  1. We're heading out in about a month. Since we camp in Outpost, on the other side of the lake from camp, some was smart and bought the troop a propane heated shower unit. It's about a 3/4 mile hike to the nearest showerhouse. Nice thing is we know when they use it and when they don't.

It's a bear regulating the heat on the thing, to little water its too hot, to much, it's cold. Also we remind everyone to turn on the flow of water before firing up the thing, otherwise you hear a lot of screaming from the surprised showeree when the hose coupling blows from the pressure buildup. Thank God, no one has yet to be boiled alive.

  3. John,

Is the lad into sports, high school or otherwise? My son used his conditioning and training for his Personal Fitness MB.

Does he have a summer job, or taking any classes at school that can help with Per. Management?

When my son joined Scouting, he only had 2 years and 3 months to run the gauntlet to Eagle. He now states that starting into Scouting when he was older, was an advantage. He was more mature. He knew what needed to be done when, and what the consequences would be if he missed his self-imposed time-line. He was able to finish off the TF to FC requirements in short order. He stated that his curriculum at school really helped and actually made the MB's that he did during the school year much easier to do and achieve. It was duplicate work.

He used school staff that were MB counsellors. He had teachers write letters to other MBC's. He showed other MBC's school work that fulfilled MB requirements. He thinks it is ludicrous when an older scout states that they are to busy to complete their Eagle. If they want it, they can find and manage their time correctly to get it.

DO talk with the Scout. Let him know it is easier then he thinks. Help point him in the right direction, having school and sports help to finish up the requirements. Family Life he'll have to do on his own.

    Good Luck.

  4. Maybe the bear was after the Brownies. FOOD GUYS, NOT THE GIRLS.

To bad Larson retired. One of his best FAR SIDE's was the two polar bears sitting down chewing on igloos. Ones say to the other," I love the way these things are crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside."

On the more serious side of things,

Let's not forget that food isn't the only attraction for bears. Anything that smells good and like food, such as scented shampoos and soaps can attract them. Maybe she had on berry scented body splash. Vanilla or garlic works wonders at repelling skeeters, but I bet is mighty appealing to Smokey and his friends. Hey, Marinated Brownies!! Sorry, couldn't help myself.

Also, that is why they teach to wear clean clothing to bed each night and bear-bag the dirty cloths with the toiletries 200 yards from the tent sites. Same as the food bags. Maybe she dropped some food on her cloths earlier in the day during one of the meals

Yes, they are very lucky. I remember several incidents in NW Pa. in the 70's, around the Butler area, where there were several attacks and mauling. One in particular stands out. The Scout died of his injuries. The bear was after the shampoo scent that was on the Scouts hair when it went through the tent. The first thing the bear grabbed was his head. Endgame.

And yes the kids think it will never happen to them, especially in Ohio. Guess what? A year or two ago Smokey got tired of SW Pa. and took a walkabout through Eastern Ohio. He came mighty close to 7 Ranges Scout Reservation amd Camp McKinley, our Council's two main camps which are about 18 miles apart. He came in about 40 to 50 miles before turning north. He was hit by a surprised motorist just east of Kent, Ohio, who watched as he shrugged it off and ran into the woods. He was seen a few days later heading toward the Astabula area, which houses the Greater Western Reserve Council's main camp. I don't remember the ending to the escapades other then it didn't end bad for the bear.

  5. Buckeye Council's 7 Ranges Scout Reservation Pipestone Camp Honors Program, 81 years strong and still going. Can't say how many Scouts/Scouters come through each week (at least 300-400). According to the camp director, outside of National's main high adventure reservations, we draw the next largest crowds nationally from 20-25 different states, Canada and Europe, just so they can earn their Pipestones.

  6. 1 dutch oven for both meals.

You have to pot for the one pot dinner.

Use the dutch oven for breakfast burritos. Cook the bacon in either the pot or on the lid (flipped up side down and used as a skillet). Cook the sausage in the pot first, drain the grease, add eggs, then cheese. Use the lid to warm the wraps, then chow down.

    Bon Apetit

  7. What required training does your Troop or Council mandate for leaders, before they are considered worthy of leading youth into the backcountry on treks and adventures? How many require WFA, WFR or higher? How many Councils sponsor WFA or WFR classes?

If so, does your Council mandate specific equipment for the trek?

How about Swift Water Operations and Rescue training for river trips?

Is Leave No Trace training required?

I just read in another forum that National might be requiring at least one contingency leader be trained in WFA for Philmont starting in 2008. Will this also apply to Northern Tier?

