  1. They are short staffed (hire taller staff?) and the bathrooms/showers aren't cleaned frequently. Some were downright nasty. An adult in our crew got sick with Covid on trail. He had to hike with us to Ponil to be extracted because rain made roads to Elkhorn impassable. His son said he wasn't feeling well but tested negative. He was also taken to the infirmary. He returned a little later after testing negative again. They told us they were pulling the rest of us healthy members from trail because they're in 2020 mode. But they couldn't get vehicles to Ponil to extract us. We'd be stuc

  2. We did still have a good time and got to summit Baldy. Hopefully things will improve for crews and staff this summer.

  3. Thanks for your detailed report, wish it had gone better for your crew. Scout salute to "The guy who is in charge of Ponil put us in a workshop, dried our clothes and fed us Elk spaghetti. We will be forever grateful."

  4. It's in a couple of councils and camps. I can't fathom how it continues. BSA is lucky the people who made Leave No Trace seem to be unaware of it and didn't cut images in to juxtapose with some of the interviews.

  5. Oo. Lockdown lifted. Do I need to wear a mask in here? Seriously, I have two small, possibly interesting points I’ve been sitting on during quarantine. Both go to the light year since the trial concluded. One, a friend relayed that JLSS’s mother passed at some point recently. I tried to confirm (pun intended), but found nothing. Second, since the Purdue re-do plan approval was appealed to the Second Circuit, the Circuit's ultimate decision on releases is still pending. Those working that case expected the ruling to have come down at least a week ago. Both of these things may be factoring into

  6. I’ve read about 50 IV files from the LA newspaper (?) website. They include a decent amount of correspondence between the local council and regional/ nations bsa. None say to destroy records. Most / all say to “forward on” any additional information.

  7. I think the how tos will be a little different for each troop because the personalities of adults. Adults must agree on the vision so that everyone buys in to it. Or, at least, they are willing to accept it as the course direction. I found that most adults don't really care about a vision so long as the Scoutmaster seems to have a grasp of where the troop is going. In my case, I lead a Troop meeting twice a year after each SPL election that required all the scouts and their parents to attend. I spent the first 20 minutes explaining Aims, Methods, Patrol Method (we call it boy run), and our tr

  8. It is. It is hard for parents who don’t know the program to know if it is worth the investment. That is why the $25 fee hurts. Since the main fee is prorated, I see why they have the $25. But unlike sports, many families don’t know what they are getting into and have to take a risk. Now the cost for that risk continues to grow.

  9. This is painful for recruiting Lions/Tigers. Add in the uniform cost, Pack dues and you can get to $200+ just to join Cub Scouts fairly quickly.

  10. We have a council fee, but our council uses it to be able to provide a number of activities at no additional charge to units. Things like district camporee, cub family camp, cub district shooting sports days, BALOO and IOLS training no longer have a fee associated with them. They also greatly reduced the fees for both NYLT and Woodbadge.

  12. As far a I am aware Mic-O-Say is limited to one council and one camp. Many of the complaints that I have seen raking OA over the coals for cultural insensitivity are actually accounts of Mic-O-Say and have had photos to show that. To the average outside person, there is no difference. In this day and age I do not see how it is still allowed to continue unchallenged by National.

  13. That's right, no one talked to me, either. This was in the early/mid 90's. As far as I know now, my abuser was not in the IV files although I'm fairly certain I was not the only one. I wonder how it will change my perception if I do find out as part of this process that he was. Reading your post about (at least) 11 other suspected victims has hit hard. I'm so sorry, it's hard to fathom.

  14. The BSA policy is clear. When a Scouter becomes aware that actual abuse is taking place, action should be taken to cease the immediate abuse, followed by a report to law enforcement, and then the Scout Executive. Whether a fact is abuse or not would depend on local law.

  16. This story doing the rounds really is tiresome. Let's be clear, no one, certainly not children, have been banned from saying anything. The document is a style guide, pure and simple, issued as guidance for anyone putting out written comms to ensure consistency. To be honest I didn't even know we had a style guide till this story came out. Although if you work for any organisation of more than a few hundred people you probably have one that you've never read. The only people who look at it are marketing people. It's a load of stuff and nonsense and part of the whole tiresome trop

  17. Well done. When I was the district SM Specific course trainer, I preached for units to stop splitting their troop for the summer camp experience. Summer camp is the best and safest place for youth to practice independent decision making and pump up their patrol method development. We averaged almost 100 scouts (95%) at summer camp because they enjoy the experience so much. We typically put the adults in a separate camp site to reinforce the scouts independence. The SPL is the hardest working person in the troop because has all the decision making responsibilities. The only decisions the adult

  18. It is adults who drive most of this and the negative connotations are perhaps most extreme in OA but not unique. There are also those adults who get up in front of other adults and youth and sing the Back to Gilwell song, or others who insist on singing some of the traditional camp fire songs or skits that are also more for the 1950s. I have seen this chase prospective or new scouts and families out the door. I think BSA needs to reevaluate how it is presenting itself overall, not just in OA.

  19. I'm an engineer so I value STEM but I do not want to see a focus on STEM in Scouts BSA. There is no shortage of STEM programs, focus, and push in school and home. Let Scouts be about other things.

  20. On a recent trip back to my home state of NJ I discovered that my dear beloved scout camp, Camp Watchung which closed in 1981, is now a county park. It had been planned for development but the developer got into financial trouble apparently and the county took the property over a few years ago. After downloading a map I set out on a hike along with my dad who camped there as a scout in the late '40s and with my troop as an ASM to see if we could identify any of what was left. Most of the buildings are gone and trees filed in the campsites but there were enough reminders that all of my day

  21. I did not read this in the IV files, but you piqued my curiosity and read a couple that were not my own. I came across this gem and I quote from Scout Executive James E Houck "From the date this was found out, there has been no contact made by the three men to the boys to my knowledge. The committee worked hard to overcome this situation and to keep it from getting to much publicity both for the boys and for scouting. They were able to get the services of a State Trooper, John Simms, who obtained the rank of Eagle" I may not be the smartest man but the fact that a committee worked ha

  22. I'm sorry these reporting and warning failures were added to the damage of the abuse itself. It's not good. Not good at all. I am waiting for my opportunity to request of BSA/the Trustee verification of the number of other claims that name my SM abuser, as well as any of those I know or suspect to be complicit. My discovery requests are already written. I also want to know dates and Tiers of abuse. I know for certain other boys were abused, but I do not know how many of them filed claims. I am 100% sure there are some, since I've verified that through backchannels after I saw my troop on
