  1. I might have handled it differently. A family shows up, with scouts in uniform, to some event and they haven't paid. That's fine. I think the first thing I would have done was consider how much the pack will go into debt for them paying nothing. Apparently it's about $4/scout, so call it $10. Next, I'd consider the shame and embarrassment on these scouts of being turned away. About the same time I'd ask myself why they didn't pay. That's always tough to figure out. They could be just trying to get a free ride, might just be really disorganized, might be broke and too shy to ask for help,

  2. Our council kindly plays bad cop for us. They won't let us keep anybody on the charter who is not trained fro their position.

  3. Best Time for Scouting for Food? Just ahead of expiration of SNAP benefits. ...About 1.6 million North Carolinians received SNAP benefits in 2022, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. More than 69% are in families with children. "I'm worried that a lot of families will be blindsided by this change, said Emily Johnston, a fellow with the Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy. "This is going to significantly change the way that families receiving benefits access food and change the way that families have to budget and prioritize," she said. Many food pantri

  4. Jesse, more than anything, your council needs adult leaders who will take Scouts camping and deliver the promise of adventure at the unit level. This is the heart of Scouting. If you do not have the heart to take them into the woods, then be an active committee member for a unit, and provide administrative support for those who do take on the task of outdoor adventure. Anything you can do to lighten their load will help them deliver more adventure for the youth. Examples include managing all the Troop medical forms, helping to mentor a youth in a support role (like Webmaster, Historia

  5. @RememberSchiff nice to see our efforts here in Mecklenburg are providing a positive to a difficult situation. We've been seeing year over year increases in in our Scouting for Food collection and I hope that continues.

  6. We recognize the scouts that age-out without Eagle. We do it in a couple of ways. As mentioned above, we will recognize them at their last outing - often gifting them a water bottle from that location, if available, and recognize them at their last scout meeting before turning 18. For the ones that are interested, we absolutely extend an open invitation for now or in the future to continue with the unit as an adult, including participating in high adventure treks.

  7. For clarification, for the SM are we talking the online portion or IOLS? I won't defend it, but it can be hard to attend an IOLS depending on when your council runs it. I had to go out of council to complete mine. For recalcitrant CM, you can do the in person training over time. Just show the videos one or two at a time and complete it that way. Edit: One good motivation for at least the SM getting IOLS training is insurance/lawsuit defense. IE if something happens then being able to say that you are following all the recommended BSA rules and made the best judgements possible in a g

  9. I commend your ability to hold the line. Even if they "just" paid the $4/Scout (or parent), they still haven't paid the dues and everything else that made the year possible. Should you get blow back? They aren't in the right, but I am not surprised that the "good 'o boy's club" will cause issues. If he is the "go to range guy" he should know this isn't free. Money is part of all of it - be it from the family or fund raisers. If it was my family? I'd say "we are back, it has been a long time, how much to even up for us to get back in the good?" That is what an adult would do. If you said $200,
