  1. Sounds like every scout I've worked with, disability or not.
  2. @@Hedgehog I'm not sure about family trips to be honest. The section quoted above comes straight from the same source. I take that to mean that the scout can do these events by himself, with friends or with a family member provided they are done specifically for the MB. The wording seemed to directly preclude "family" events. It would be interesting to get BSA's definition on family events. Most families don't hike or backpack but I could see an MBC giving credit for a scout where families did do that. I suspect BSA is trying to avoid scouts taking credit for the impromptu family hike tha
  3. So bought the system above. Son had the next gen system $30 more than the one above. For the record that's $150+ worth of filter systems. Second use, the things clogged...both of them. Not in the water system but the hand pump. One pump handle broke (on the more expensive system). The systems' hand pump needed to have an o-ring lubbed every use. Ridiculous!! Worked great the one time (first time) we used it. After that it was a disaster. Contacting the company to return or replace the product. I would totally steer clear of the Katadyn systems. They are worthless. You'd be better off using
  4. Assuming the trek plans are done before the trek and all the elements are accounted for, and the trek log updated after the trek, sure. But the events would need to be done specifically for the various badges or awards and NOT family things.
  5. In Cubs or Boy Scout units where leadership transition and fiduciary responsibility may be in question, I can see a rainy day fund being appropriate. $25k though seems exorbitant.
  6. I suspect @@Stosh is not merely sitting by and letting his boys run the whole show without some pearls of wisdom and guidance being dropped in their path to guide their decision a bit.
  7. Hmmm, maybe those opposing the policy should have told those supporting it to "shut up and leave". Did not hear much of that happen, did we?
  8. Intent and BSA are seldom found in the same sentence. Whether by happenstance or intent, BSA is obtuse.
  9. We have winner!! That's the point. If BSA means your god (assuming not God), my god, Rick's rock, NJScouter's tree and whatever else on Vishnu's Green Earth they want to recognize as a "higher power", then simply say so. I'm fine with that actually. But to say "Duty to God" and try to water it down to mean god, or something else is silly. Say god or higher power or [insert your religion here] if they want to truly be inclusive without (BSA) being obtuse.
  10. That's until the history books get re-written, again.
  11. In our unit our adults are very like minded. We recruited them that way. We are honest and tell the parents that if they don't like stepping and rolling up their sleeves, theirs 3-4 baby-sitting units down the road. Every once in a while we get someone who slips through that discussion and just sits on the sidelines. Our SM or TC will contact them, ask them to take over something and discuss how they can help. If they pass, their asked to head up another thing. If they pass on that on that they ask "What can you do to help the unit?". If the reply is "I'm really busy and don't have time" and t
  12. My understanding is that our district wants to report total service hours and eagle project service hours up the food chain.
  13. We do two camp outs on different weekends. Older scouts attend both. Younger scouts just one. Splitting on th same weekend will lead to an unwanted segmenting of scouts. The older scouts should be leading and teaching the younger ones. We had to take four years to fix our troop a long while back when one of our SMs did just what you propose. Two years of doing that caused four years work to fix it back.
  14. If they use the word with a big G then it's God and not god. Means two different things.
  15. The best I have seen are in Texas. Their state parks are great. Flush toidies, showers, water and electric in 90% of their sites. The primitive sites are more like you say.
  16. I was asked the other day if "crowd-funding" sites were allowed by BSA. Calls and inquiries to our DE have gone without a reply (big surprise there, not). I did find this blog from 2014 which seems to give BSA's take on crowd funding. Has anyone had any experience on using such sites as kickstarter.com or donationto.com? What was your response rate or how close did you come to your goal? How much did the site take? I saw gofundme.com takes nearly 8% on every $100. Anyone find a better site that has similar exposure but takes less of the donations?
  17. We are one of those units that collects pre-payments for high adventure bases, summer camp and other such things. We maintain a very hefty balance (over 10k) and track it well. We know who has paid what and how much is due or due back. Scouts get a monthly update on their "account".
  18. Article 11 on page 17 seems to gloss over that and go directly to "funds" and who controls them. Given most districts can't even send a UC regularly to a unit, I suspect a unit could liquidate their monies and gear before anyone at the district level would even know there's an issue.
  19. Look, it's the English language and it's pretty clear. The word God refers to THE God of the Christians, Jews and Muslims. The word god refers to any other deity other groups see as their supreme beings. If BSA just meant any old god they would have used the lower case version. Forget the word God. Let's take the word "not". When the BSA says we "shall not" do something, are we allowed to interpret what they mean by "not"? Is it a suggestion? A word has a definition. Some have many definitions. But when you capitalize something it is a proper noun and means a specific thing. The Super Bowl
  20. I guess in my neck of the woods it is not that much an issue. Here, red or blue, there are three things you'll have to pry out of our cold, dead hands are our Bibles (or Torrah or Koran), our US flag and our guns. We are those simple folks everyone makes fun of.
  21. I heard that our local LDS that houses the district is going to kick them out.
  22. Any comments on the Jackery line? Which might be best to recharging a phone in the backcountry? I can usually get my pack pretty light so weight is not that big a deal. Curious if anyone has knowledge of the various types here.
  23. I'm saying what I said. It was pretty clear. I will repeat. If BSA did not mean the God of Jews, Christians and Muslims, then they should not have used the capitalized word God. If they meant just any old god or notion of a higher being not God, then they should use the lower case word god....or even gods.
  24. As I recall we did something like this:\ Incoming Scouts wend straight to the new handbook, new requirements. Scouts still on the trail to FC at the time were allowed to complete the current rank in progress, but then needed to use the new requirements for any ranks down the line. As I recall, the only changes of consequence for Star and Life were the EDGE requirements. We created a page that could be inserted in to the older scout's handbooks to track that requirement. Some of the TF>FC requirements changes slightly -- as I recall the numbers changed a bit, nothing as big as this year's
  25. When you capitalize the word, the common understanding is that you are referring to the Christian, Muslim and Jewish God. When you use lower case letters you are referring to other gods people might believe in. So if BSA capitalizes the word they are using the former reference, not the latter. If they mean to change their intended meaning in "duty to God" they might want to change their capitalization.
