  1. You mean other than carwashes, peddling candy bars, refreshments at parades, recycling projects (from newspapers, to cans, to ink jet cartridges). How about, especially if you have a nice big chartered organization just chock full of seasoned citizens like most of the troops here in Florida, a silent auction for two scout teams to do chores around the house from yard clean up, to painting and trimming, garage cleaning, light moving. Have the teams decide what they are willing to do and for how many hours and let the bidding begin. You will also need an articulate scout to be the pitchman to go
  2. Sand Hill Grace For the hills, for the sand, for the bounty of the land, for water bright and the pristine sunlight. For all who guide our programs path for all opportunities that Scouting hath we thank Thee, O Lord.
  3. If you present it at kind of the cub scouts purple heart the medal nobody really wants to earn it will prevent the overachievers from wanting one of their own.
  4. Those kids are not only found in scouting one of my nephews was for a couple of years on a first name basis with all the staff in his home town ER he had so many stitches and observations and whatever, fortunately he outgrew it. As to the food thing we had a WEBELOS come along on our winter campout the mission was to cook their own breakfast. This kid scrambled and ate an even dozen eggs in his mess kit frying pan over the fire to the amazement of his dad who was along who had never seen him eat eggs. According to the kid he just did not like the way mom and dad fixed them he eats eggs even
  5. Our troop works closely with a large pack helping them with the crossover ceremony Other troops that boys are crossing over to come and help. Our SM wears a hat in the pack so we cancel our meeting and just do the crossover that week. It is held outdoors we have a large bonfire and a bridge for them to cross At the end of the regular pack meeting parents and other cubs who want to watch go to the viewing area while the Webelos are taken on a hike by guides from the troop with Tiki torches. They meander all over the grounds of the CO then are brought to the boy scout trail where there are smud
  6. Why is Blue and gold banquet mixing with the crossover ceremony? Round here the troops cooperate in putting on the ceremony for the crossovers complete with bonfire and "flaming" arrows. All of the cub scouts do their Blue and Gold earlier in the year typically with a theme as it makes decorating and food choices easier. The theme is to make the choices easier not to complicate things. One I remember is Fiesta everyone brought a mexican oriented covered dish and we had a pinata and a clown sombrero's for centerpieces. Council usually makes you hold an FOS presentation as well.
  7. Buy yourself some black cotton socks and see if those help. I used to have the same problems when wearing "dress" socks which are usually artificial fiber but got relief by switching to black cotton.
  8. It sounds like the council was giving you requirements to become a Shooting Sports Director. I would check with a shooting sports director or the shooting sports committee to see if there is a breakdown especially for cub scout events. I can not see how they could maintain enough staff if they require all this training. Here we have cards for each individual discipline Rifle, shotgun, black powder, archery, rendezvous, and cub scout. The first three require 20 hours OJT to get a card and then 10 hours every 2 years to maintain. The last two are 10 hours then 5 hours. We are a volunteer workfor
  9. Worn out old equipment is fairly standard for cub scout day camp shooting sports activities. I have been the shooting sports director for ours the past three years and most of my actual work time is fixing equipment. The teenage Jr. Range masters actually run the ranges. I oil, glue, and duct tape bb guns. Put new rubbers on wrist rockets and restring bows. We do have enough arrows but some of them do show their age. Some of the bb guns were so worn that if the gun was oriented downward the bb would roll out the muzzle. Others would loose their air charge. This is easily solvable with some cas
  10. I think everyone has made my point heck I remember arm wrestling, Indian leg wrestling, and cock fights. All our P,C. notions are responsible for our couch potato metro-sexual kids. For matters of "honor" why not turn them loose with boxing gloves. Then again I am kind of a throwback who still thinks that maybe the code duello was not such a bad idea.(This message has been edited by scottteng)
  11. My son is involved in martial arts and one of his favorite parts is sparring which is done under supervision and with appropriate safety gear. I think we should bring back boxing gloves, head gear and a ring and let the combatants have at for a few rounds. Such behavior seems to be hard wired into the male genetic code.
