  1. The 100th year of the OA is really not that far away. With a founding in 1915, we are about 3 away. What are your thoughts of what would be cool or things that you might have heard will be on tap for the celebration?
  2. Last year I just handed out the yellow beads as they earned them as Wolves. This year I want to try and do better when they earn the red as a Bear. What do you do when handing out Immediate Recognition Beads?
  3. Thanks for the input. We were thinking as a Pack activity, not as a recruitment event. Good advice.
  4. We list the optional awards on our website. In our Pack communication we might highlight one a month, as Den Leader I pick one and work on it throughout the year. These would be belt loops, pins, Say Yes to Reading, etc. We earned the Leave No Trace and Emergency Preparedness the Tiger Year, World Conservation Award the Wolf Year and the Whittling Chip the Bear Year. We are planning to have it organized that they can earn their Webelos Super Achiever Award when they are at that rank. We have some that do it, and some that don't each year.
  5. Has anyone done a Video Game Night? We are thinking of doing one and give them an opportunity to earn the Video Game Belt Loop and Pin. Has anyone gotten a company (Best Buy, Family Video, Hastings, etc) to let you borrow consoles and games, or worked out something different? Interested to hear anything you might have done. We are thinking abour running it from 6pm to midnight or something like that.
  6. Other places to look for an advisor is the local Natural Resource Conservation Office, a "conservation" professor at a local college, a local county conservation district, etc.
  7. -Geocaching -Dutch oven desserts -Water Rockets -Scouts Own Service -Night Hike!! -Flag Football
  8. Had a parent ask for ideas on what to do with their Cub Scout's neckerchiefs. Anyone have cool ideas on how to display or what to do with them? Thank you in advance.
  9. A Cubmasters Hike. (Something I got from here) Just get together, hike for an hour and call it good. Add a theme like a scavenger hunt, or a Leave No Trace hike. Lots of ideas.
  10. We use Google sites and are working to use the Google products like Picasa, Gmail, Google calendar for our Pack. We use Scoutmanage for administration.
  11. Some more "unofficial" sites that might help http://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Hornaday_Award http://www.hornadaybsa.org/ http://www.conservationbsa.com/
  12. I hate to bring up an old thread, but why does the Cub Scout 2010 program call for Scouts to receive elective credit for pieces of achievements done above and beyond what is required for the rank. On Den meeting 2, Achievement 3 is used toward the Bear Rank. It says that after a and j and two others are used, this plan call for more achievements that would be used as electives after the badge is earned. To me, this puts the Cub Scout 2010 program and the Bear handbook in conflict. Is there a change in the way that Bear electives are handled? Is there going to be a change?
  13. "SO why must he wait until the next year to receive something he already earned?" - I agree 100% with that. They should never wait to receive something that they earned. With the rank earned approach, the new, just joined June 1 Tiger, has nothing that he can be awarded yet we should be trying to recruit Scouts to join us during the summer months so that they can get in on the fun and hopefully hook them into Scouting. With the rank working towards approach, a Webelos would be awarded the Webelos pin twice, which does not make sense either. Also, the majority of Scouts would never ha
  14. Thanks guys. I remember having something after our Pack meetings growing up, but I think that you have convinced me to not pursue this for our Pack. I appreciate your input.
  15. After doing some reading on boyscouttrail.com and meritbadge.org, I am now convinced that we messed up last year when we awarded the National Summertime Award Pins. We awarded the pins at the rank they were working toward, instead of earned. The explanation that comes from meritbadge.org is "boys who have attained the rank of Tiger will receive the Tiger pin even though they are in a Wolf Den and working towards the Wolf rank." With this new infomration, we can easily switch with the Scouts who were awarded incorrectly and explain to the parents what we did. The one that I do n
  16. Don't forget about Sock Wars! We do a Fall Carnival with the Scouts. Each Den makes and brings a game. Candy for prizes provided by the Dens.
  17. June We are holding a bike ride aro0und the lake. Scouts will get to work on the belt loop, pin and Bears will complete Achievement 14. July Pack Swim Party and Raingutter Regatta - The adults are making and painting the regattas all white. Cubs and siblings will get to marker, sticker the boats in any fashion they they wish. No prizes, challenge your friends for bragging rights and have fun! Everyone will get a chance to do the Swimming Belt Loop, Pin and advancement related activities. August Pack Picnic - We will have a picnic at the lake and are doing Geocaching. We did th
  18. How do you incorporate your Den projects (art projects, poster boards, paper mache, etc) into the Den meeting? We have nothing displayed except once a year t Blue and Gold. I would like to see this changed but want to ask others about it first. My first thought is a table in the back, which is not great but better then where we are now. Thanks for any advice.
  19. Do you have snacks at Pack meetings and what kind of snacks do you do?
  20. Saturday I will be co-training my first BALOO for the Council. Besides the curriculum that we teach, what other information do you wish you would have received when you completed BALOO?
  21. June, July and August are just around the corner. What are your ideas for your Pack as they work toward the National Pack Summertime Award? In June, we will be completing the Bicycle Belt Loop and Pin at the local lake. In July we will complete the Swimming Belt Loop and Pin as well as have a Raingutter Regatta. We will pre-make all the boats and paint them the same color. The Scouts and siblings get to decorate them in any manner that they want 15 minutes before the race. It is all for fun, no trophies or heats, they just pick who they want to race and everyone is getting a patch.
  22. I was looking through the spring/summer catalog and noticed some new threads for Cub Scouts. In the description it said that they were reflective of the Cub Scout motto-"Cub Scouts Rule" Looked online at the shirt and the description included "The meaningful motto "Cub Scouts Rule" is printed just below." I know the motto is "Do Your Best," but why confuse new people? http://www.scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/ItemDetail.aspx?cat=01RTL&ctgy=PRODUCTS&c2=NEW&c3=&c4=&lv=2&item=612644-48 Thoughts?
  23. I just want to say thank you to everyone that provides ideas and input on this forum. Last month we had Sock Wars, an idea I got from here. It was a blast. The kids loved it and are still talking about it. Even the Boy Scouts who came to do the crossover got to play and were all smiles. (The agency we sent 13 gallons of new socks to was happy as well.) Tonight we introduced the Cheer Box. The kids loved it and the ones that were chosen to pull out a cheer were all smiles! These are just two recent examples and there have been lots of good infomration that I have used and passed
  24. I got the idea of Sock Wars from this forum. We did it last month and it may go down as the highlight of the year. We had 4 big boxes and the Scouts brought boxes to make a fort on each team. We divided them up 1, 2, 1, 2. We had a round against parents, a round against the Boy Scouts that were there for the crossover, it was a blast! We have 30 Cub Scouts.
