  1. He needs to be told directly and firmly to stop hitting the booze before he comes to Scout meetings. It would be best from you to say hey fella lay off the sauce before the den meetings. But if you feel uncomforatable as a Tiger den mom, get one of the other dads to relay the message. He knows the rules. If he is reeking of the stuff he likely has a drinking issue . And he knows he has an issue. Good luck
  2. A lot of words were writen in this post to defend the status quo. The blind assumption is that the old scoutmaster is doing it right and the newbies just need to get overthemselves. Maybe. But my experince, as the newbie, was that the old scoutmaster wasn't doing it right and is was painfully obvious to anyone who read the handbook. It didn't matter how motivated, inspired the boys and the adults were to redirect the program, things weren't going to change. It could be Eagle sendrom by the parents and the older scouts, get half way through Star or already have Life and all you wan
  3. For those unfamiliar the Powder horn first weekend it is like a 12 subject short course. Every 90 minutes you are being moved to a new location to hear and then actively participate in an event. We heard an experienced Kayak shop owner discuss kayaking trips/expeditions then we hopped in the lake and paddled around some. We learned climb on safely then rappelled for an hour. We jumped on some horse, shot riffles, pistols and shotguns. It was, here is something your crew could do and here is a resource to use when planning this type of event. The first day was a lot of review, safe swi
  4. In the troop we just left, the CC, treasurer, and five other Committee members crossed from the same pack. Half the troop was from one webelos pack almost one single den. We could not change a thing. Not the campouts, not the adult lead program not the popcorn money. Nothing! The SM and a few of the old timers stuck together and refused to change. The committee was loaded with high energy and motivated parents. The old SM wasn't going to change so we left. One can change a policy and a program but you can't change an individual. So when the program and the individual are one in th
  5. If these look essntially the same to me. Cooking MB 3) Plan a menu for two straight days (six meals) of camping. Include the following: a) A camp dinner with soup; meat, fish, poultry, or an appropriate substitute; two fresh vegetables; drink; and dessert. All are to be properly prepared. When preparing your menu, follow the nutritional guidelines set by the food pyramid. b) A one-pot dinner. Use foods other than canned. c) Using the menu planned for requirement 3, make a food list showing cost and amount needed to feed three or more boys. d) List the utensils needed to co
  6. The story going forward: Next week we have a court of honor to capture all the awards these kids earned since May. (old troop took too long to hold a CoH, then kicked us out once they heard we were forming a new troop) Over the next two weeks we do cooking work In four weeks we go camping on the fifth week we hold an offical PLC meeting In Decemeber we do Pioneering In january we take two Webelos dens camping to do some pioneering projcets In feb we go to Kennedy Space center and the beat goes on.
  7. Last night eight Boy Scouts walked into an American Legion hall and a new troop was born. The old hall with faded pictures of our country''s heroes, a bingo machine on stage and a bunch of wobbly ceiling fans came alive. The boys over-talked each other picking a summer camp, scrambled for markers to create a flag, said their oath and their law and played manhunt all before I gave my first scoutmaster''s minute. In other words a normal meeting. The senior patrol leader did a great job for his first day on the job. I have great friends who make up the parents of the troop and sometimes
  8. I leave Firday for Powderhorn weekend I. I''ll let you know how it goes.
  9. Great Post Hops. Yea we focus too much on the end and too little on the journey.
  10. Well since we are sharing bear stories. Last summer we rented a remote cabin in Shenandoah national park. It was a 1930's CCW type of cabin built a mile or so off the road back in the woods. Anyway, we had seen bear tracks so I thought one had been there recently. On the second morning I existed the cabin to head to the privy which was up the hill behind the cabin. As I exit the front door and march ten feet up the trail I see a big black bear 50 feet up the privy trail. I saw him first and tried to call for my wife and kids to see. When I did he stood up on his haunches and we
  11. This is a non eagle court of honor. I have a several scouts getting tenderfoot a few more getting second-class, one getting first-class and a many merit badges. Its been a long time coming. I down loaded some off the net. I like the theatrics of the old ceremonies but what is currently taking place in our troops? So tell me what you got for a routine CoH.
  12. I think the ideal time to take Wood badge is as a Cub. I did.
  13. So far: 3 for 3 against I can see that tents like all equipment if neglected falls into disrepair quickly. I can see a parallel between uniforms and unit tents. And the quarter master issues must be resolved. I like the idea of assigning the tent to go home with a scout to be returned dry and tagged for use or repair. But does that really happen? I also like the idea of scouts inspecting their own gear prior to a campout. That''s adult stuff that the kids should be doing.
