    Condom Distribution at World Jamboree

I wonder if the Olympics analogy extends to being a money loser for the host(s)? Boston was the USOC preferred site for the 2024 Summer Olympics. The International Olympic Committee requirements for facilities, infrastructure (We can't get the MBTA to run), security, etc. would have required Massachusetts taxpayers to fork over millions. Recall Romney got federal money for Utah Winter Olympics, going back to that well was not happening after the Big Dig cost overruns. In the end, the taxpayers said No Thanks. How much revenue will go to hosts, BSA, and Summit and will that revenue cover our costs? My $0.02,
  3. Update May 24, 2018: Final arguments in the multiyear dispute over ownership of the Camp Richard Scout camp wrapped up in Barnstable Superior court Tuesday, with a decision on who owns the island property expected to be handed down by the end of June, when the presiding judge is set to retire. The debate stems from the Cape & Islands Council of the Boy Scouts of America’s agreement four years ago to sell a portion of the property to Hingham-based Atlantic Development for $5 million, and efforts by local scouting groups – backed by the Nantucket Civic League (former owner of the property) and the Nantucket Land Council – to bar thesale. Last year, Superior Court Judge Gary Nickerson ruled that Camp Richard should forever remain a “campsite for the scouts of Nantucket,” and must be transferred back to the Civic League if used for any other purpose. He also determined – without any evidentiary hearings – that ownership of the property was to remain in a trust controlled by the off-island council, in part because it was affiliated with the national Boy Scouts of America and the Camp Richard Campers Association, the local organization, was not. http://www.ack.net/news/20180524/ownership-decision-of-camp-richard-due-end-of-june
  4. Many New England scout troops schedule a Nantucket bike trip, for some it is an annual trip. Take the ferry, rent or take bikes, bike around island, go to the beach, and thriftily tent at Camp Richard, a 100 acre scout camp gifted to the island Boy Scouts in the early 1970s by the Nantucket Civic League "Cape Cod & Islands Council received a $3.5 million offer from Atlantic Development to purchase 30 acres within Camp Richard, according to Bob Graves, the president of the Nantucket District Committee of the Boy Scouts of America." Local scout leaders (Nantucket District Committee) are attempting to block to sale by transferring deed ownership to Camp Richard Campers Association Barnstable Superior Court judge Gary Nickerson is hearing the lawsuit filed by Council against scout leaders trying to block the sale of part of Camp Richards. In Mass, deed restrictions expire in 30 years unless reinstated. "The deed transfer from the Nantucket District Committee to the Camp Richard Campers Association sought to reinstate the restriction." http://www.ack.net/JudgedeniesLandCo...ment081313.htm

    Condom Distribution at World Jamboree

As odd as it might sound, anyone can buy condoms in West Virginia. "Condoms are not a drug, just a physical health product just like Band-Aids and cotton balls so they are not regulated like the pill or other birth control that changes your body chemistry. Mike Rowe: Death of Boy Scouts?

...If the Boy Scouts want to attract a new generation of members, they’ll need to stand for something more than inclusion. Because being inclusive doesn’t make you relevant. If I were calling the shots, I’d take a stand against the safe space movement and everything it embodies. And I’d do it in the most public way possible. But of course, that might also require a level of risk completely inconsistent with current orthodoxy. As we all know, in 1974, a chipped tooth or a black eye didn’t lead to lawsuit, and today, I’m pretty sure a boxing ring and a trip to the shooting range would make a lot of parents…uncomfortable. But that’s exactly the point. In a world that values safety above everything else, discomfort is never welcome. Neither is risk. And yet, discomfort and risk are precisely why my time in Scouting was so valuable, and why Troop 16 was the polar opposite of a safe space. Anyway Sharon, that’s a very long way of saying that girls are not the enemy. The enemy is bad ideology, and the inability to effectively confront it. Do I favor co-ed Scouting? Hell no. I can’t think of a single good reason to put girls and boys in the same troop, the same tent, the same boxing ring, or the same game of British Bulldog. But I can think of many good reasons to include them in a unified effort to confront the siren song of “safe spaces.” Someone has to challenge the insipid belief that safety is the most important part of living. Someone has to challenge the idea that feelings trump achievement. Someone has to challenge the idea that “crying closets” on campuses designed to console stressed out students who just can’t handle their finals exams, (or the outcome of a presidential election,) will produce a responsible, productive adult. ... I recommend reading the whole article complete with colorful language. http://mikerowe.com/2018/05/otw-death-of-the-boy-scouts/

    Be prepared - confused...

A response to above link. Note in this response, Vice Chairperson of the World Scout Committee Andy Chapman is American. What remains unanswered is how the hosts Scouts Canada, the Scout Association of Mexico, and the Boy Scouts of America will implement the requirements. Will it be by hosts, nations, units,...? How will parents be notified (this was news to me!)? https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/boy-scouts-condoms-jamboree/ And a link to WOSM Guidelines for Hosting World Jamborees Original topic is still under moderator review. Please keep discussion professional and respectful. Thank you.

Mike Rowe: Death of Boy Scouts?

Let's get back in the USA and with more thoughtful, relevant responses to Mike Rowe's comments. The enemy is bad (BSA) ideology, and the inability to effectively confront it. 16. “After a careful review of the program and its contents, including its mission statement, curriculum, pedagogical structure, letters of Ecclesiastical approval, and statement of mission that faithfully reflects and adheres to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church, the Troops of Saint George is hereby approved as a Catholic Apostolate of the Diocese of Fort Worth,” the Most Reverend Michael F. Olsen, Bishop of the Diocese of Fort Worth, Texas wrote in a letter, dated May 16, 2018. http://www.patheos.com/blogs/deaconsbench/2018/05/bishop-approves-alternative-to-boy-scouts-as-a-catholic-apostolate/ Looking at the Diocese website, the Bishop's decision does not appear to remove Boy Scouts as an endorsed youth program. Trail Life is not mentioned. Also there appears to be only one Troop of St. George in the Fort Worth Diocese. https://fwdioc.org/scouting Troops of St. George

  21. The feedback I am getting from our Eagle candidates is the Eagle project is enough...only do not mention your service work on a college application as an Eagle project just let the college assume it was part of service requirement for graduation! We need to get the value of Eagle back and it is not PR stating only 4%,5%,...,%8 earn Eagle, which says what exactly? Make Eagle of unquestioned value again post high school. For example, not E-2 maybe E-3 grade , definite E-3 grade across the service branches. This would mean more physically fit and more real (solo) leadership. Colleges want to see service, let's focus on service and not STEM which schools are better suited. Maybe pre-college Eagle weeks at colleges during summer? But mostly, the BSA should be talking to college admissions and military recruiters regarding what would make Eagles more valuable to them. I remember "back in the day" when Eagle and Girl Scout Gold was a checkbox on many college applications, but today? Recover the value loss, recover the pride. My $0.02,
  22. It will be interesting to see if LDS re-purposes their existing BSA uniforms towards their new youth program. If not, imagine the economic impact to the BSA with all us thrifty scouts buying pre-owned LDS uniforms.