  12. Typically the OA rep for our troop will wear his OA sash to the COH as one of his responsibilities is to give a brief OA presentation to the assembled adults most of whom are entirely clueless about Boy Scouts. That way if the youth they are there to support gets elected they will see it as the honor it is. We also have each scout give a brief talk on one of the activity they have done since the last COH. The assembled families love it since each scout has their moment at the mike.
  13. Eamonn to my knowledge you have not asked celtic music fans to reveal themselves before and I am sure there are more here than you think. My 11 yr old daughter is a fiddler and plays several tunes of celtic origin along with old time, scottish, canadian and even klezmer. I am fascinated with all that music mostly from her playing some of it. A lot of the fiddle tunes are very similar. Her violin teacher plays a lot of real complex celtic stuff as well.
  14. BALOO training would be helpful especially to a Tiger den leader as it is about planning outings not just about camping though it does cover that too.
  15. The practical answer is yes. When a scout comes to a SM or ASM and says I would like to work on E Prep we would normally tell them to work on first aid first as it is required for E Prep. I suppose we could split lots of rhetorical hairs but why?
  16. Most of them are not into marching very much. At our local parade they are much more likely to have a stand selling snacks and drinks to raise funds for what they do do which is go camping in strange, interesting and sometimes expensive places.
  17. Buy him a couple of spools of inexpensive twine refer him to his boy scout handbook and see what happens.
  18. In our troop we require YPT of every adult even the just parent sort. This is because of issues that are now hopefully behind us. How is a parent to know a rule is being violated if they do not know what the rules are. It makes everyone's life easier particularly when the parent wants to drop a youth off early for something and there is not proper leadership in place as yet.
  19. My recommendation is always to get den chiefs from another troop because in this area most troop/pack affiliates meet on the same night of the week and at appx. the same time. A den chief from your affiliate troop misses a lot of troop meeting time. I tell cub leaders to seek out scouts from troops that meet on a different night. This is a fairly densely populated suburban area so there are lots of troops and packs to pick from. Cub leaders should also get buy in from the den chief's transportation system (parents usually) or be prepared to provide same.
  20. In addition to all the official and un-official boy scout patches there are also other patches for things. Our state park system here in Florida has a state park patch with rockers for each park we have Boy Scouts that have camped at as many as 8 parks. We also have historical trails patches for each trail hiked. There is no limit to what can go on a cub scout vest or boy scout blanket or jacket. The boy scouts can also wear their favorite on their temp patch pocket. We have boys with their state park patch and a string of rockers underneath.
  21. No bailout for the UAW they have finally managed to kill the golden goose. Cars are manufactured quite profitably in this country by Toyota, Nissan, Isuzu, BMW, Hyundai. The entire problem is the UAW they deserve what they get. Should we resurrect some buggy whip manufacturers , how about AMC, Studebaker, or Nash. GM & Ford should go bankrupt and reorganize, Let the market work. Michigan needs to really become a business friendly state not just advertise that they are then their economy will turn around.
  22. When my son first started in scouting in North Florida the scouts had the scout hut which was located at the city park right next to the boys and girls club. Dens met their regularly but the pack meetings were at the local junior college. The girl scouts also met there and I am sure a troop did as well just from the stuff I remember on the walls. The scouts "owned" the hut but I am sure the city had the actual title. It was no great shakes basically an old workshop with a bathroom but it was well located and everyone knew where it was.
  23. Back when I went thru the same training we were issued a book with instructions on how to set up the different ranges with diagrams etc. There is no way that anyone could be expected to remember all the details. This may be the item you are seeking it is cub scout specific.: Shooting Sports for Cub Scouting, No. 13-550
  24. My daughter seems to earn patches just by showing up. Rededication, selling cookies, camping heck there are even some boy scout ones she has earned by just showing up cub family camp, several scout sunday ones, junior shooting sports team and even one camporee. I do not think the Girl Scout troop has ever awarded my son a patch though even though he has showed up at a couple of their events mostly skate nights as he loves to roller skate,
  25. I always get a kick out of the scout running across stage scattering a trail of dried leaves behind him when asked ny the MC what he is doing he answers I am leafing and runs off. We actually do all of these at training sessions songs too and also dole out rounds of applause and big hands kids get a bigger charge out of all of them than adults but that is who it is all about isn't it.
