  1. Yes. There is a single corporation sole out of Salt Lake City that holds the deed to every LDS meetinghouse [actually two or three, but they are all indisputably under the control of the church’s central governing body]. All member donations are forwarded to Salt Lake City each week, and the central church leadership then turns around and funds each congregation’s annual operating budget on a per capita basis. All congregational bishops, too, are individually formally approved by Salt Lake prior to their ordination. (That’s how it works in the LDS Church within the USA, anyways. Other

  2. My days as a scout were in the 60's when everyone in the troop was in a complete uniform for every activity and every troop meeting included a uniform inspection, so I fully understand the desire to see that type of uniforming by our current scouts. My uniform and that of my scout are complete down to the socks, everything is in the correct place and everyone in my unit, district and council is used to the fact that they will never see us incorrectly uniformed. I am not really sure what you are referring to as far as scouts or scouters dressing in an offensive, embarrassing and inappropr

  3. Off and on through the years I have tried to point out the inclusion of the name of Jesus Christ in their longer name, which I understood to be the official one. Am fairly certain the usage of Mormon comes from the Book of Mormon, and that book has seemed to me to be the reason so many "Christians" have refused to recognize them as "Christians". For me, it has always been what verifies to me that they are one of the many off shoots of the larger family of Christians. While the extra book has never been something I have found acceptible for my own Christian belief, it also does not remove th

  4. Sort of. It’s had the same formal name since 1837-ish (“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints”). The issue has always been that the full name is kind of a mouthful and lends itself to shortening; and there’s been some back-and-forth from the church leadership over the years about whether “Mormon” was an appropriate short form since the term as an appellation both was coined by detractors of the church and tends to distract from what we see as our commitment to Jesus. About every twenty or thirty years we get direction from church leaders saying “please, lay off the ‘Mormon’ thing”

  5. Yeah, I’ve frankly never seen it outside of discussions of the BSA bankruptcy. But, when in Rome . . . 🙂

  6. Thank you for the answer !!!!! Wow. Even if two or three legal entities, those are massive deep, deep pockets to sue. .... FYI ... I periodically have to look up TCJC. It's not a common abbreviation for LDS without LDS tacked on.

  8. Heard somewhere "Change Happens" and you need to roll with the flow. My favorite is "Do you want the windows of the Church broken from the inside or the outside?" Our personal uniforming can be a reflection of the ideal. However, I want "them" at the meeting, so at least the see the ideal. Just a thought.

  9. In the case of the Methodist Church, I suspect you will find any of the established units have a long history of a safe and free meeting space, and often much storage as well. We have been our church basement since the building was dedicated in the thirties. With the slow deteriorization of the congregation, we have been allowed more storage options as well. Most importantly, almost 100 percent of the actual church membership loves the Scouts and when we interact, they show it both in financial sharing and more importantly simple friendliness. Since it is top heavy with elderly, though slo

  10. My understanding is the 72 hour rule, i.e. no registration needed for adults if the activity is under 72 hours, will be going away for Scouts BSA, Sea Scouts, and Venturing. It will remain for Cub Scouts.

  11. Why would we need a state law to mandate what is obviously needed? And that can apply to the distant past too. Why was the general public attitude so misdirected? Protection of the innocent should not need to be a point of legal law, only moral law. And, that too is part of the basic foundation of real Scouting, as well as most belief systems.

  12. There was a post in a BSA subreddit recently where some girls in a troop shared photos of them having fun on recent outings, including goofy faces and sticking out tongues. The photos were criticized for this, but I thought they were really fun and showed the side of scouting that would actually appeal to kids. Getting outside with friends, having some adventures, and being silly. We need more of this.

  13. I maintain a FB page for our Girl Troop. I post pictures and a description AFTER our events and share to the local community FB pages as well as the District and Council FB pages. I usually make a post on major holidays. Just this week I posted the new recruiting flyer I made up.
