  1. After your kind work of sewing the merit badges on -- it is his turn to sew them on the longer sash. Tried all sorts of other ways myself, new longer is the only way it really works. Situation was reversed for myself. Son asked if we should get the longer sash - me being not real bright at that moment said no. The following agreement was reached "if he out grew his sash, I would move and sew the merit badges on it" (He sewed on the MB on the shorter sash). He also waited until he had filled it (about 56) then told me "the sash is too short - I went ahead and picked up a longer one for you Dad" LOL

  3. Eamonn - Wish there were more SM like you but the reality is there isn't. I never needed an Eagle advisor when I was SM. But like you I knew what the boys were doing in and out of scouting -- still do with quite a few who have gone on to college, married etc.... It was about the relationship with the boys -- it all goes back to adult or boy led -- adult led they don't have the time to really get to know the boys they are to busy telling what to do.

  4. shortridge -- the organization/head individual has been open to Eagle Scout projects being done at their facility and has taken the time to understand the process. Unfortunately, in our area many organizations committee and sub committee just the approval of a Scout doing a project, then they committee it to death with approving all the details of project.

We have an Eagle Advisor -- this is do to the time constraints (SM doesn't have the time) and the number of boys that are life scouts. The job of the Advisor is to answer questions, make sure project workbook has all parts, make sure the councils added parts are in the packet - it is a second set of eyes. The advisor may also make sure all the records are correct. The only comment about starting the project is when they reach life -- they are given a packet and told to start thinking about possibilities. To be honest most of the time, the advisor answers questions on everything from projects to where to get donations and double checks on the dates, signatures all the forms - application, project workbook, life purpose statement, making a copy of all the materials and taking the packet to the council office.

  5. Merlyn_LeRoy -- plenty of blame to go around. Congress knew of Osama in 1987 -- or rather was informed (they were to busy being cute and humorous for media) of the threat. They ignored it. Clinton's admin. insisted that among the political prisnors in Isr , even those with blood on their hands be released. One named "Muhammed Atta" repayed us with taking out Tower One. All of our Political leaders need to get off self and buddies and concetrate on the country.

  6. This organization does not and never has had the funds to help with Eagle Project costs. Nor have mini grants etc.. ever been a possibility. According to the Scouts communication (invoice), his family paid out the $$. He is not in my troop. My thinking is along the lines of 540Beaver, what amazed me was the response of many of the SM's. Let's hang him out to dry seems to be the current view -- perhaps that will cool after initial shock. I see this as a definite "failure to communicate" on the side of the Eagle Advisor. I know others in this position really stress the need for getting out there and getting donations. Quite a few, Eagle Advisors have commented on Scouts coming to them and asking how do I go get donations (so odviously some scouts read the Project Workbook). It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Part of me sort of questions his whole project -- or rather what did he actually learn -- did he do the work or a well meaning parent.

  7. Stick it out for your Eagle -- but also look into a venture crew. They are designed for the teenage busy life style. Also remember you and the other boys can go on the equivilant of a patrol campout (just don't call it a venture patrol) organize all the details and talk to adult leadership about going with you.

  8. Got a call from an individual who has supported Eagle projects for years. He had a scout who did his Eagle project send him a $1000.00 bill (for re embursement). Talk about blow your mind. If his brother wasn't already an Eagle Scout, I might understand he didn't get it -- never heard of this have you all? And how would you handle it?

  9. Congratulations to you and Matt!

Your other son can look at other Troops or Venture Crew (if 14) to find one that fits the Scouting model. I know many scouts who have done the same.

I never have heard anyone say getting their Eagle was a waste of time or not worth it but I have heard many say they wish they would have gone the distance.

  10. Oh Please Gern must you look for insult in everything.

-- there was not any reference or indication that the nine were better than one. Trevorum is proud (as he should be) of the nine boys he worked with and it is a testament to him and to their familys' to have 9 boys who elected to go the distance. Once again CONGRATULATIONS Trevorum you have every right to feel proud and honored. It is great to see they have elected to have a ECOH many in our area do not --

You will have lots of great storie to share about their adventures.

