  1. Here are a few questions I would ask.

    1. What is the main responsibility of the scoutmaster? I ask this question during my WEBELOS parent meeting to introduce our troop to them. 100% have gotten the answer wrong.

    2. Are you prepared to have every weekend taken up with a scouting event. (This may not apply to smaller troops) 1 weekend camping, 1 or 2 weekends for Eagle projects, 1 weekend for training. 1 weekend for Eagle ceremonies, etc. You get the point.

    3. How would you handle this behavior problem....(pick one)

    4. This might be the deal breaker...Do you have a trailer hitch or can you pull the trailer?

    5. Who do you see as the leader of the troop?

    6. Are you prepared to attend all PLC meetings?

    7. Are you prepared to attend all committee meetings along with your SPL

I'm sure I could think of more.

  2. I'm with Barry, make sure he has a vision.

I attended Strictly for Scoutmasters at Philmont a several years ago and had a very wise instructor (also named Barry) that discussed the importance of a vision statement.

When I meet with prospective WEBELOS parents, I give them a copy of MY PERSONAL vision statement that I wrote for my troop. While some may think it is corny, the parents are impressed. We typically gain 15-25 new scouts per year and hover around 100 scouts.

I actually whet back and read my vision statement about 6 months ago when I ran into an issue with a particular scout and him being able to attain Eagle. I read my vision statement and problem solved. I just turned in his Eagle application to the council 2 weeks ago.

Here is my personal vision statement. Notice I don't use the words "boy run" or "boy led" I purposly use the words "Scout led". I have a similar vision statement I reflect upon for the Ship I am skipper for.

As Scoutmaster of Troop xx, my vision is to help our scouts succeed. To empower the Scouts to be leaders of the Troop. Make available the tools necessary for the Troop to be truly Scout led. To provide the opportunities for scouts to advance to the 1st Class Rank within a year. To insure that opportunities and experiences are available to all scouts and to encourage rank advancement at all levels. To do this by capitalizing on the aims and methods of Scouting, the Scout Oath and the Scout Law. By providing skills training to develop our scouts in leadership, self-discipline, self-reliance, and acceptance of responsibility.

  4. Did one ever think that we as NRA instructor speak extra loud or shout louder is for 2 reasons, 1. We are wearing hearing protection and naturally speak or shout louder. 2. The youth BETTER be wearing hearing protection thus we have to speak or shout louder. Maybe the one claiming the instructor was shouting too loud was not wearing hearing protection.

If a safetly violation occurs you better hope the instructor is shouting loud enough to gain attention, it might be your boy that takes the hit if the perpetrator did not hear a command.

  5. A new Advanced Sea Scout Leader training will soon be available called Seabadge Underway.

A pilot training course was held in May 2008 in the Florida Keys with two Commodores from the National Sea Scout Committee and 5 lucky participants, one from the Southern Region, one from the Northeast Region and three from the Central Region. COMPLETE understanding of Chapter four of the Sea Scout manual is MANDATORY as well as having the ability to chart and navigate a course the traditional way. Written tests are given prior to attending the course, upon arrival and at the end of the course which must be passed to graduate. Knowledge of 15 knots tied in less than three minutes must also be passed to complete the course.

From the National Support Committee Sea Scouts, BSA Committee Report 10 February 2009

    Seabadge Underway

Seabadge is an advanced leadership training course for Sea Scout leaders; similar to Woodbadge. It is for adults currently registered as Sea Scout leaders, and council professionals and commissioner staff

working with Sea Scout Ships. It is intense leadership and management training focused on successful Sea Scout unit program management.

Seabadge Underway is another step in the development of adult Sea Scout leaders. This new course is conducted underway with the participants carrying out the roles of Sea Scout youth underway aboard a boat. The course curriculum has been developed and planning is well along for the first offering this year.

  6. Bob White,

You mention that if a troop follows the scouting program, scouts will earn two or three ranks the 1st year.

I've never been able to find where this prgram is spelled out. I've only seen that it is "encouraged but should not be pressured...so a boy may work on the requirements at his own speed. (scoutmaster handbook page 119)

Is there a publication that shows this 1st year program you speak of?

    Thanks

  7. Since we are talking about Merit Badges here and not rank requirements, I have to point out that what evmori claims in the statement below is NOT correct. NO REQUIREMENT CHANGES WITHIN A MERIT BADGE CAN EVER BE APPROVED BY ANYONE. If a scout cannot complete a required merit badge, a request for an alternative merit badge can be submitted only after all Eagle required merit badges that can be completed in their entirety are completed. Then the scout or his parents can apply for alternative merit badges using form # 58-730 and submit to the District advancement committee for approval, upon that approval, it gets submitted to the Council Advancement committee for approval(As detailed on pages 39-43 of the Advancement Committee Policies and Procedures Manual Publication #33088 and on page 29 of the "Scouting for Youth with Disabilities Manual" publication #34059

You can't just change the requirements because of a disability. All requirement changes must be approved.

  8. Ahoy Captain,

I sat 2 rows in front of you at the international conference and have attended Seabadge myself. Infact I was shocked to see that out of 65 participants in our International Conference, 5 of us that I knew of that had taken Seabadge training.

Myself, there was two scouters in the row just in front of you, Pete as you mentioned and another Skipper who had a beard one day and shaved the next.

I've come to learn that Sea Scouts is the best kept secret in scouting. But I'm trying to change that by taling about it as much as possible.

  9. Bob White, I do see that on the Cub Scout leader Knot progreess records I looked at, (Cubmaster and Cub Scouter)

Again, Tenure applies to a single registration within a unit.

Note that is says for example, on the Cub Scouter award progress record, "Complete 2 years as a registered adult leader in CUB SCOUTING in a pack" That would indicate one Tenure. Now, if one is also registered as a Scoutmaster that would be a different Tenure.

May I direct your attention to the Tenure requirement on the Boy Scout Leaders Training Record. It states " Complete a total of 2 years as a registered adult Boy Scout Leader" That's it. No mention of time cannot be used toward anything else. Now, direct your attention to the Venturing Advisor's Key. It states "Complete three years of registered tenure as a Venturing crew Advisor within a five year period" Again, no mention that time cannot be used toward another key or award.

The important thing to remember here are SEPARATE registrations in DIFFERENT UNITS equals different Tenure times. One must understand what the term tenure means. Now, if it said Tenure as a registered leader within any BSA Program, I would have to agree with you.
