  1. How many sleeping bags do you have to accommodate the range of temperatures that you camp in. I have a 20 degree mummy bag for colder temps that I have experiences (I haven't done much camping below freezing, yet). The 20 deg bag can get warm in milder temps. Do you just regulate with the upper and lower zipper, or do you use a bag that has a higher temp rating? Looking for guidance. Thanks! rj
  2. My Webelos son is getting ready to crossover into a great troop with leaders to match. We have a large percentage of our 2nd year Webelos crossing to the same troop. They asked me to be an ASM, which is what I was hoping for. I worked hard for four years as ACM and CM to build up the program to make it enough fun for my son to continue on to Boy Scouts, where the adventure really begins. Now my wife doesn't want me to take the position. She thinks that my son needs his own time in the troop without his father. She is also concerned that I will be swamped like I was as a CM. Any good a
  3. I agree that he can receive the AOL if he has the other requirements done. No need to wait 6 months after Webelos. We have one 4th grader who hit the '6 months after turning 10' last week, so he will be getting his Webelos & AOL on the same night and then crossing over with the 2nd year Webelos. He turns 11 in August and doesn't want to be an 11 yo Webelos when he can be in Boy Scouts. He has been on a few Webelos campouts, so he is ready.
  4. Those are the requirement I have seen over the years. I was surprised that scouting.org left out wolf and bear.
  5. I was thinking that the Cub Scout World Conservation Award could be earned by Wolf, Bear, and Webelos. When looking on scouting.org, I see the description: Cub Scout World Conservation Award Webelos Scouts can earn the Cub Scout World Conservation Award by earning the Forester, Naturalist, and Outdoorsman activity badges and taking part in a den or pack conservation project. NO mention of Wolf or Bear. When did this change?

    troop visit

Visiting troops with webelos son. Should I dress as Dad or as CM?
  8. Basement, Thank God for people like you to step up as a scout leader, especially with no son in the pack. I'm in the third year as CM and starting to feel stages of burnout due to some lack of involvement by parents. I do get rejuvenated when I do events with the scouts.
  9. Thanks for the feedback. The arrows look good online, and the idea that they are made by native americans sounds good, but knowing that they are sub-standard is good to hear. I think I'll go with arrowoflightawards.com .
  10. Wow, only two months left for the 2nd year Webelos before they get their Arrow Of Light and cross over to a troop. I have been looking around at various ceremony arrows to present. Has anyone used Arrow-of-light-awards.com for the arrows? They seem to be one of the better looking arrows, and the price seems a bit less than others. I would like your opinions. Thanks, RJ
  11. Great comments and advice. I feel that I could fit in either troop as a leader/volunteer (even though my wife thinks that I am done the night of crossover). I think both troops use the boy-led method well, and the older boys did interact with the younger boys and Webelos. I don't think there will be a bad decision. I guess I am just curious as to which troop that I will be able to help at my son's decision. He has wavered back and forth on which troop he prefers. Thanks to everyone for your thoughts!!!
  12. I have seen some posts in the past about larger troops vs smaller troops. I wanted to get a new perspective from the current active members on the scouter forum. We had some of our Webelos attend a camporee with a local troop last month. The troop has about 20 members and looks to be a great troop with good leaders. Being the first troop that most of these boys have visited (prep troop meeting and camporee), most of the Webelos want to join that Troop. This month, we visited with a larger troop (60-70 scouts) at a campout. Of the five Webelos who participated from our Pack, two had a
  13. With our Webelos, some boys like to tent with their Dads, some like to tent with other scouts, and one boy likes to stay in his own tent. My plan was to have Webelos share tents, but we let them do what they want, as long as there is room. Rob
  14. You can have a Pack activity with BB and/or Archery, if you have it at a Council Camp. We had use of the BB pavilion and set up eight BB stations and eight Archery stations. You do have to have certified Range Officers (we had one of each, plus I am certified for both). The Council might help you to find one, if you don't have one in your Pack, but it is best to have your own. I have also run a shooting event for other Packs, at the request of the Head Ranger for camp. This does not mean that I can setup a range on my yard (plenty of room)nor at some other campground to have my scouts sho
  15. The rockets were a HUGE hit. Many of the boys want to do rockets with their Dad, now. None of the local hobby stores that I had checked had any bulk kits. I turned out ordering from scoutstuff.org, so the $$ did go to BSA Supply. Thanks for all responses.
  16. Scoutstuff.org has, by far, the best pricing for the Bulk Pack for Wizard and Viking Rockets, and engine packs. MSRP online scoutstuff Viking 61.99 41.54 27.88 Wizard 73.99 49.58 34.88 Engines 63.29 42.41 29.88 got the Wizard 12 and Blast Off Flight Pack and paid appox $15 for tax and shipping. Great Deal!!!
  17. Thanks for the great suggestions. I'll check them all out.
  18. ScoutNut, Thanks for your reply. I did find some online hobby stores with some good prices for low level rockets. I was hoping to get a recommendation about a site that I can trust. I would hate to pick one that isn't trustworthy.
  19. We are having a Webelos Campout in May. We thought about doing Estes Rockets. Has anyone had any good luck with ordering Bulk Rocket Kits and engines from any specific source?
  20. I asked the Camping Director of our Council if our Fall Cub-O-Ree (5pm - Noon following day) would qualify as a Cub Resident Camp. The one-night Fun With Son does count (5pm - 3pm on following day). I was told that it would not. The best way to find out is to check with your Council. It seems like a drive to get more boys active in the Summer Camp programs. Tigers can get the Outdoor Activity Award by joining during Spring Recruiting and going to a Summer Day Camp. We are told that this is supposed to be one of the enticements of Spring Recruitment. I can't say that I agree wit
  21. Scoutfish, Basementdweller has it right.... outdoors and camping. Den camping, Council Webelos Camping, Boy Scout Camping to show Webelos about the troop. It is good to move a lot of Den Meetings outside, too. Boys get tired of being in a classroom too much. You can have some Den Hikes and every so often, go over certain aspects of an Activity Award during a break. See if you can get a Boy Scout, or more, to help with some of your activities. Let them see that Boy Scouts is not an extension of Cub Scouts. Having Boy Scouts around will help to show that. Give the boys more
  22. I think the paintball in BL was shooting at targets, not at each other. Wouldn't it be strange if full paintball is allowed, but Lazer Tag isn't.
  23. PM is a much nicer looking program. I liked using it when we had it. Our Achievement Chair was asked to present PM at Roundtable to compare various tracking options. Another Pack presented ScoutTrack. The Achievement Chair decided that he would like to switch to ScoutTrack. It wasn't as nice looking, but the functionality seemed to fit our need much better. We have been happy with ScoutTrack for the 2nd year.
  24. Basement, The updated info for Dan Beard Cub Scout Summer camp is online now: http://danbeard.org/Camping_Cub.Aspx The resident camp sessions offered this summer are: Adventure Camp 1: June 21 24 Adventure Camp 2: June 28 July 1 Adventure Camp 3: July 26 29 Adventure Camp 4: August 2 4
  25. Overplan the campout... have LOTS of activities and the equipment to do these activities. Don't expect that all activities will be done. Go with the flow. Sometimes the boys find something that they would like to be doing for longer than the 'planned' time. Have things ready for when they grow tired of the activity at hand. Put your ideas in a notebook so you can re-use the good activities and skip the ones that didn't go over with the boys. And DO have enough free time for them to just run in the fields or explore the woods (along the trails).
