  1. So if we keep doing the callout the way we have been, with drums, feathers, and such, what is national going to do arrest us? I have told "uniform police" to go take a flying leap more than once. I don't think I'll have a problem with "regalia police" Sst3rd, quit if you must, I walked away in disgust once, it was about 20 years before I came back. But please rethink the bonfire. As another scout who has spent hundreds of hours sewing and beading and gluing fluffys onto feathers, I understand the anger. Believe me I do. Give it a couple of weeks. If you still feel the same way you can
  2. Well Col Flagg, on the other side of the coin it would be helpful if my council didn't hold Woodbadge on the same weekend as the Ordeals. I haven't kept a careful record but I think they have conflicted 4 of the last 7 times. Now I like woodbadgers. A lot. They are some of the best scouters I know. But it's hard to run a good Ordeal when your go to guys are off being a "critter" or staffing. As to the " vow of silence" I am just a bit confused by how it would help. My chapter leaders, chief, ordeal master, ceremonies head, lead cook, etc. are running an event for 150 or so people.
  3. I suspect the SM really isn't an ass, he just does not understand the importance of the spiritual dimension in this. It's something that can't be explained very well if at all. You have to have lived it Or at the very least seen the difference it makes in someone who is very close to you. just my $0.03 (dues have gone up) Oldscout
  4. As a Scouter who has had many a scout I was counting on pull out at the last minute, for a date,a track meet, a game of D&D... I can understand the SM being frustrated. But this seems to be a very different situation indeed. Is he aware of your wifes condition? As my friend SSScout has noted the Duty to God and family is far more important than any duty to his troopmates. If it does come to a vote I strongly suspect they will understand, The scouts in my sons troop did when my wife was gravely ill. As did every scouter I spoke to when I told them I needed to step back from scout
  5. On the subject of the Mars Orbiter did we measure the crater it made on impact in meters or feet?
  6. Nope, not in the BSA rulebook. That said as an RSO I have discouraged a few smaller scouts ( read just crossed over) from signing up to fire a 12 or 20 gauge repeatedly. Even with light trap loads their muscles just can't take the pounding. They start to flinch, which means they start to miss, which means more shooting to qualify. But if they really want to I have never told them no. Oldscout
  7. Have they paid any attention to the other surveys they sent out? Nope
  8. How does one get this survey? Is it on request or does national send it out randomly ?
  9. Our chapter had three scouts who were deemed worthy of the vigil honor last June, I think that's a record for us. I have known them all for years and have watched them serve and serve and serve some more. But one of them was moving out of state before our lodge held its vigil ceremonies. So we managed to get special permission to hold a one man ceremony just for him. We had very little time and a fair number of us were at the Jambo so I was asked if I could serve in this young mans ceremony. I will not say how here, suffice to say that I wore no feathers. But that was an honour and
  10. This might not come up at all but... I have a scout in my troop who took forever with his eagle project, passed his Eagle board a week before he turned 18. But he had earned 27 merit badges. If he comes asking " How come the scouts who eagle next month with extra badges get to wear palms and I don't?" I really really don't know how to answer him. Part of me says Well those were the rules at the time. Unfair or not the rules were the rules. The other part says Just hand the young man a bronze palm and tell him its up to him to wear it or not. Oldscout
  11. Hi Josh, pull up a log and don't be shy. The old goat patrol sometimes needs a 19 year old viewpoint. Oldscout
  12. Maybe and maybe not . The wind in Texas can be fearsome at times.
  13. A scout from Jefferson MD fell while rock climbing at Philmont a few days ago. Dont know how badly he was hurt, but our district facebook asked everyone for prayers, so that does not sound like a minor injury
  14. I have gotten the same lecture for having the scouts sing a little song to reclaim their lost items when camping. None of the scouts ever seemed to mind. In fact they just love it when they can catch me leaving something behind! Then it's " Oh Mr. Ooooldscout! I wanna hear ' I'm a little teapot'" and I look up and the whole troop is standing there grinning and little Tommy Tenderfoot is holding my candle lantern. So I sing and we all laugh, and I get my lantern back. Again
  15. Ahh smoke shifters ! I was sent for a left handed model. But was told it was needed to cook the Snipes we would catch later that night. We rarely used the wall tents, mostly it was pups, campers, and overnighters. All of which needed a number of guy lines which was always bailing twine. So the great thing, if it wasn't raining, was to wait until the other troop/ patrol was fast asleep and then sneak up on their tent and carefully scrape the twine with a knife blade thinner and thinner until only a few strands remained. Then creep back to your own tent and wait for the next puff of
  16. I'll be there, thanks for the info. Old scout
  17. Artem Ziberov, an eagle scout of troop 489 of Germantown MD was found shot to death while sitting in a car with his friend Shadi Najjar in a normally peaceful court last night. The police report said at least 22 shots were fired. Both young men were to have graduated today. This took place less than two miles from where I work.
  18. Darn it ! now i am missing going to camp. Cold showers, 100+ degree heat, followed by thunderstorms, pancakes so hard we could have used 'em to shingle the dining hall, I still miss it
  19. When I was a scout, back in the days of cotton uniforms, my SM was an army Captain. He was the one who hated wrinkles. If we didnt look better than any of the other troops in camp, it could ( and did) get ugly! I learned to lash together a hanger, but this is advice for a firsty
  20. battery powered fan and some rechargeable D cells. helps a lot in hot stuffy tents. an extra scout shirt and a hanger Gatorade mix Some snacks to share with his patrol
  21. The council camp is a four plus hour drive, kinda hard to get there at a reasonable hour on Friday night.
  22. Yup, Scoutson #1 switched when his first troop had an older bully in a scout uniform who loved punching little scouts and the adults refused to do anything about it. Cost me one buck. Within a month scoutson was " one of the gang" I think the turning point was when he offered to help wash the dinner dishes even though it was not his job. Scoutson #4 also transfered when his SM refused to let the troop hold OA elections. ( there is a long thread on this in the OA section ) Again everything turned out well, Both eagled and made a lot of new friends. I hope M. Javert is not
  23. "Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages" Saw it just last week after 50 some years. The pollen count must have been real high, I had to keep wipin my eyes
