  1. I have used that term myself lately, for both "Hollywood Indian" ceremonies and Scout uniformed ceremonies. But maybe I am spoiled. My lodge growing up had a relationship with the local nation, and had members on our LEC. One of the guys I worked with and did ceremonies with had an uncle on the tribal council. We worked with them to improve our regalia and make it more authentic. Lately it seems as if folks could care less about truly mastering ceremonies. We practiced and memorized ceremonies back in the day. We worked on both chapter and personal regalia. sadly I have seen ceremon

  2. We may need to be careful to not equate understanding cultura elements of various NA groups, with the inuendo of of Cultural Appropriation. Too many, it seems to me, jump overboard if even a mention of NA history or culture is put into discussion. Many of our issues in todays society seem to be overreactions to simple knowledge of others and their thoughts and histories. And often, that accusation is aimed specifically at the WAS parts of our society. Again, just my opininion.

  3. Perhaps this is an opportunity to turn your sadness into some local young dancers' joy, if you have that live connection to a nation and scouts don't care to put the work in. If those materials are anything like the materials for folk dresses, they are very expensive and cost is always a barrier. Those kinds of relationships institutionalize poorly, though. I can't imagine that all OA lodges have an 'invite' to learn more from someone in a local nation willing and able to take the time. You can't mandate what people outside your organization do. And you also can't mandate intentions or in

  4. Sounds very familiar. I came back to help the plc plan, as events were waiting to the very last minute to have a plan. Sometimes that resulted in events getting dropped. Wait too long and campsites can't be had. Wait too long and there's no enthusiasm and nobody signs up. So, the importance of having a calendar with enough detail far enough out can't be stressed enough. We just had a committee meeting and all sorts of problems stem from not having a plan with enough detail that people will look forward to doing it. Bringing this back to the original post, our cutoff used to be the me

  5. I'm not sure that matters much. You can have high quality regalia and it still will appear as cosplay... just highly dedicated cosplay. I can't tell you the number of times I've heard the word "cringy" used by scouts in reference to the Native American aspects of the OA. And yes, I do recognize that my screen name refers to a university that uses Native American regalia and symbols... with permission (although there is no doubt in my mind that permission comes with a price tag).

  6. It's really anyone's guess. The judge at the end of the hearing did acknowledge that he knew people were really waiting for a decision so that's a good thing. Some have suggested that he might want to wait for other decisions but that isn't normal behavior for District Court Judges in this situation. So....while no one in Wilmington expected the wait to be Silverstein-lengthy it's still hurry up and wait. It'll be six weeks on Thursday.

  7. All good ideas. Another way to introduce map&compass and begin the skill progression is have them use the M&C to navigate to a large object/area on the map instead of a tiny orientering control. For example, take a bearing from their location and navigate to the playground, then take another a navigate to the sledding hill and then another to... . This gets them accustomed to the basics of using the M&C together and not focusing on straight line to stay on the exact bearing. They do not need to be as precise in their bearing so it is more fun, and they will be more successful which

  8. Oh, no, yeah, they talk through that. That is when the rubber meets the road as a patrol to know who is going , who is buying food, and who is tenting with whom.

  9. If you had "Positive Covid Test" in the pool for the next reason why things will be delayed, you won. Thursday's hearing has been postponed until April, the 19th I think, because Judge Silverstein has Covid. In all fairness, this is unrelated to the wait for the District Court decision but related to the Coalition's Substantial Contribution claim hearing in the morning and the hearing in the afternoon to get the Trust "seed funding" so some operations can start. Another month....

  10. I think another fun orienteering-based activity would be to take a hike and do a scavenger hunt along the way for features that would be listed on a map: old stone wall, streambed, large rootstock, lone tree, reentrant, etc. If you can get a trail map, even if it isn't a topo one, they could draw in the symbols that correspond to those features. Or even without a map, just have some large copies of the symbols and when they find something that is represented in the list show you the symbol.

  11. My pleasure, @InquisitiveScouter! 3:30 isn't bad! I guess it helps that you must all have been sober 😉 It's too bad that program was cancelled, because culture has to be lived. It's one thing to briefly meet people on holiday or at an international camporee or jamboree, and completely different to live with people from another country in their country. Even as an expat or an immigrant you bring with you a cultural bubble if you and your partner are from the same other place. You also understand your own culture better by comparison. My American husband called me a pagan for ten years befo

  12. P.S. Approaching Midsommar 1987, I had the distinct pleasure of helping to construct the midsommarstång!! I went into the forest to help gather flowers and birch branches for the pole!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9bJpgyf1X4&ab_channel=GraceonTour The Swedish Scouts taught me the song, "Lasse går i ringen", and on Midsommar, we tried to break the record for dancing!! (Apparently, there was such a thing.) The sun set around 10 PM (IIRC), but I only made it till about 3:30 AM before I gave out 😛 Sunrise was about 4:00 AM!!! A new world of history, culture, food, and l