  11. What I saw a cub group do was recruit older Boy Scouts (if the boy did not have an older male role model) - They ended coming up with some new awards: like the cake for the fastest sugar high, cakes of angle (for crooked ones) -- the boys (all of them) had alot of fun. Plus, some of the older scouts really bonded with the cubs and became sort of big brothers.

  12. Great minds. Neilup This young man is one our my as SM, wife as ASM core founding scouts. We have already decided that we will take care of the Eagle Kit (the silver just like everyone else is getting). This kid has served as a youth ambassador, active in his church, works full time plus pays for his vehicle insurance and gas, pays for a private school, maintains grades, is being watched by top baseball scouts for college, helps with the Red Cross and helps his family. He has had to function as a young man since he was about 14. We are very proud of him. How the rest of the group can't see that is beyond me.

With all the talk of Eagle mills, these (5) founding boys not only completed the current BSA requirements but as a complement to me = completed the old not so soft requirements. Right now, this young man is saving to be able to become a life NESA member. All five were elected into OA as soon as they made the rank requirement - unfortunately our lodge is in serious trouble (adults again)-- but they have gone out and helped other lodges. They believe in the brotherhood of scouting and are good friends with many other boys in troops around the country and community == a few communicate with scouts overseas. Can you tell we are proud of them. As far as we are concerned they are examples of what life scouts should look to be. They all believe and follow the scout oath, law, motto, and slogan - they even track their Good turn dailies. We are so excited to see what they will do with their lives - but my goodness we will miss them as they head for college. Their parents exemplify the understanding of "it takes all of us in todays society"

Now as long as the Venture Adventure doesn't kill us old guys -- we will get to be on a new journey with them.

God, I LOVE this Stuff!! Trust me they were typical 11 years olds - well except the whole group is ADD.

  13. Stosh

I think I am going to bring my tiger (of course by the tail) up to Wiscon. by spring break I might need a rest and you and Eagledad sound like you would enjoy the ride.

Yee haa == just got emails on horseback trip -- when are they studying?

  14. Hmm my wife is adopted. She worked with a county health agency as a lactation consultant. She had the cream of the teenage mothers. I was pretty surprised by her thoughts - no child at 14 can be a good mother - even those who played at it and tried did not have the tools or maturity. Now throw in a former drug addict kid -- yep that kid would be so lucky to be raised in that environnment. She is sure people will now want to tell us all about the EXCEPTIONS - but that is what they are exceptions. She thinks it is worse to punish the baby by having in grow up in a situation that does not have much of a chance of a good outcome. After working with lots of teen moms - she will give them credit for trying, but she believes adoption or abortion. She thanks God her birth mother did not keep her. A child does not have the ability to think far ahead enough to decide what is best for the baby in the long run - if they did they would give them up to families who can offer more than childish love and a chance at a life.

So the question is: who really pays for the poor choices a young person makes?

  15. The issue is not money at all. It is a brand new(untrained new to scouting) committee with sons who have at the most gotten to 1st class.

Oh, i found out, they decided earlier to not do anything for the previous 3 Scouts who earned their Eagles and were given their awards by other places. This includes little to no recognition. And then they wonder why those scouts aren't guiding their children.

  16. I had a VERY upset assistant SM call me, the committee decide that they were not going to pay for an up coming Eagle Scouts Medal/kit. They had decided 4 months ago to pay for the Eagle Scout Kit for each Eagle. Now the troop is young and only has 3 Eagles and their kits were paid for as an honoring gesture from outside groups. But to say we will pay for the other two Eagles coming up but not this third one is ridiculous. Oh, the reason is he will be leaving for college so not active with the troop.

I would appreciate hearing how some other troops handle their Eagles:
