    Update On Adult Leadership Standards

I wish I could predict what my grandsons will do. They're not old enough yet for cubs. But I recognize that with all the different alternatives out there, they and their parents will make the best decision they can for their own interests. I will support whatever they decide, but there is no way that I'm going to intrude on that decision. I will only offer my support however they decide.

    Scouting Builds Leaders And Doers

I'll be on the trail on Tuesday. Just a segment. There was a time that I would blast through everything. Today, I like to experience everything, just sit once in a while and listen and watch everything around me and enjoy the experience. It takes forever to get there but it isn't a race anymore. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Hedgehog, it pains me to inform you that if they DO issue such an invitation, my personal experience is that they also might do that in order to show you how OLD you are..."What, we have to wait for HIM again?" LOL, if this happens, just play along and enjoy the stroll.

    Update On Adult Leadership Standards

I took a 6-week, around-the-continent camping trip with my daughter. We shared the tent. She was 18yo. The only problem was my snoring and an occasional banana slug intruder in the Pacific NW. Scouter99, you linked to a previous thread about a 'touching' incident. I point out that the touching was by another boy and there was no information about the contact itself nor its context. We basically don't know much about that incident.

Neckerchief Other Than With The Uniform

Stosh, That's what this unit does too. If the patrols want to they can 'customize' with a design. I have a really nice mug. It says, "Don't let the turkeys get you down" and has a cartoon of a turkey. Got it one Thanksgiving. Moggie, that is a great photo. It says it all, what a great-looking group! SSScout, a tool is the way I remember it too. That's why we rejected the small triangle and went with homemade...so they can actually be used for all sorts of things. You can actually use one to immobilize a sprained ankle for example. I still have some of the old triangles, though. Maybe in 100 years I can make some money on eBay, lol.

Thinking error lesson: I have not (and I'm fairly certain that NJ hasn't either) made any such assertion in the first place. You falsely claimed that we did.

So without an activist court we'd be without those rights, right?

Thanks, I missed that part. I can use this as an example of how NOT to create answers to questions.

    Update On Adult Leadership Standards

I did a search on the words, "freedom to associate" and "freedom of association" and couldn't find those in the Bill of Rights. Am I missing something? Also, "Right to privacy". Must be in there somewhere.

    The Entitlement Generation

The best way to learn from failure is to learn from someone else's failure, lol. But many of us don't seem to choose that path.

    Update On Adult Leadership Standards

David, as I understood these things, and I could be wrong, all of the freedoms are freedoms for individuals first...groups in the respect that individuals form them. NJ can probably provide the needed clarification if any.

"We"? Only a very few of "us" seem to be completely consumed and obsessed with things sexual in these forums. I will be very happy to delete any and all such discussion in the future. Is that what you advocate?

    Update On Adult Leadership Standards

If my memory serves me, I have only ever removed one photo. It was the same one that NJ removed within the last 24 hours... but was re-posted by the same forum member in a later response. READ my note.

    Update On Adult Leadership Standards

Cambridgeskip, I only just read it and it might have been an easy decision if there hadn't already been several responses (which would mean a cascading effect of editing, etc. which could just end up causing confusion - voice of experience here). I could invite you to read other statements that I've had to read in this I&P forum and you would understand that it isn't actually the most ignorant and offensive thing available...it's just the one that you read. I admit that I'm uncertain, short of just deleting things wholesale, how to keep a forum like this one 'moderate'. It seems to naturally spawn the sort of thing to which you've just reacted. And since I'm in a profession that values open exchange of ideas, no matter how ignorant and offensive, I try to err on the side of permissiveness. My personal approach to things like this forum and for that matter to those individuals who insist on standing in public place to spew this onto students and the public, is to let them stand and be the example of ignorance and offensiveness that they are. It isn't pleasant but in a sort of way, it IS instructive. So that's the approach I try to take here in the I&P forum. To the other moderators, please feel free to jump in on this.

    New To The Forum

Welcome to the forums! They can be fun and they can be informative. And once in a while they can be irritating, lol. A sense of humor helps...probably with the unit as well, lol. Like I just wrote, Welcome!

    Resistant To Common Sense?

I'm sympathetic to Scoutldr's sensitivity to this topic. When I was a child, I suffered probably 3 or 4 blistering sunburns every summer all the way to my teen years. I suspect that it's just been a matter of luck now, at my age, that I don't have skin cancer already but I know I'm at risk. Back then sunscreen didn't really exist and my parents thought I just needed to get a tan (impossible with my complexion but they didn't know that). But that experience was literally burned into my memory and I make sure that when I'm in the tropics, or even outdoors here in the South, I and my students take careful precautions. That said, I can't force them to use good sense or to take my advice. But after that first burn, they usually 'come around' to my way of thinking...almost obsessively. Why anyone would voluntarily repeat that burn is beyond my comprehension.