  8. AED's are popping up in discussions on Scouts-L. Just found this thread.

The cost shouldn't be a factor. There is plenty of grant money out there tagged to assist with the purchase of AED's. Some Councils have the foresight to buy several and have them placed at strategic locations at their camps, mainly are the program areas. Some Councils, due to the small size and weight of AED's, are requiring AED's to be part of High Adventure trek equipment. An 11 y/o can be taught how to use one.

You never know when that overweight leader will drop while on a backpacking trip, a scout will get hit in the chest with a line drive, be hit by lightning (2 of our CM's were hit at the same time at a soccer match, survived. A third victim required CPR and was successfully resuscitated).

I don't know the specifics on the response times of EMS at the last National Jambo, or availability or locations of any AED's, but the faster you can shock the heart back into a normal rhythm, the better the chances of survival. Continuous unbroken CPR has the potential to maintain enough blood-flow for survivability if you can get the AED to the victim fast, within 5 minutes if possible.

So, everybody get out there and get your grant writers busy working on submitting those proposals, not for one, but for several. Troops, there is no reason that your meeting place shouldn't have one. Talk with your CO about purchasing one with a grant or better yet, purchase one from your own grant proposal and fund-raising, and present it to your CO , to be kept and accessable at the meeting place.

You never know where your benefactors will come from. We had a little old lady in her 80's who purchased 8 AED's and gave two each to the village and township PD's to carry in four of the cruisers, one to the youth sports complex, and one to each of the three schools within the school system. It has saved at least one cardiac arrest victim since their purchase.

  9. So the Padre is throwing his weight around on the subject of stem cell research. If you believe in Stem Cell Research, your excommunicated.

Did Monsignor Palmer clarify whether he is talking about all STR, or did he differentiate between FSC research and Adult SC research, which are two different beasts when it comes to moral grounds and research funding? As posted in a thread about this subject in another forum, the Church doesn't hold the ASC research in the same contempt that it does FSC research.

As for the CO, which is the Doicese, not the specific Parish, what say the Bishop on the Priests decisions, YEA or NAY?

  10. I agree with ABCDE.

The boy falls into the "Special Needs" category. By pulling him out of an area where he feels comfortable and that he fits, and put him with scouts that are 2 or 3 years ahead of him developmentally and psychologically, could be disastrous for his psyche. You take the chance that the older scouts will not be understanding and accommodating of his differences and will tease and mock him. The same unfortunately may occur with some of the adult leadership also, unless he is crossed over into an appropriate Troop.

By letting him stay with the younger scouts that he is familiar with, and allowing them to cross over together, hopefully into the same troop, that the comradery will stay in tact, and it will be a good experience for him, not a trying one.

When he does advance into Boy Scouts, make sure his parents and Den Leader have a sit down with the troops adult leadership and SPL to discuss concerns, and any idiosyncrasies that they will need to be familiar with.

  11. Merlyn,

My tin hat is still on a little tight, you know, living here in northeast Ohio, with it's sudden outbreak of UFO activity and all. The ET's must either like the Rust Belt or the Great Lakes region. Anyway, please refresh my memory on the anthrax attacks. Were they home spun or Muslim spun plots. Honestly I don't remember, the Youngheimers is setting in.

Way to go Gonzo's Gang. If you hadn't stopped it, I'm Bruce Willis would have benn there to step in. LOL.

  12. Lisa,

That was my first river canoe trip 37 years back as a Webelos. At least back then it was allowed.

I haven't been down there for a few years, but there are several liveries in the area with any combination of trips from 4 miles on up, all the way to New Orleans. Weekends can be crowded on the river.

There is also some great hiking at the park. A good SP campground is the one that borders the creek below the dam. The main campground on Rt. 3 has a pool.

Also, within 10 to 20 minutes driving time is Pleasant Hill Lake and Campground, which has a nice beach, and Malabar Farm State Park which has a lot of conservation related acitivities.

I think you will be happy. When are you planning on going? Our Troop is about an hour northeast of the park. Depending when it is, maybe we can meet up.

    Eric

  13. ilduncans,

Isn't No. 11117 the ordering No. for the Veterans Insignia?

Has anyone determined if the Veterans Insignia relates to U.S. War Vet's? What are the dimensions of the Insignia, that it fits on the troop flag?

  14. FINALLY SOMEONE WAS FIGURED OUT WHAT THIS THREAD WAS SUPPOSE TO BE ABOUT.

    THANK YOU SSScouter.

How about we restart this thread and discuss what the original subject was suppose to be about ,unless I misunderstood fgoodwins true intent.

Everyone else who really want to talk about the downfalls of our politcal parties, the Monroe Doctrine, who is killing or wants to kill who, take it to a new thread and argue there.

By the way, no I'm not a conspiracy nut, left wing bleeding heart liberal, right wing extremist, etc. Unfortunately some people can't see their way thru sarcastic satirical posts that are trying to so how ridiculous some of us get with hijacking threads.

