about us the leaders. If it is so important to you that only those boys who are entering your Troop be part of the Ceremony then hold o
  24. Bob said it well. I can't improve on it. We used the same method of electing Pls as Bob and it worked well. We discussed it with the Scouts helped them figure different options and then let them decide with method worked for them.
  25. I'm in agreement with Twocubdad and Sparkie. I am the Cubmaster of the Pack and an Assistant Scoutmaster of the Troop. One of my most enjoyable activites as CM is the writing and presentation of ceremonies. I try to use symbolisim in my ceremonies. In my opinion the Bridge symbolizes the "bridging" over to a new or different trail or path. Even if the boy does not join a troop he is leaving his Cub Scout Trail behind him. What purpose does it serve to exclude him?
