  1. I forgot to add that we'll have to wait and see if Obama keeps his promise about not raising taxes on the middle class. During his campaign, former president Clinton promised not to raise taxes on the middle class, but he broke that promise. Hopefully, Obama is more honest than Clinton was.
  2. It's because Obama plans on taxing businesses MORE on top of the currently bad economy that people are worried. I know of some people who will be laid off if Obama does follow through with his tax increases. My husband's company has already warned them to not expect a Christmas bonus this year, since Obama got elected. In past years we have used the bonus to pay our property taxes. Now we'll have to take the taxes out of our savings. Sure, we'll find a way manage it, but we won't be able to give to charities any more, since we won't have the extra money.
  3. Yes, it is patriotic to pay taxes. There will always be a part of the population who are physically and/or mentally unable to work, so of course we should support them. Now, is it really patriotic to ask some people to pay more taxes simply because other able-bodied people don't want to work hard enough to support themselves? If Obama just taxes the rich, then the wealthy will have no incentive to make more money. If the poor are just handed money, then they will have no incentive to work. Who does that leave? Us middle class workers. Any one can see that policy is not going to wo
  4. I have some friends who own their own businesses and they are very worried about the future under Obama. Even though Obama claims that he won't raise taxes on the middle class, he is planning on increasing taxes on businesses. When these companies have increased taxes to pay, they have to pass on that cost, they can't just "eat" it. Businesses will have to raise prices on their goods and services and/or lay off employees. So, we middle class workers will be hurt after all. One of my friends owns a business that has been in the family for over 50 years and now she and her relatives are afr
  5. OGE, I agree that the republican party let McCain down. Since McCain is not as conservative as most of us wanted, he had a tough battle to fight. I can't figure out why McCain didn't play clips of all those democrat friends of his, saying how great he was (before McCain decided to run for president.) There are a lot of other things that he could have done, but failed to do. Maybe I should have been his political advisor! Now we need to pray that our leaders will heed God's calls, instead of turning their backs on Him.
  6. So, now we republicans are not well travelled? HaHa! I, too have been to most of the states in the US, so does that make me a democrat? I live in Illinois and am appalled that a senator who did NOTHING for my state is now going to be president. Obama voted "present" over 100 times (I think the number is around 160) instead of taking a stand on issues. This insured that he would have very little "baggage" when he ran for president. So, he did nothing for Illinois, and it earned him the presidency. We have a very corrupt governor, and yet people still voted in more democrats. The C
  7. I took this as a humorous way for military personnel to show where they would rather be. I did not see anything derogatory towards the people who say "Allah Akbar", but rather a desire to be in a different location. Oh, well, some people like to look for bad in eerything. By the way, how do they know the 72 virgins are going to be female? What a shock if the suicide bombers discover that their virgins are male instead of female?!
  8. If Bush supporters are not vocal about McCain, then why does Obama think McCain and Bush are so tied together? I am for McCain, because he is stronger on my top 3 issues: 1. Following God's laws 2. Strong National defense 3. Keeping taxes lower I was and still am for Bush, even though I disagree with some of his policies. McCain was NOT my first choice - I wanted someone more conserative. Also, I still talk to my Democrat friends about why they should not vote Democrat. So, if you lived near me, you would still hear a Bush supporter being vocal about the election.
  9. At Summer Camp, one of our scouts wanted to do a skit that "slammed" President Bush. This came from what he hears at home, and had nothing to do with the fact that he is a scout. But, because he is a scout, and was at a scout event, I reminded him that his idea went against the Scout Law. He was really disappointed to not be able to do this skit. I've also heard this scout "slam" any and all Republicans at non-scouting events. It's sad that his parents have taught him to be so mean towards people he disagrees with. My kids know that my husband and I are Republican, but they also kn
  10. I, too, am sick of the political season. While searching the internet for McCain-Palin merchandise, I was appalled at the vulgar things that various companies are selling (both parties are represtented in good and bad ways.) Some things were down right nasty, some were simply in bad taste, others were kind of funny, but I would never wear a button or display a sign that said anything against the other candidate. I only want things that show my support of my candidate. I wish companies didn't make the negative merchandise, but obviously that stuff sells. How sad.
