  1. E, think back to the fall of 2005. Hurricane Katrina. Everything that happened in New Orleans is President Bush's fault because he is racist. It was on the news for months. This was quite an event and still is, but it is not likely that it will be a national news story for very long. The difference is the flooding has occurred in areas with a lot of Caucasion people and a lot of farmers. New Orleans was mainly black people. Because they weren't pulled out of New Orleans and given everything, the government was racist. There are farmers and others who could use assistance right
  2. Found this letter in the Belleville News-Democrat. http://www.bnd.com "No flood of emotion Where are all of the Hollywood celebrities holding telethons asking for help in restoring Illinois, Missouri and Iowa and helping the folks affected by the floods? Where are the media asking the tough questions about why the federal government hasn't solved the problem? Asking where the FEMA trucks (and trailers) are? Why isn't the federal government relocating people from flood-ravaged areas to free hotels in Chicago? When will Spike Lee say that the federal government blew up t
  3. Message Boards like this one definitely have a mission. This one, I believe, is here to help other Scouts and Scouters to share ideas, get answers, and maybe most important of all: develop friendships among the members. I know this last one is true for me. I've actually met a couple of people on this site and I've shared private discussions (emails or PM) with several more. Having found this web site (which led to finding another) and having internet contact with other members of the BSA afforded me the opportunity to attend the National Scout Jamboree in 2005. I have little doubt in my mind t
  4. As a moderator, we don't answer to individual posters. They can offer advice and there are avenues to do so. Pubicly calling for a moderator to step down is not one. I have been accused of being heavy-handed when it comes to moderating. I think several of the moderators here have. But I think we, as a group, do our jobs to the best of our abilities and try to keep things fair and civil. Just remember--nobody's keeping you here.
  5. "People, no matter how "nice" they are simply don't want to get involved." Too much liability. Even with Good Samaritan laws, if somebody helps out they are at risk of lawsuit. It's quite sad everything is a lawsuit now..
  6. Technology can be Great. Technology can be bad. I have just spent the last 4 hours trying to figure out a "basic" Home Theater system. We finally figured it out, but it sure took forever. Told my dad his "$49.99 speaker system" went up in price quite a bit tonight. He bought the system this afternoon while I was at work. I come home and we deal with it and rip the cable connection right out of the back of the TV. So we went and bought a brand new LCD TV Then, with basic cable, the quality was so bad he called and has added HD programming Also, place I work we rely heavily on the interne
  7. "And every homeowner of every district pays school taxes regardless if they have kids in school or not. What's your point?" It's called being a public school. It's your own fault if you choose to pay for education twice by sending a child to a private school. I also help pay for the Chicago Transportation System that can't support itself because of stupid spending. I have never once used it.
  8. The camp we go to does not provide tents that I know of. We always take ours. But we also have the Timberline 4 Outfitters so no complaints;). One thing we do get from the camp is two-burner stoves. We found out a couple years ago by accident that they lend those out.
  9. I don't think I made my point very clear in my previous post. Why should the BSA look to increase the number of scouts "earning" all 121 merit badges? Just for the patch? And so they can say that they have done all 121 merit badges? Those people drive me nuts. If scouts are working on all these merit badges, I'd be surprised if they have time to do much other stuff. If they can manage finishing all these merit badges and do other stuff, then I really have to question the quality that they are putting into stuff...
  10. "You correctly state in another thread regarding knots that "if you want a certain behavior to increase, reward it."" Why exactly would the BSA wish to see an increase in the number of Scouts doing many mindless activities, paperwork, etc solely for a patch? I am against any such knot because I see no need for it.
  11. Like we've talked about in a couple of my Health classes, You're gonna die somehow. Everything has a risk and I personally don't see this one as being a major one to be concerned about. I've got probably 4-5 of these bottles and I'll continue to use them.
  12. We've got close to 20 Timberline 4 Outfitters and love them! Pretty easy to put up and we haven't had any major issues that I can think of. Yes, they are expensive, but I think they'll last quite a while. I personally have an Alps Mountaineering tent. I don't remember the model name at the moment, but it's a backpacking tent, 2 person with two vestibules and two doors. High quality stuff:)
  13. "hops_scout it should be your gole to not correct spelling on a forum. its almost as bad as calling out the one who did the correcting." I only look for clarification on spelling when needed in order to understand the post. It was questioned if "gole" meant "girl" whereas I read it to mean "goal."
  14. "I wonder how I make money on this talent?" Either as a politician or as a weather forcaster! Both professions get paid to be wrong MOST of the time!
  15. The last thread to discuss this (started less than 72 hours ago) mentioned that there were minor changes being made to the pants so they are probably trying to get rid of the "1st generation" stuff to make room for the new "and improved (hopefully)" stuff.
  16. We have gotten to the point where we have gear for both. Last summer the troop bought some backpacking tents and highly suggested a certain brand's pack. Went as far as to offer a "rebate" for buying the backpacks. Each Scout got a backpacking trip paid for by the troop if they bought a backpack at a HUGE discount to start with. I believe some of them ended up paying maybe $40-50 for a nice internal frame. We've had a few stoves and filters already. They probably could use to be replaced. On the other side of things, we've got Timberline tents that have all been bought within th
  17. I read somewhere that it takes an average of 16 seconds to switch from doing compressions to giving rescue breaths! That's a long time! But I guess I really don't have to worry about it too much-- I don't expect to see CPR for Professional Rescuer to make that switch in the near future..
  18. I'm not sure that the new CPR really applies to Scout leaders.. We're looking at precious moments when a person collapses with cardiac arrest. If we're a day's hike from a road that means we're even further away from Paramedics. The vital organs can't survive that long on that little of oxygen. I was quite surprised when I was told of this change by one of the athletic training professors here at school. He told us that he was "going to tell us the change and we were going to forget it right away" because it only applies to the Lay Responder CPR. I just got certified in CPR for the P
  19. John, that's if the government is really out of the picture when it comes to Jamboree. I don't believe that is the case. I think it's a matter of they have a different need for the land. From what I've heard, the Army is involved in the process of finding a new location. I think it will be interesting to see what happens..
  20. Rappelling is more fun than climbing! And sure it can be dangerous, but it can also be safe too!
  21. I have read the this as well. From what I'm told this has less to do with the ACLU and its fight than it has to do with the fact that the Army is in an ever-changing environment at the moment and AP Hill is an active training facility. I have been told that the Army is helping the BSA locate a new location and they have identified something like 12 possibilities so far. I have seen some of the requirements and WOW! It shall be interesting what happens. I'll do some digging; I believe this has been discussed here before and if not I know on another site it has been.
  22. Region 7, I think it's a sticky slope situation. While Harvard is considered a private institution, it does received government money. If it were the elderly, I don't know if it'd be an issue. I see a bunch of older people in our rec centers. We have community memberships as well as student and Univeristy affiliate memberships. I don't see them making this request. As far as the Indian comments that have come up, they seem to want to be hidden and forgotten. Several universities have changed their mascots over the issue. One tribe has even gone as far as claimed themselves their own
  23. Absolutely no problem with that whatsoever IMO. The only issue would be whether doing so would be approved by his branch of service which I would assume he would know.
