  1. My sister-in-law passed along some of my dad’s awards. Among them was a pin for representing the VFW in the Voice of Democracy essay contest at my high school. I didn’t think much about it, and we teased him that it was his way of getting his picture in the paper every year. I even submitted an essay which we then had to read to an audience of our teachers while being recorded (audio, no video). Even though my classmates produced much better work — thus getting their picture in the paper with Dad, I found it to be a rewarding and thought-provoking experience. Still, it didn’t click as to

  2. I have issues with some of the inanities of the diversity/equity movement but for the most part there are a lot of people in scouting who are still in the dinosaur age. They are in our units, they are all over facebook and reddit and on some of the scout sites. I think the badge will be just fine and is a good thing in general. I have been in a mixed progressive/conservative council in a very blue state and the stuff that people say around here still curls the eyebrow hairs. I can't imagine what it's like elsewhere.

  4. Judge tosses Girl Scouts' recruitment suit vs. Boy Scouts (yahoo.com) This should toss them out of bankruptcy as well. It was a garbage lawsuit about an organization upset BSA started accepting girls. The good news is that on the ground, BSA & GSUSA volunteers kept working together. My pack & a few GSUSA groups just a few months ago had joint activities.

  5. Judge is looking for legal cover: "Do I feel like I'm weighing in on a dispute I should be weighing in on" Attorneys would be smart to focus not on the benefits or harm of any parts of this plan, but on the legality of it.

  6. To restart a new plan, go through voting, etc. could easily mean they would remain in bankruptcy through 2022. Their cash is near $0 by September and that assumes they can back off on bankruptcy expenses. It was interesting as it was the first time I heard anyone say it, but it seems clear, if this plan completely fails and is rejected, BSA will likely have to choose Chapter 7. Christian did give the judge a path to approval though ... I thought that was interesting. At least on the issues he raised today.

  7. It was an interesting point. Essentially. the insurers who spoke discussed their experience in Scouting and professed to not want an end to the BSA. But, that's illogical because no one has argued that this plan failing confirmation will NOT mean the end of the BSA.

  8. Interesting comment from the judge. Excess Insurer comments that two seperate psychologists said they believed there were many claims that weren't valid. Judge nodding and says "I noted that but they didn't say the reasons why."

  9. It appeared that she wanted to get to the break and knows that there are other objectors so she's probably holding off on questions. He was effective and did a great job of illustrating his points graphically. His "appropriate plan" is pretty comical. The insurers love the status quo. They get to ignore all the claims that are out-of-statute and fight the rest one-by-one using time and delay to their advantage. It'll be interesting to see if she's loading up questions to ask but she also commented that she wants to address today the schedule for the rest of the confirmation.

  10. Yes, that's all they can argue. For bankruptcy purposes, it technically remains an active claim (albeit disputed) because in theory GSA can appeal, have it sent back to district court for trial, & eventually win. But I wouldn't expect Judge Silverstein to spend much time on the GSA objection to plan confirmation.

  11. The certain insurer lawyer finished up on big aspect of their objection, that the deal wasn't negotiated in good faith. The ending was interesting. Doren, the lawyer, talked about being a boy scout from 10 - 18 and one of his proudest moments was earning Eagle Scout. He and the certain insurers do not want BSA to fold. They want BSA to exit bankruptcy, but with an appropriate plan. (per them, this plan isn't acceptable). I only listened to 15 mins or so, and there were almost no questions from the judge. Would be interesting if she asked about any aspect of his presentation.

  12. Recall two months ago: On November 12, 2020, Girl Scouts filed its proof of claim in the Bankruptcy Case, which is identified as Claim No. 11246 (as amended, supplemented or modified from time to time, the “Proof of Claim”)... As previously noted, Girl Scouts’ claim involves three distinct types of damages,...…to recover (1) defendant’s profits, (2) any damages sustained by the plaintiff, and (3) the costs of the action.”)... Girl Scouts currently estimates its claim to amount to no less than $18 million. Doc 8679 Filed 02/04/22 : https://casedocs.omniagentsolutions.com/c

  13. Also ... the events are also needed to create energy / connections for future contributions that don't get tied directly to the events. So losing money on some events might be acceptable if the overall on-going fundraising efforts are going well.

  14. I think you might be confusing inclusion and diversity. They aren't the same thing. Anyone who lives by the Oath and Law will do the right thing. no-matter the differences of the other person. That being said, how do you know non-white's and non-males to be a problem, I would be interested to see your data because I know the non-males around here make up close to 50% of the membership at the adult level. So your data will be interesting. As for Woodbadge making a difference, well, hmm. I don't see it. Maybe I'm looking to much at the big picture. However, because I have seen it loca

  16. The non-white and non-male populations to start with. I would think that hundreds of wood badgers each year might make a small difference. Small improvements, each year, add up to a lot.

  17. Don’t forget guys getting paid time off International Women’s Day! (I’m told it’s a thing among Russian office workers. Not so much among military.) But, really a scouter can make what he/she wants out of the diversity goal without dreading some PC police. It’s actually fun making the effort.

  22. Ok, there is a break in the hearing. I'm working while the hearing is in the background. From what I can gleam, AIG is asking how BSA executive committee was involved in pulling together the plan and also to clarify what they plan to do post bankruptcy. Speculation here ... it is almost as if AIG is laying out a case that BSA is attempting to dump most of the cost on insurers, sandbag their current financial situation and then post bankruptcy, show major cost savings and big donors to quickly recover (while insurance bares the brunt of the cost). AIG also spent a lot of time indicatin