  11. I think we often forget that WE need to be on the Lord's side, not that we should expect HIM to be on our side. God does answer our prayers, but it's not always the answer we were looking for. I'm sure there are people from both parties who are praying for their candidate to win. So, when one wins, does that mean God liked that candidate better, or does it mean that more people prayed for the winner, so God rewarded them? Personally, I don't pray specifically for McCain to win. Instead I pray that God will help people make the choice that will best honor God. In my mind, abortion is
  12. If you saw a person in need of medical attention, would you seek help for that person? Most people wouldn't hesitate, but Obama voted against allowing doctors to save live-born babies who managed to survive the abortion process. Even other Democrats feel he has gone too far to the left with allowing innocent babies to die simply because he was afraid it would lead to further curtailing of abortion rights. I couldn't live with myself if I helped elect a man who thinks it's okay to allow innocent babies to be set aside to die, just because the parents didn't want a child. Even if y
  13. It's unfortunate that few people realize that GOD wants to be involved in EVERY part of our lives. It's us humans who are often unwilling to allow GOD into every part of our lives. GOD is not too busy for us. We are too busy for Him. Do you fellow Christians really believe that GOD doesn't care if you vote for someone who supports abortion? You're kidding yourself if you think HE will overlook that. Some of my Democrat friends think that as long as they, personally, are against abortion, then GOD won't mind if they vote for a pro-abortion candidate. They are trying to justify it i
  14. I'm not crazy about the big bailout, but something did need to be done. If the banks went under, then innocent people would lose their savings. On the other issue, at first glance it always looks like, yes, we do need to give money to more people on welfare, etc. But, when you look into it, you find that many people abuse the welfare and other systems, so, actually some cutting can be done. I personally know several people who get government aid even though they have enough money to support themselves. When I used to work in the school system, I knew of several families who were on w
  15. Thanks Brent, I'll add The Ultimate Gift to our list of movies to rent.
  16. Brent, Thanks for the heads up on the movie, Fireproof. My husband and I are always on the lookout for family friendly movies. We recently watched Facing the Giants for the first time, and it touched all of us. Sure, the acting wasn't polished, but the message certainly was. Both my boys, ages 12 and 15 enjoyed the movie and talked about its message long after we watched it.
  17. In recent years, businesses have failed in my area, due in large part to greedy union practices. Two union-run grocery store chains have disappeared, while the employee owned ones continue to flourish. I agree that unions were needed "way back when" but now, most seem to be corrupt. A decade ago, I knew several people who retired at age 48, thanks to their union benefits. But now, in part due to all those young retirees, many of those companies are failing, and/or no longer in business. The union administrators got rich, but the people they were supposedly helping lost their jobs. Even t
  18. You make some excellent points. I am afraid that Obama-mania in the media has taken hold of people who normally would think for themselves. I don't understand why people vote for someone when they know ahead of time some of the problems he will bring with him. Bill Clinton was a known womanizer, but people voted him in twice! That's why I'm scared that people will overlook Obama's baggage. All I can do is pray that people will vote the way God wants them to.
  19. The DE used very poor judgement in this case. His blatant disregard for the rules will cause some parents to think twice about letting their kids remain in scouting. My brother pulled his girls out of Girl Scouts for this very reason. The troop leader shared a tent with her live-in-lover on camp-outs. The troop leader saw nothing wrong with her behavior, so my brother knew that Girls Scouts was not the place for his girls to be!
  20. I liked Wolf, best, too. The boys were still young enough to think EVERYTHING was SO fun and yet they had a year of scouting experience under their belt. It's kind of like the 1st Christmas where a child is finally old enough to actually remember the previous Christmas.
  21. Even though you aren't in need of a multi-canoe/kayak trailer at this time, you might want to think ahead to when you do need one. Our troop has a 7-place canoe trailer with boxes on each side that can hold all the paddles and PFDs. For security, the boxes have locks and there are vertical bars on each side of the trailer that lock the canoes onto the trailer as well. Our troop has gotten lots of use out of these canoes and some of them show it! If you need to purchase new paddles and PFDs check around to see which stores in your area give a discount for scouts. A friend and I each got
  22. When the controversy came out about The Golden Compass, I talked to my boys about it. I didn't forbid them from reading the book or seeing the movie, but after they heard about the author's anti-religious intent they both decided to bypass that trilogy.
  23. This will be the 7th year that I've had 2 boys in scouting. Like ScoutNut suggested, my boys take one "master" order form and then later split up the orders as evenly as possible between 2 individual order forms. I add my own order last, so I can make sure their orders end up pretty close to the same amount.
  24. When our troop offers the camping merit badge biking option on a campout, we also have activities back at the campsite for those who choose not to or are physically unable to do the 15 mile bike ride. Of course this means a minimum of 4 leaders (but preferrably more) are needed - 2 to go with the bikers and 2 to stay back at camp. Since several of our leaders and parents like to bike, we always have plenty of adults to help. We are fortunate to be able to camp very close to a bike trail, so this ride isn't as dangerous as the ones on public roadways. Most of the boys who choose to do this