An man did they hijack your thread big time, fgoodwin. Please keep up the informative posts.

  15. Merlyn,

You must have missed last nights post. I back you up on attacks on foriegn soil, because you were correct.

Maybe Georgie didn't do anything, because he emulated Puttin. OH NO maybe I'm a Islamist Muslim, NOT!!!

It was all you crackpots who jumped on the bandwagon crying, "WHY ARE WE CATERING TO THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY, THEY DON'T LIKE US. SOME OF THEM WILL TRY, HAVE TRIED AND KILLED SOME OF US." Oh' I'm sorry, I forgot we live in a perfect country, "U.S. 2006 HOMICIDE RATE, ZERO", not. I'll bet more U.S. citizens died last year at hands of U.S citizens, then were killed in the war.

It's ashame that all the nuts come out of the woodwork with all the Xenophobia, and bowbeat a Scouter that is trying to do some good in his community to bridge the cultural differences so people can learn from eachother and get along with eachother

    Merlyn,

As for the conpiracies, I didn't start them, just having fun with them. Aren't they outlandishly ridicules, like some of the other posts in this thread. Get the idea.

  16. DasnK,

None of my business, but I know you have tough skin and don't get rattled by personal questions, Divorced, Widowed, Single? Might help some understand what angle your coming from.

    FScouter,

What if daddy or mommy die in a marriage? Is it really selfish of the other parent to want to hold onto a part of that love, and pass it on to the child?

Parents unable to provide for the child should give them up so they cam have a better life? that's what WELFARE is for. When dad was out of the picture for a few years, that is what mom used to get over the hard times. Hasn't used it since. Thank God my brother and I weren't thrown up for adoption just because of a few bad years like Grandad Murphy. Born just off the boat, poss. on boat, just before arriving. Parents arrived in rural Ohio to farm, found out how hard things were, and put a couple of kids up for adoption, to only show up a few years later when things were good to try and lay claim to the kids. Granted, the system is severely abused, and for all the wrong reasons.

  17. Merlyn,

Maybe GWB and Puttin are in cahoot's. You know, like the movie "WAG THE DOG".

Maybe GWB covertly funded the WTC attack to get the Americans to side with him so he could go to war and get into another country, for what ever reason.

Just like Puttin. What better way to get your freedom loving former communists to side with you about closing your borders, then cancelling regional elections so you don't have any opposition, then head back towards the old form of government, then to blow up a school full of Russian children being held by Chechen rebels. Bet his money was involved in it from the start.

    Owl,

I'll bet the 40% was a lot higher with the Germans after WWII, thinking we lied to them about good old Adolph. Unfortunately I have met a few that were children during the war, and until this day, they think Adolph was the greatest and that we lied and continue to do so, about his atrocities. A matter of fact, didn't we allow them into the country after WWI. Look what happened.

Hey, oldtimers, did we have a problem with the Germans back then like we're having with the Muslims now?

Scout, did we close the borders then? Didn't the Japanese citizens have Rights in the 40's?

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO A SCOUT IS HELPFUL, FRIENDLY, COURTEOUS AND KIND?THINK WE ARE FORGETTING SOMETHING HERE?

SO MUCH FOR BROTHERLY LOVE. LET'S BAR THE DOORS AND WINDOWS. EVERYONE IS OUT TO GET US!!!

Well it's been fun. Maybe we should all go to the World Jamboree. Maybe we would forget about some of these ridiculous arguments.(This message has been edited by ASM915)

  18. 1.) Trev, Thanks for clarifying on the God/Allah thing. You beat me to it.

2.) Mosque, Church, Temple, Synagogue. Just stick them in alphabetical order and FORGET ABOUT IT. Who really cares which order they're in?

3.)IRA/Al Qaeda. Lisa and Young Thing, let's get real.

AQ hates the Americans, but they kill indiscriminately; Americans, Shii, Sunni, other Muslims, Spanish Brit's.

IRA and the Brit.'s, Lisa the IRA learned their skills from the Brit.'s, especially after over 800 years of harassment and terror. Granddad was pure Irish born off the boat, and grandmom's English ancestors were sent to Eire as the Vice Counts to rule the natives. At least the IRA and Brit's didn't go around indiscriminately killing everyone else. OOPS, if I wanted to be real bad, I guess the Brit's did, you know, with their attempted colonization of the world, India, Africa, N. America, Australia. Maybe we should compare AQ with the Brit's instead of the IRA.

What can I say? My family hates each other, Irish/English, England and the Colonies, North and South, Big Brother and my Native Brothers.

