  2. Oh aye, a few. my mother ran the GS summer day camp in our district for about 15 years. Most of the staff found in easier to camp out for those two weeks than drive back and forth from home twice a day. In the beginning I got dragged along so that she could keep an eye on me. As I moved into my early teens I discovered that girls were not as yucky as they had been when I was younger. When I was 16, a 15 year old girl came to camp with the most amazing blue eyes I had ever seen. Remember the word "twitterpated" from Bambi? A few of the younger scouts in my troop tried to make a jo
  3. Beware of teasing an old dog, he may have one good bite left.
  4. Buggie, As a dad I'm glad your son had a "time to stand up for myself " moment, and passed it with flying colors. We all have them at some point in our lives. As a ceremonies advisor, I'm just livid. If my vice chief of ceremonies did that to a member of the team he would be fired at the next team meeting. I would want to do it but the scouts would beat me to it. Of that I have no doubt. In fact the only question in my mind is if he would be even allowed to stay on the team at all.
  5. " Ifin I doesnt laugh, I sure tinks Iz gonna cry" line from an old cowboy in a Louis L'amour novel seems to fit right now
  6. Hi Laxpir21, and welcome ! That is a problem that has plagued the Order pretty much everywhere. Back when I was elected in '74 the older scouts with cars would often pick up their younger troopmates for meetings, tapouts and the like. No longer allowed. I guess its safer but it puts more of a burden on the adults for sure. We have somewhat solved it by holding the chapter meeting at the same time as roundtable. since the scoutmasters are theoretically going there anyway.
  7. I just might . We have a 26" diameter boomer. As well as a hand drum. I threw this question up because there are a couple of nearby chapters who asked for some help and when I asked if they wanted the drum and a drummer they both said ' No we dont have or want a drum.' Just struck me as odd because it adds so much to our ceremonies,
  8. So does anyone else use a drum or a flute in the ceremonies?
  9. and a well armed sheep contesting the vote. Ben Franklin
  10. Do the best you can, with what you've got, where you're at. Teddy Roosevelt
  11. ummmm No I do remember the only place I or anyone in the district, well maybe the DE,heard that the surveys even existed was right here.
  12. yup, in the Great Screw Up of '72 Bet I still have a shirt with that on it somewhere in the attic
  13. Again just a few changes Three hour soup = cold chicken over a tiny sterno can. Gills = Chip , the scout who rolled over in his sleep so much you often found him 30 feet from the tent in the morning Joey= Billy, who never used a sleeping bag just an old wool army blanket and I was there too! BTW green wood will burn if you have enough bug spray, but in a shelter you need to be able to hold your breath for quite a long time.
  14. I think this is the point where we differ. As a scouter hold that I am charged to deliver, to the best of my poor ability, the scouting program to the scouts. Not the schools program, or the churches program, if the boys want that then they can go there and I will ( and have ) happily teach them in that venue. Why should I give in when I know I am right? "higher authority" or not? How is that serving the scouts? What in the end would I be teaching them by my example? That you should just meekly submit to every rule by some person in " authority" no matter how arbitrary or capri
  15. I have read this thrice, but I am still not sure I understand what exactly you are saying. Are we talking about a teacher/parent in a classroom setting? Or in the school gym where the scouts meet? Or camping on land owned by the Scouter? In the first two it is a given that the teacher should and does have authority. Although they should interact with the SM. rather than directly with the scouts if possible. In the latter I do not perceive how a teacher would have any more authority than any other parent. In this we are in complete agreement. Well said
  16. In the school lobby of course the teacher has authority, in the park the ranger does. It's a matter of the position the person holds and the corresponding location. Outside of their specific area they are just another citizen. As a scouter it seems my main function while camping with the troop is preventing helicopter parents from interfering with the patrol leaders who are trying to lead. That is after all one of the main things they are supposed to learn in scouting, right? It's an old saying ,I think you will find it in Machiavelli, that you never publicly undercut a subordina
  17. Still recovering from the Ordeal. Tired, sore but smiling. I just watched a young Arrowman drape a brotherhood sash over his fathers shoulder just a few hours after he gave his younger brother an ordeal sash. His older brother, who was the head elongomat for the weekend, was standing nearby watching and smiling. That should keep me going for a while.
  18. In another thread there was a question of adult authority from one unit, a cub pack, spilling over into a scout troop if both had the same C.O. One of our posters when asked to show where this was written B.S.A. policy, replied that if it was the C.O.s policy then the official B.S.A. rules and regs. were superseded. I did not know that was possible. If it is then it begs the question, how far can the C.O. rules differ from scoutings before you can no longer in truth call their youth group a scout troop?
