  1. I have nothing bad to say about my CO the pastor of the church is married to a woodbadge trained leader. We have only had them for 6 years though before that we had a ok relationship with the CO but one thing I learned is communication is the key. Show up at meetings with the CO and talk about scouting include them in your mailings and talk to them. You might be able to mend some of the broken fences and if not look for another CO and make sure to keep the fences mended
  2. We do the eBay thing as well as the thrift stores but at times it is hard to find the uniforms in the sizes needed. Luckily our troop purchased new uniforms for the troop last year but we still only wear the shirt unless it is a COH or council event where the full uniform is required.
  3. To Uncle Bob Must be nice to live somewhere where everyone can afford to purchase a complete uniform at the prices BSA Charges. Even though we have a uniform exchange and rent uniforms to the boys for a dollar a year not every boy in our troop can afford the whole uniform menaing shirts and pants. Therefore we allow our kids and adults to wear jeans with the shirt. Which is accepted practice in the council I am in. Let's realize that even with the uniform exchange the price of the uniform is out of reach of some people who are struggling just to meet daily neccesities. As for the ori
  4. I to use a air matress on campouts. Even though I have to inflate mine by mouth. I like it and even though I am purchasing a new cot I still plan on using the air matresson top of the cot. Why? I have just been camping and am still paying the penalty with back pain. the reason no air matress to sleep on.
  5. Forgot to add a part to my previous post. "but remember to we have a paramedic as a ASM". He makes sure our first aid kits are up to date and complete as well as any other equipment we might neeed.
  6. Sometimes as Scout Leaders we are ginev medication to adminster to the youth on outings. The reason for this is all the boy's except one is on medication for ADD and other conditions where not giving the medicine could have consequences. We have tried in the past to rely on the Youth taking their medications on time and they always forget that is why the adult leadership has to.
  7. We use the Eurekas and have had no problems with them up until this year the reason for that is we lent them to another group from our CO. and they weren't treated right. We have had ours now for 3 years. The boys use them the adults use cabin tents and a Baker tent for the fact that we need to stand up to get dressed.
  8. I have had the opportunity to serve on a camp planning session for my church and CO. I was amazed at how many times we puled out the GSS to help settle what we were planning for the boy's to do at a summer outing. The reason for this is that alot of the youth coming for this event were Scouts and so Scout policy had to override any other policies. We have discovered that even though we look at the GSS and realize a lot of stuff we did as kids is no longer legal we should look at as a guide to having fun within the rules.
  9. Not a problem Bob White most of our troop committee are also ASMs in our troop. They are registered as troop commitee and meet as such but also help out with the troop. We have discovered this works well especially when time for BOR comes around. The members on the board know the youth and are able to have a better understanding of where the youth is on their path to Eagle.
  10. The duties of the ASM in the troop I'm in are assigned as follows. One is in charge of requirements and paperwork making sure permits are in. Permission has been sought for outings. Medical forms areup to date and the troop trailer gets inventoried. Number two is in charge of transportation and outings making sure we have enough transport to camps and outings and also making sure that the vehicles do pass a BSA safety check. Number three is a certified paramedic so he is charge of first aid for the troop by his choice. He is also our CPR instructor. All of the above are al
  11. Guidons were troop or unit flags and the regiminetal flags were entirely different. The guidons had that indnentation in them and had the regiment number on top in the white and company number below in the red.
  12. And weren't the units called troops in the old calvary? That makes since then. I always thought they looked like guidons
  13. I agree with anyine else remove her immediatley from all check writing. Then notify the police right away. The authorities may be able to get some of the money back from her. We require a monthly audit of our accounts not just by the Troop Committee but by a board of leaders from our CO. They go over our reports and look at them closely and have been known to ask rather pointed questions. Next time create an oversight committee of at least two people and require both signatures on checks.
  14. I must be the oddball here. I was always taught to roll and put in the bag now is that stuffing or folding? We do have large staff wall type tents that we fold and put in the trailer until we get home then they are unfolded and allowed to dry while mounted from the cieling using hooks and ropes.

    Name tags

Name tags Adults defintely yes. Name Tags Youth No. I make it a point to learn everyones name as soon as they start coming as well as their parents names. I haave found that taking the time to remeber their names is a sign that you are intrested in who they are.
  16. How we handle the funds in my troop is alot like a business. We set down in the Troop Committee and PLC meeting and figure out what each unit is going to cost in adavance of the unit. We then draw up a request of funds and turn it in to the treausuer. They thengo over it with a nother person and figure out if it is waranted for the expense. A case in point I turned in a request for 6 - Scout staves for a project. It was turned down after a place where we can get free wood that had to be trimmed was discovered. OIt sounds like another layer of committees but it works. If a item needs purchasin
  17. If I remember my training right. The reason alochol isn't allowed is that in the past many leaders would get drunk on campouts and would not be able to supervise the youth properly. after a few accidents at campouts where youth were unsupervised the policy became no alcohol at all. Just goes to prove that few horrible people do ruin it for everyone else.
  18. Backpack chicken is great to. But you must use a canvas backpack not a nylon one. Take a few flat rocks put them in the fire for a few hours take them out and put them under the wings of the chicken and inside the cavity. Wrap in a wet towel and then wrap in wet newspaper. Carry around all day and by dinner time presto you have a whole chicken ready to eat.
  19. I remember when Wildreness Survival was something all scouts did not just Venture Crews. But an important item is a scout stave or hiking stick Used one for years love it wont go anywhere without it. Second Time I always take is a "space Blanket nice trick to remember to keep warm on a cold night. Third a book on identifying edible plants. Nothing to say how important this is.
  20. Yaworski this fire was started by a boy scout troop the one you are thinking of was in New Mexico. I think this a case of making all Boy Scouts looking bad just because a few leaders didn't bother to impart information to their troops about restrictions on a campground. Now we are all going to pay for a little while. We Carefully check to make sure that ground fires are alowed or we use the stoves to cook. Luckily where we are we have no drought restrictions so most places still allow groundfires and all leaders and scouts must go the Fireman's chit training. WE also keep 2 fore exti
  21. We sold popcorn up until last year. Now we refuse to the reason why is we have never seen our share of the profit. It has become to much of a hassle to sell then collect the money afterwards. We just refuse to sell it. We have enough of other fund raisers that we don't miss the little portion that we are supposed to get.
  22. I may be to late to reply to this but in my district we have the roundtable at the same time for both groups in the same room. We look at roundtable as a coordinating meeting. We can get away with this because we only have one scout troop and three cub packs in the district and a explorer post.
  23. Please remember that your local Salvation Army or other charity may need your help this fall and Christmas season. I know where I live many of the nonprofits are out of money right now when it is needed the most. Even a gift of time helping them would be greatly appreciated.
  24. To answer a Question or Comment I DO READ BOOKS I have a degree in Pastoral Theology and a minor in Counseling. My comment is this when they find a fragment of a skull no bigger than my palm and another bone fragment and claim it is a new hominid they are reaching for something. Most books on Evoultion I have read shows what they think it looked like. Also on another note I will not be posting to this thread after this comment nor reading it. I feel that is discussion is starting to degenerate into a flame war .