Young Thing, close the borders to immigration to protect us? Sounds a bit like Adolph there. Also FDR. Once the borders are closed, what do we do with the Muslims already here? Should we toss them in the internment camps like the Japanese? How about just putting more stringent restrictions on the entry visa's. Gonzo's friends can keep a close watch on the new entries. They've done a nice job since 9-11. No attacks on American soil.

One point for Gonzo, BUT MERLYN TIES THE SCORE. Sorry Gonzo, Merlyn has you on terrorist attacks overseas since 9-11.

Did you all know that Iraq has a Scouting Movement that is over 60 years old?Went underground during Saddam, but they are trying to make a comeback. I don't think they want to kills us, eh?

WASN'T THIS ORIGINAL THREAD ABOUT SOMEONE TRYING TO DO SOMETHING NICE WITH SCOUTING AND THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY????

HOW IN THE HELL DID WE GET ON IRISH KILLING ENGLISH, ENGLISH TORTURING IRISH, AL QAEDA KILLING EVERBODY, WHICH RELIGIOUS STRUCTURE IS LISTED FIRST, THE DAMNED DRP, ADOLPH AND OSAMA?

Maybe if we stopped running around with this PHOBIA OF WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN (Beavah, wasn't this one of your previous threads?), be sensitive and aware of our neighbors and non-American/Christian Scouts cultural differences and work together, just maybe the world could become a better place.

(This message has been edited by ASM915)

  19. drsmith,

Go to page 2 of this thread to the first post. Click on the new thread about blues stars. In that thread, I think on the second page, someone has a website on service flags. In the site, a veterans bar in mentioned and shown. It is a blue field with one white star on it honoring U.S. Vet's.

Those that have posted that they have seen Veteran Bars on Troop flags, is the above described item what you have seen, or something resembling it?

  20. gwd,

18 months back, one day while at Council, our former DE haded me such a list, of District Webelos that apparently had not joined Troops. The District covers the whole western side of our county.

What I did was go though the list looking for addresses that fell within a geographic area around the town that our Troop meets in. Every listing that had the two phone number exchanges that was fell within our village and township, along with any listings within a 5 mile radius were put on my list.

The Troop then set a day for an Open House. Troop introductory letters were sent out to the boys inviting them and their parents to come to the event. The Thursday before the Open House, a few leaders made calls to the parents asking if they had received the invitation, and inviting them again to come. If the parent felt distance was a factor, other Troops that might be closer were promoted instead.

One word of advice, the Council's list is not always up to date. Three of the boys had joined Troops, and the parents found it interesting that their sons hadn't shown up on Council recharter lists.

    Good luck,

    Eric

  21. On the family passing the position issue, Th mother, the Advisor, seemed to try to control both groups, Troop and Crew. Dad, the SM, seemed there as the token male figure. Never heard or saw him do much the 6 or so months my son was involved in the Crew. As for being the advisor, mom pretty much told everyone, scouts and parents alike, how it was going to happen. She had the Troop and Crew meeting on the same night, same place same romm. Daughter was the lead Venturer.

The mother refused to have anything to do with the Council, office staff, camps, store, etc. She would send the scouts/venturers to the neighboring Councils camps and stores, use their MBC's, etc. She and he knew all the scouting rules, but would only abide by the ones that benefited them. When they were called into a meeting by Council or District, on issues, they would send someone else from the Troop/Crew that had no idea what they were walking into, if anyone was sent at all. If a private meeting was set up without them being invited and they found out, then they would show ranting and raging (not a misspell). We've all heard of the A-One control freaks. Mom was their trainer.

    kenk,

I don't have a problem when a Scout comes back to the Troop that their father was or is SM or ASM in and join the adult leadership. the problem with the above situation is/was that the girl was put into her fathers position when he stepped down, by the mother to keep from loosing control.

I know several females who are ASM's and SM's and do a great job at it. They know and follow the rules and guidelines though.

I know several young adults under 23 who have had more life experiences then most of us 40 somethings.

As for SEX, DRUGS and ALCOHOL,

If you get caught with the drugs by the authorities or someone in the organization, I'll be one of the first people to politely be asking you to step down and out of the Troop. I'll be more then willing to help you get help if the person wants it. Alcohol, if you pull a DUI, or are found driving on an activity or participating in such activity and have had more then the dinner drink, the same will be asked of you.

As for sex, well I'm not going to be running around checking out vehicles at the popular make-out spots looking for my leadership, or peeping into windows leading the Sex Inquisition, but if your stupid enough to get someone pregnant or get yourself pregnant and get caught, you pay the piper. If a wedding is in the picture and the situation made MORALLY correct, then I think there is a possibility for a discussion on "MORALLY STRAIGHT" for the lads, if the person is willing to be involved and help with the discussion.
