  1. A tape or CD of the workshop sounds would be the best bet, so you dont have to worry about the boy that just wanted to try out the circular saw.
  2. First you need to gather as many of your Daughters friends into the fold, then determine what the crew is going to primarily focus on, arts, stamp collecting, shooting sports, high adventure, whatever you want, it's their choice, they write the by-laws. If this will be a co-ed crew then you need to recruit a male associate advisor (assuming you are the advisor of course) and then a couple more male and female associate advisors (that way if one or the other can't make it you can still meet) Then....let the kids roll!
  3. Drum him out of the corps......string him from the yardarm..... But failing to do those things, a talk between the scouts parent(s), yourself and your asst. is definately in order. This boy needs to learn that the way he talked to your asst. was 1) disrepectful 2) disruptive to the rest of the den (and also gets some other potential smart mouths thinking "well he said it" to the adult) and 3) hurtful because your asst. is there volunteering his time to help these kids, not be verbally abused.
  4. I ended up going with the gander mtn. version of a columbia winter coat with a removable liner, waterproof, has vents I can open to increase/decrease airflow. for headwear in the winter..my AF issue helmet liner that covers my lack of cranial coverage nicely!
  5. As was posted before, make sure that everyone is on the same page and all is documented (and signed by all participants) if you have your UC and DE there as well when you dismiss her that would be good. At the Pack meeting following the dismissal you explain that "Ms. X has left the services of the pack due to personal reasons, but you appreciate all she has done to help during her tenure" Done deal!
  6. Ahhh...Disturbed parent...too bad you can't just shoot them, then again...naw...let's just leave it at that!
  7. ScoutMomSD, maybe it's not the "creepy" ones you should be worrying about, after they find the couple with the 65 bodies buried in their back yard, and the TV newsperson asks the neighbor "so what were they like" they almost always answer with "they never bothered anyone, and were such nice people, the perfect neighbors" that runs along the lines of "gee that Steven King book can't be scary....it's got such a pretty cover" Evmori said it right. "I think we should limit leaders to one type of person! The type of person who wants to work with kids, meets the BSA requirements & is willing
  8. Now bear in mind that as a scout, my SM never had a child in the program, and his senior most ASM had his son eagle several years before I was in the troop, these were gentlemen who were experts at what was being taught in the '60/70's to scouts, and I had an immense amount of respect for these men, so much so that upon the death of "my" SM (while he was still a SM!) almost 2000 people attended his funeral to pay their respects. Creepy? I think not, would you consider that male teacher your son admires creepy even though he has no kids in school or never had kids? No you wouldn't, because tha
  9. Ahhh....but there's the rub....camp policy usually says "no open toed shoes allowed except in the shower"
  10. Last year at camp I saw a troop with their patrols using a pirate theme, they dressed the parts, carried a "treasure chest" (filled with the little gold and silver chocolates), drank "wine" with their dinners (sparkling grape juice) and of course said everything ending in "arrr", and another poster had a patrol do a "search for the holy grail" theme (rider on toy horse in front with rest of patrol behind clapping coconuts together...I love this one!). So my question is: are any of the rest of us doing something like this? in the case of the kids I saw, they really seemed to be enjoying thems
  11. GWD, thats awesome....the year before last there was a troop at camp that did a pirate theme, they dressed the part, carried a "treasure chest" with them everywhere (filled with the little gold and silver covered chocolates) and they drank "wine" with their dinners (sparkling grape juice) they had really planned the week out and the boys all seemed to be having a great time.
  12. It's nice to know I'm not the only slightly twisted individual here!, I would love to see a patrol go out to summer camp using the holy grail theme, PL on the toy horse, patrol following behind clapping coconuts together...."we are the knights of nit (sp?)!"
  13. A baby fell out of a window you'd think that her head would be split but luck was with her that morning and she fell in a barrel of sh-- AVing cream, be nice and clean, shave everyday and you'll always feel keen! I love that song! hmmmm.... well I'm a lumberjack and I'm okay.....
  14. What a perfect job that all these public figures that have run askance of the law could do as a public service! Imagine Paris Hilton reading the Citizenship MB handbook to you on an audio recording, LOL I would hope for Robin Williams to get nabbed for something...imagine him recording the shotgun MB handbook!
  15. Local1400, I'll one up you here....I will ship real German Shepard DP to anyone that wants it for as long as they want...they just pay the shipping, possible hazmat documentation required.
  16. Maybe it's just me, but it seems that the one that usually is the hardest to get to listen to me shares the same address!. My son when listening to another adult leader is the picture of calm, cool, attentiveness, but with me the mouth starts running, I guess he figures "it's just Dad" but I digress.... The talking stick works well in a group of 6-8 which is the most you "should" have in the den, but you will find your number growing over the coming years, so splitting up your group of 20 is a priority at this point. If the CM gives you a hard time you could always offer him control of the b
  17. Wow...bringing back some memories here.."The cobras are king, so don't tread on me man!"
  18. GKlose, as a 4th grader your son is a webelos I, not a bear
  19. Even starting mid Oct. the 5th grader could earn his Webelos badge, in fact I know an adult who started cubs as a Webelo II and got his arrow of light finished, depending on when the pack does their crossover he could possibly even finish the AOL time requirement. Let the older boy stay in his age group.
  20. I feel for you Rythos, although we had it the other way with our pack CO, kind "oh I'm sorry we booked someone else into your meeting slot" or "if you want to use the hall for your gathering (b/g banquet) you'll need to pay $XX" not being able to even count on them for meeting space can really hinder unit morale and therefore growth.
  21. Thanks for all the replys everyone...seems I'm still in the weeds with this one then as far as trying to convince the palace guard that the venturers are youth until the age of 21.
  22. Like some others have said before...dont get lazy now...it wouldn't hurt to take the webelos leader that will cross to your troop with his son and put him to work as your liason to the cubs, he has all these contacts with other webelos leaders from attending training and roundtables (hopefully) let him use those contacts to start cultivating relationships with other packs, starting with the webelo I's, the more they see of your troop and interact with you the more "like home" feeling they will have for your troop. Sure some will go elsewhere, but if the boys are exposed to activities with your
  23. yet I still have Scoutmasters who will argue the point ad infinum until they think they have beaten me into submission that "they're adults if they're over 18", I have shown them the references in the venture manuals, but alas on ears with too much gray hair covering them. JK I'm a silverback too, but I'm starting to run out of patience with these guys who are trying to "straighten out the venture guy on the rules". Has anyone else been running into this? or am I the lone ranger here?(This message has been edited by ElyriaLeader)
  24. We recently attended an out of council camp and were suprised when our 18+ y.o. crew members were told they had to stay with the adults, if I remember correctly aren't crew members considered youth until the age of 21? so which takes precedence? BSA policy says anyone over 18 is an adult for Boy Scouts, or all the venture manuals that say 21 is an adult for venture crews, so which is it? and why the difference at the camp?
  25. Even though I live closer to Firelands...And do love that camp, Avery Hand holds a special place for my family too. My son loved the fact that everything was closer to get to at Avery Hand, and no long hike up hernia hill for dinner every night. I haven't seen the books for the council, and frankly would understand little of it if I did, but with the number of scouts in our large council paying and the endowments the council has taken in I dont find it hard to believe that there is no money for the camps..with the blatant mismanagement of funds for the lease we had for the council headquarters