  14. Our troop currently uses personal tents meaning that the parents/ scouts are left to supply their own tents. The benefits are cost to the troop and all the drying and cleaning are left to up to dad/mom to do on Sunday afternoon. The con to this is, none of the tents are uniform and some are the size of garages while some are the size a pup tent. There is also the "this is my tent and I want X and Y with me." The garage style tents also increase the number of scouts to a small crowd. And we all know crowds don''t go to sleep. With troop tents the "the way I see it" is that the troop c
  15. Most forums are like this. Running forums will debate for 8 pages about the exact time to eat a banana before a race. A wood working forum debates whether 300 grit paper under the European grit rating is actually 220 grit under the US system. To 99.9% of the people > Yawn! But when I was running and trying not to get sick when I raced it was import for me to know when to eat a banana. Making furniture requires equally detailed inquires. Yep this may not be the real world but if you got a detailed question on scouting this place is sure a great place to have. I really l
  16. Seeing the "new thread" I thought I would give an update on how our patrol has fared over the last five months. We are now on our fifth patrol leader in our New scout Patrol. All kids covet the position and look forward to being the patrol leaders. A pattern can be seen. Every patrol leaders first week is a disaster. They get too silly or too bossy sometimes doing both in the same hour. Silliness has been a bigger problem then bossiness. By the second week things are picking up. They are starting to get comfortable with their position and the patrol is getting used tothem. I try
  17. Dear food (I Mean woodbadgers) I too had a great time both weekends. I wanted to go back as staff but (snif) I was not asked. I even sent in an email to the new director. No reply. I used to be a Bear. SR676 (This message has been edited by Its Me)
  18. Scouters, No one wrote that tour permits shpuldn''t be filled out. There was merely an identification that they are not instruments of insurance. Most of the time our Council doesn''t even send it back to our unit. We have to ask that it get sent back. I would guess that 99% of the scouters who visit these forums are filling out tour permits.
  19. Scotteng, seems to nail it. The permit is to let council know what troop was where when. Note all past tense. troutmaster where did you read that a permit is an insurance coverage instrument?
  20. Interesting I liked the part at the end where the observation is made that the preteens and teens learn more form each other that adults they are about to become. I also agreed that as a society we do infinitial (sp) our children. I think there is a parallel to scouting. One SM may be of the opinion that kids cant teach kids Yet they teach each other complex game skills, skateboard moves, songs and whole list of items.
  21. We have had dogs on cub scouting outings. No problem. I don't have a problem with dogs at campouts. You mentioned that these dogs were not a problem. Adults yaking away on into the night is the biggest disturbance at cubscout campouts. The banning of dogs isn't about safety or hygene or (insert issue) this is about your personal preference. You prefer to camp without dogs. Then make up the rule you are the cubmaster.
  22. Pass the popcorn this is about to get good.
  23. I can settle in and tell myself and my son that it's not so bad. Outdoor adventures, leadership development and self reliance are over rated. I can continue to have long heart to heart discussions with the SM referencing where and how we could use the existing BSA program instead of making up one. I can continue to listen to the committee who have asked me to change the intrenched practices of a 50 year old man. I could work on getting rid of the endearing but inept SM from a troop which is charted by his church. I could leave for another troop. I could start my own
  24. There is no hope working with this guy and you won't be able to change him. Nor will a chat from some Unit Commisioner change his ways. You are in Webelos 2 so you have about 6-7 months left. Get him and his boy out of your den and 75% of your problems will go away. Flat out ask him not to attend den meetings. Get the boy to transfer to another den. Form a new den, change the meeting night so that he can't attend. He will create havoc as you plan your arrow of light and cross over ceremonies. You should be looking at Webelos only campouts over the next few months. Take charge
  25. To follow-up with my original post. The father no longer requires his boy's to sleep in his tent. In fact we just did a patrol campout and neither the father nor the older brother came along. I don't think this would have occured at the pace it did had we not pushed a little. That said, having been in this troop for five months, I can say that this was a symptom of a much bigger problem. All the campouts have been in RV parks and public campgrounds. This I believe was done so that family camping could take place. This troop is a webelos III troop. We now plan to leave this
