  1. Agreed, we're not a for profit corporation obligated to provide the highest possible dollar return to shareholders (arguably, for-profits aren't actually obligated to do that either). We serve the community's interests, and we're obligated to do what's best for the community; that doesn't mean we can ignore finances, but it doesn't obligate us to place finances first.

  2. Lenore Skenazy, who wrote the book Free Range Kids about just letting kids play more rather than all the structure/school work, helped start a new program called Let Grow, which is about setting up more play at schools. There's more info at letgrow.org (there's a free chapter in a second edition of her book at https://letgrow.org/free-chapter/ about how to set up a program at schools - K-8) but anyone here could have written it. Kids learning to be social, solve problems, help out younger kids, be self sufficient, gain confidence and, most importantly, have a lot of fun. It also explicitly ca

  3. Gents, you are operating under a misguided assumption... "The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law." Vision "The Boy Scouts of America will prepare every eligible youth in America to become a responsible, participating citizen and leader who is guided by the Scout Oath and Law." Nowhere in the mission or vision statement does it say the professional corps, or national or council boards will subscribe to the values and ideals of Scouting.

  5. Just my personal opinion, but the local council there is not showing good judgment. Would rather see the land protected with a smaller profit on it, than see it developed. From my perspective, even with all the issues currently, that should be a major consideration. Once it is developed, other than as a park or preserve, it is gone, period.

  8. Together with the questionable judgment of selling to a member of the Exec Board, ticking off a sitting US Senator is rarely a smart move. At a minimum, if they were going to sell to the highest bidder than the bidding should have been open, public, and transparent. It's also worth noting that they say the funds are going to be reinvested in the other camps; they are not claiming, at least in the current statement, that the fubds are going into the bankruptcy trust.

  9. Update: 3/01/2022 Deer Lake to be Sold for Private Development. In a surprise move that shocked many town and state officials, the Connecticut Yankee Council of the Boy Scouts of America announced last week that it had accepted an undisclosed offer for its Deer Lake property, effectively paving the way for development of the entire 250-plus acre parcel. Though the council did issue a statement that would leave open a window until March 31 for consideration of a “superior offer”, most town and state officials have said that the selling price, which is speculated to be twice the appra

  12. Declining membership... As much as it pains me to say, I don't think what BSA is offering what is wanted today. Cub School talks... A DE or other representative comes in and talks to the kids. They come out excited they are going to shoot BB Guns, Archery, Fishing, Camping. The pay their money,,, The first thing we do is tell em they have these 12 words to memorize and this other oath they gotta memorize and recite it all the time. Also, go take this online class about how the internet works and then these uncomfortable scenarios in this little book. We promise we will get to c

  13. What I liked about that chapter I linked to was that the author has a very clear, concise description of the program. It is as close to fun with a purpose as I've ever seen. The kids have fun making up games and playing them. The purpose is they learn people skills and imagination. I think the BSA could borrow those ideas heavily. That model is really close to what younger scouts want. Just make it outdoors. Adapt the safety so, for example, if a scout wants to play with knives they first have to learn knife safety. When they realize the blade is no longer cutting it's a great time for them to

  14. I absolutely agree and this thread consolidates comments share repeatedly on this board. Example ... I often wonder about the good and bad of the MB program. I'd almost rather see a program where if you go on the troop canoe trip for 25+ miles (with a bit of coaching and skill dev) the scout gets the Canoeing MB. It does not mean you need MB workbooks or sit-down class rooms. The only sit down should be in the canoe with the SM in the next canoe coaching the scouts on what a J stroke is and sneaking in terms for the scout to learn. ... Same with camping. If the scout camps with the t
