  1. Find someones Grandpa who is a devoted hunter and have them bring their calls and an easy one to make. Bring him in to teach it. You might be as amazed as when we had a "grandpa" on a scout camp out and he called the turkeys right thru the camp site. I admit even I was pretty amazed.
  2. um dude every president dating back to Lincoln has been leading us down the Federalism/socialist road. I say its time to split the country into STATES. If you don't like the one ur in find one you like. Some will be socialist utopias no doubt and others will be hard scrabble almost anarchy but at least there will be no more one size fits all from Washington DC. Furthermore there will be no more overseas empire building on either side.
  3. The syllabus calls for an overnight for Webelos outdoor training. When I was on the team doing it we had the Webelos leaders come for one night of the two for IOLS. This has the added effect of starting some relationship between the troops and the WDL's.
  4. A lot depends on the camp and how much walking he will be doing. Most summer camps in this area are allowing boys to bring bikes to be their main method of transportation. This is helpful with 10 minutes and a mile between MB sessions. Normal foot gear suitable for school & after school activity should be sufficient. Two pairs better in case one gets wet. A pair of dedicated water shoes if doing aquatics and/or waterfront activities.
  5. Its up to the SM to sell his troop the requirement states also:"Have a conference with the Scoutmaster." If the boy does not understand that boy scouts is a little different than cubs so be it. Of course some troops aren't much different. Most of them get the picture when they camp with the troop and their are only two leaders apart from their parents on the trip.
  6. Our troop works the crossover for a very large pack. The pack gives them their AOL at the pack meeting inside and then they head out to the outside crossover. There are usually three or four troops to which various boys are crossing and they all have unique gifts and traditions that they do. The whole point is to crossover and be received by a troop if they are quitting they can take their AOL and go home. Most packs have some sort of gift they give to the AOL recipients as well. We "give" the boy crossing over a book, epaulets, and a warm welcome but before we do they or their parents have pa
  7. Ebay is a good source for old uniforms the other option is to wear a long sleeved t shirt underneath the uniform shirt. Looks a little tacky but hey you have a medical reason.
  8. Our DE has requested that all troops move to the green epaulets rather than the red. Compliance is minimal.
  9. Way back when when we were in cubs the almost favorite summertime pack event was the trip to the large county swimming pool where for a buck a head the boys got to swim from noon til sunset. Plenty of lifeguards and either pizza or grilled burgers and dogs for dinner made a whole day of it.
  10. http://www.scouter.com/forums/viewThread.asp?threadID=222277#id_222295 some good ideas on the above thread
  11. Those who think their is a lot of maturity in the average boy scout troop are kidding themselves. The leaders are there to keep them from killing each other until they at least learn some restraint if not real maturity. That is why we assign a guide to the new scout patrol otherwise they will eat peanut butter and bagels for every meal on the campout. The young ones need to get some camping under their belt before summer camp and that dreaded whole week away from home.
  12. Virgin Islands Council P.O. Box 7175 St. Thomas VI 00801-0175 Phone: (809) 774-2752 This is the council's number on further reflection making a local contact where you are going would make a lot of sense. Like any small community there are farmers type markets that a local can guide you to as well as larger food outlets. Which island are you visiting? Even on ST john you can pick up a loaf of bread etc for little more than you pay in a convenience store here.
  13. Why bring groceries to the USVI? Having lived on St Croix for three years many moons ago I did not starve and most items are little more than stateside cost. The groceries come in on a container ship not piece by piece. Some items coming from south america were even cheaper than the mainland. Maybe you could hook up with a local troop for help with transport and the best place to purchase supplies. The major super market used to be Pueblo. It is just possible that they boys might enjoy trying local specialties fish, plantains, local goat, and others.
  14. I do not know how things work where you are but around here a scout must produce every blue card along with the MB award card each and every rank card as well as full documentation for each and every service hour a well documented project with all the proper signatures at all the right times along with pictures to get through the district advancement person let alone the BOR. All of the dates on each and every piece of documentation must be in agreement with the councils computerized record. God help you if some counselor at summer camp their first year did not know what the date was. Of cours
  15. "Geithner wasn't even aware of da errors until they were caught by Obama's vetting team. " This statement is an out and out lie Mr Geithner signed an affidavit sworn statement each and every quarter that he worked for the IMF that he was about to receive a check from the IMF for his self employment taxes which he was required to pay. Which taxes he willfully proceeded not to pay. He should be in prison not heading the treasury.
  16. Realistically I expect that the guy in charge of making sure I pay my taxes has paid all of his own. I like the proposed Rangel rule by some congressman when one gets caught cheating and is forced to file an amendment a one checks the Rangel rule box and is forgiven all interest and penalties. Others call it the DRAG rule for Daschle Rangel and Geitner. They should all be in prison just like you would be if you forgot to pay your taxes. Impeach Obama.
  17. The other way pancakes are yummy is to wrap a piggy in the blanket. Who needs syrup when you can have pork fat.
  18. I agree it just does not look real good if they get to a District Eagle BOR and their parent is MBC for a majority of their badges. I am the parent of a 14 year old with at last check 35 merit badges. I have counseled him on exactly one that being Reading and if you are familiar with it it is not the most difficult to earn especially as I am also his main teacher as we home school. I made him work for it and in a sense he still is working on reading as I did not let him stop when he finished the MB requirements. He does not really want to take any more MB's from me says other counselors especi

  20. The other group that does a nice job of funerals is the Mason's. They have a good turnout and an impressive ceremony.
  21. Like I said in the other thread I use wax, lint and egg carton. I have an old hot pot electric cup like you have in an office or dorm room to melt the wax. works well and does not get hot enough to burn. Here in Florida we have "monkey fuzz" this is plant matter that grows out of the base of palmetto bushes and anyone that's been to Florida knows we have lots and lots of those. When harvested and prepared it is as good a fire starter as charred cloth or anything else. It can realistically be started with plain flint and steel no matter what the weather. I like the cotton balls and Vaseline thi
  22. I make the egg carton, lint, and wax fire starters for myself. All recycled materials. I use them mostly to put in my charcoal chimney to start charcoal for the dutch oven or the smoker. I have never had any odor problems and I use recycled candles collected from my rental units for the wax. Boy scouts should use neither these nor the store bought ones except in very wet weather they should have many other methods of starting a fire.
  23. A claim that free market practices brought down the banking system is spurious. It is well established that government regulations requiring loans be made without considering ability to repay is what damaged the banking system. The chances of a return to free market medicine are fairly slim. The best solution would be to remove the union aspect of medicine. If we open medical colleges with two year practical doctor programs and graduate several thousand doctors per year the inflated costs will disappear. Look at the price of chiropractic treatment which is not as regulated as medical treatment
  24. What is lost in this debate is that these stands are based on principles. Rush was against the Bush administration on the medicare drug benefit, the immigration bill, and support of McCain/Feingold. He was also in Bill Clinton's corner on NAFTA when many on the right opposed it. The context of his remarks is in the transcript for all to see. The Democrat party have brought this upon themselves now we get to display our IMPEACH OBAMA stickers for the next four years.
  25. our guys were camping this weekend as well at Camp Borain tampa area council's weekend camp. Temps were down in the 30's at night but warmed up nicely during the day.
