  1. You can buy historic American flags along with the world brotherhood flag on ebay. You can find them for between $5-$10. Have the scouts carry in the flags in the Eagle Court. You can also purchase a flag flown over the Capital through your local congressman. Fold and present it to the new Eagle Scout.
  2. In our council, the office takes the paperwork (the keep a copy send one to national and one to the district) and lists the adult on a merit badge advisor list but dose not list the badges - each dist. (they receive the paper that lists the badges any any statment why they are qualified to do the badge) maintaines their own list and a few council people have a copy of all the district lists. Yes merit badge counselers are covered by the scout insurance policy that is why council keeps the list. Usually the advancement person will ask for new volunteers and sometimes people do call to ask how t
  3. The Dist. Adcancenent Chair. is responsable for Merit Badge Counselors. It his his job to recrute and train them, in addition he will maintain the list of active counselors (most are usually updated once per year). All the unit reports are recorded in the councel office and then sent to him along with the blue cards which he keeps for 5 years. There should also be a council advancement chair. who works with the district people and a (paid) scout exc. who is resopnsible to see everything works. YES you can easily sign up if you know the subject either as work or a hobby.
  4. We live in an urban area and our troop has had the best luck with garage sales and pancake breakfast (we also sell Sees Candy). Our best ones have been in local shopping center parking lots - brings out a lot of community support. The Fire Dept always shows up in force, the Police stop by and even some homeless people come and try to pay. Get a banner for your troop and display it anytine you have a fundraiser or a service project, just about all the feedback we have received has been good!
  5. www.venturing-mag.org is a good site started by Jim Winters of Venture Crew 441. They have the most up to date info I can find on the web.
  6. I expect that every scouter who looks at a website with a slant will form his own opinion. When an Eagle Scout has his board of review he is asked for his opinion an many sobjects; there are no ritht or wrong answers to these questions, rather the board is looking to see if the scout is able to defend his position. As for the people behind of "save our scouts", I have marched with some of them. They are scouters in the Southern Californis area. They were outraged when our local Eagle Scout color guard was booed at the last Democratic Convention. They started a petition drive to keep Expl
  7. Next time I go to a sales meeting, I'll have a new job description "glorified begging".Teaching selling and rejection is a life skill all scouts should learn.
  8. As a scout I was taught to respect the rithts and values of others, but I was told that others in return would respect my values. Today some groups say you must accept their values but they are not willing to accept mine. Scouting dose need to be defended. Good people must speek out often to protect their rights and values. I have found www.saveourscouts.com This is a group of scouters who help councils under attack.
  9. GREAT IDEA! Just drop the contest. Competition in scouting is great between patrols, between troops but not for rank advancement. A good troop can help scouts advance, often one patrol will help each other along and after 3-4 years of hard work (fun) they all will be Eagle Scouts. Others in the same troop, others will not be active and usually drop out at star or life, but they still had a positive learning experience and will remember scouting fondly when they are adults. Keep it fun and reward you scouts and your troop will grow.
  10. Last year, Traffic Safty merit badge has new requirements and a new book was produced this January. National started a promotion for this new badge change and our unit was one of the first units to receive a $50 gift certificate for having 5 or more scouts receive the badge. I would like National to do this for every new badge change!
  11. All I was trying to say is that "offical uniform" jackets should have the boy scout seal on the lable. If I buy the same jacket 1/3 the price of the one sold in the scout shop as the official windbreaker; the only way to tell is the lable inside. I would like to remind some scouters to lighten up - the boy scouts is not the Army! I like to see scouts (adults too) wear a brag jacket.
  12. Would the Americian people be better served if there either no ACLU or no Boy Scout of America.
  13. The last time I looked, the red windbreaker sold in our scout shop did not have the official tag inside only on the paper tag with the scout logo to sew on. I have seen many of these jackets filled with patches. If the patch police come by just tell them to lighten up! Better yet have 2 jackets, take both to camp, when someone objects put on your official 2 patch jacket.
  14. Our council has over 8500 Venture Scouts (including Sea Scouts) in more than 700 units. Venture Scouts who are at least 1st Class and want to receive their Eagle Scout rank must be co-registered in a scout troop. Eagle Scout is a Boy Scout award although leadership in a Venture Crew can be used for Eagle Scout.
  15. I know of many troops that encourage patrol campouts - usually for advancement in larger troops. They often require a few older scouts to attend as instructors so that they can be signed off for leadership. Most of the older scouts only want to go on high adventure outings. If you have made your best effort to work with your unit and it is still not good, by all means move.
  16. FYI - Slontwovvy "Venturers registered in a crew or ship prior to their 21st birthday may continue as members after their 21th birthday until the crew or ship recharters or until they reach their 22nd birthday, whichever comes first."From Venture Application form No.28-303C
  17. Start a Venture Crew in conjuction with your troop. This gives the scouts more responsibility and new awards to earn and they can be Venture Scouts till 22. To earn a venture award they must teach the skill they have mastered. The green uniforms give then a special ID and a goal for younger scouts to get to Eagle. Look the program over - it may be a benefit to your troop.
  18. I don't think national keeps that information, but there have been several newspaper articles about scouts earning every merit badge. Several years ago I meet an Eagle Scout in our council who had earned every merit badge. He told me that when he had more than 80 badges scouters started calling him to ask if he would like to earn the badge they offered. He said the hardest one for him was the last one he earned - waterskiing which he finished on his 18th birthday!
  19. In my younger days I thaught the ACLU did some good things for America, but now their actions prove them to be more anti-american. The ACLU would be happy to have the Boy Scouts reduced to the size of the Royal Rangers and to have a youth group with no spirtual side or strong values take over the #1 youth group in America.
  20. In the 60's you could order the Eagle Scout logo under the stone of your high school class ring. I lost mine many years ago. You can check with your scout shop or national supply, I think you can still order a class style Eagle Scout ring.
  21. Yes, I was wrong in my previous post, the rule is 3 months per palm. I will announce this at our next rountable ; but in our council many scoutmasters only have a troop board os review every 5 or 6 months and they have been putting in palm applications for back to back silver for their older Eagle Scouts. Our council office is swamped with Eagle applications (almost 200 per year)and the regular office person responsible is on workers comp. If the scoutmaster puts in the application and the council approves it I will not be the palm police.
  22. I made these stoves at a troop meeting seversl years ago; the scouts liked them and they did try to use them but they don't hold up backpacking, not enough heat to cook a full meal. They are good for a meeting project. They remind me of the sterno stove I used when I was a scout.
  23. The closest event I have seen is the Annual Awards Dinner Dance for Venturing. In our council, this is an event run by the Venture Scouts. They have dinner and receive their awards, then the teens play games and dance. The party was still going when I left at 10 PM, most planned to stay overnight and play field games in the morning. This was only the 2nd year for this dance but the Venture Scouts like it. It looked like there were more females than males. I am sure this event will be much bigger next year.
  24. JOTT 2002 is May 11th, new scouts like to know that they are part of a worldwide brotherhood. Each unit plans its own event to take part in the Jamboree of the Trail. This event was started in Canada and each year they pick a scout designed patch for the event. You can buy the patches for $1.50 each at their website- www.jott.org
