  1. Guys from Joisey were spreading nationwide confusion long before the internet. As a yute, I remember hearing on the radio that the Martians had landed at Grover's Mill, NJ. Seemed to happen every Oct 30. Scary, but we were more worried about Communists back in the day. As a joke, my father had me listen to this "true story" about a boy scout in Springfield who unwittingly joined a communist high school club the Pioneers. I googled and found it was actually Episode 3 The Pledge which was part of the If Freedom Failed, a syndicated radio show produced by The Armed Forces Radio and Televisi
  2. http://usscouts.org/eagle/eagleastronauts.asp So far, the same number of Second Class scouts walked on the Moon as Eagles did. Eagle Scouts: Neil Armstrong (Apollo 11) and Charles Duke (Apollo 16) Life Scouts: Edgar Mitchell (Apollo 14) and David Scott (Apollo 15) First Class Scouts: Alan Bean (Apollo 12) and Alan Shepard (Apollo 14) Second Class Scouts: John Young (Apollo 16) and Eugene Cernan (Apollo 17) Tenderfoot Scouts: Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin (Apollo 11) and Harrison Schmitt (Apollo 17) Cub Scouts: Charles "Pete" Conrad (Apollo 12)
  3. Let's take it down a notch. All depends on context. Tenderfoot and Second Class may sound derogatory and First Class and Star elitist, but in the general Scouting context, that is not the case. They are just names. Could they be used in a not courteous way, yes. In the end, it is the perception of the person who is being called that name that matters. If someone called me a paper Eagle, I would not like it.
  4. The Eagle "service project" requirement was not added until 1965. Before then, merit badge work. From 1958 to 1965,sixteen of the 21 were of the required category. In my experience back then, Eagle service projects were mostly solo efforts - a scout's own labor. The scout already had experience planning and leading patrol and troop service projects. NO GSS (OMG I used ladders and power tools). No workbooks, no Eagle advisors beyond SM. http://www.troop97.net/bsaeagle.htm
  5. Update: March 16, Found guilty in criminal case and now the civil case. Fast forward to March 2017. It's been about 10 months since Kelsey was found guilty of first-degree sexual abuse and first-degree attempted sexual abuse, both felonies, along with forcible touching and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, all misdemeanors. Kelsey, 38, is serving his seven year prison sentence (plus a decade of post-release supervision). And the families of the two teens young men who both testified, during the trial, that they had trusted and looked up to Kelsey, which made his actio
  6. Since I was OP, a summary so far. - international scouting groups may have concerns about entering the US - whether certain members will be denied entrance or treated in a less than friendly manner based on religion or national origin. Should the State Dept respond to these concerns? - these scouting groups might pass on US trips, including World Jambo 2019. - traveling with electronics (laptops, lithium-ion batteries, cameras,..) internationally is becoming more problematic. Maybe this is a friendship opportunity for Jambo hosts or US scouts to share smartphones and laptops?
  7. Like David CO, our scouts are not the popular, cool kids that win school elections, nor are they school politics savvy. Our scouts have lead robotics teams, chess clubs,...
  8. We're old school. Scout is responsible for keeping track of his advancement in his handbook. He loses handbook, he has to work the problem just as he does when he loses his homework. We have had a few scouts lose their handbooks, but they don't do it twice. They do learn to keep their blue cards. We continue to believe this is an important life lesson - that a kid should learn to keep his own records whether its an exercise plan, bank account, schoolwork, scout handbook... PL is responsible for knowing what his guys need to advance and brings that info to PLC for meeting and activit
  9. I remember a cheap Casio watch was banned a while ago as it could be easily hacked into a time detonator.
  10. Wouldn't that be something, if the things we didn't have (laptops, cellphones, dvd players) in the 60's when we crossed borders we again don't have 50 years later.
  11. The US is banning laptops and other electronic devices on inbound flights from some countries. The UK has now joined the ban and Canada is considering it. The concern is that these devices could be weaponized.
  12. Most boys leave scouting before that and even more never reach Eagle, so I would worry about that if and when it happens. As SM, I would be doing my best to do right by the scout and keep him interested in scouting especially after after two sports programs. Hopefully, he will earn his First Class before some "adults" change the requirements again. My $0.02
  13. Bring it up in his BOR and move on with the Scouting program. Summer camp will be here before you know it.
  14. Maybe add a requirement to Citizenship in Nation or World regarding border crossing procedures, both US and foreign. IMHO, add requirement to Nation right after requirement #4 4. Discuss each of the following documents with your counselor. Tell your counselor how you feel life in the United States might be different without each one. a. Declaration of Independence b. Preamble to the Constitution c. The Constitution d. Bill of Rights e. Amendments to the Constitution What happens when old Schiff returns to US wearing his old Argus 35mm camera, does BCP seiz
  15. I was more a Question Authority than Follow Akela scout. IMO, Intelligent and Aware should be there.
  16. Not at the US border or within x miles of it, but everywhere else in US, yes I think.
  17. Yes, Girl Guides is not part of Scouts Canada. Scouts Canada is coed.
  18. The 36th Annual Hands Across the Border will be held in Canada at Camp Stone, near Kimberley British Columbia, September 29-Oct 1, 2017. This is the first time in several years the event will be held in Canada. This is very exciting news and I believe those units going will have a great experience. ... the camp’s location is a 5-hour drive from Missoula, not taking into account border crossing time. How much time would/should border crossing time take? 2hours, 4hours, more? With cellphones and social media accounts being examined without a warrant at US border, what what be your elect
  19. IMO, the ideal CO was one which had a gym for our meeting place. As a scout, my troop met in a gym which was part of a Presbyterian school. Those were the days my friend.
  20. Could have been just my Council back then. Our local Republican Club tried to charter a Boy Scout troop and was turned down for that reason. Some thought it was politics as it was '68 and candidate Nixon was coming to town. Catholic churches chartered through their parochial school where their units also met, not the Knights of Columbus. Back then, there were plenty of schools and churches, where the boys were, seeking charters. Times change.
  21. Indignant or responsible or moral or smart choice? Some parents have no alcohol in their homes. I don't. Back in the day (here he goes), my old Council would not charter organizations which had/served alcohol on their premises. There was no shortage of public schools and churches willing to sponsor BSA units. I think the BSA will adopt the Scouting Association stand on alcohol (link below) and as soon as we hear beer being served at Summit for whatever the activity, scouting or not, there will be beer at scout camps. https://members.scouts.org.uk/supportresources/1862/alcohol-and-
  22. It is server side js, please inform Terry homepage references window.IPBoard as Col. Flag mentioned. view-source:http://scouter.com/public/style_images/bulletin/ips.mcr.js
  23. On Firefox, I use the default appearance and have seen this popup.
  24. http://www.wallaceburgcourierpress.com/2017/03/15/lambton-event-not-expected-to-end-with-girl-guide-canada-policy-change A decision by Girl Guides Canada to stop granting approval for trips to the U.S. isn't expected to end a five-decade-old annual cross-border event in Sarnia-Lambton. This year's 50th anniversary of the Girl Guides and Girl Scouts International River Crossing is set for Sept. 30 in Sombra, on the Canadian side of the river, and a park on the Michigan side. Girl Guide groups, from Sparks to Rangers, hold special events during the day of the event, and participants
