  1. Another possibility is the weather. They were calling for winter storms that could affect safe travel/driving in Delaware.

  2. Yes it is, so that may be interesting. I would think any change would require more discovery into voting and vote counting. I was wondering if perhaps Omni/BSA/LSS are aware of a major vote change (moving to 80%+) that would cause the meeting to be cancelled. However, there were many other concerns listed that even if the vote increased greatly, the hearing would have been helpful. In addition, a major vote count, in and of itself, could cause a need to revisit the schedule. So, I lean to the options of.. BSA has a change in direction (updated plan and/or updated strategy)

  3. I agree with everyone above regarding the general edict from the GTA that double dipping is always allowed unless explicited forbidden. Just as important, I would point out a few things regarding the National Outdoor Awards: First of all, in the case of NOA Conservation, requirement #4 explicitly states that the 25 hours are "including hours worked as part of requirements 1 through 3 above." So that means including all conservation service hours applied to Trail to First Class (req. 1) and all of the related merit badges (req. 3). There are no other limitations so it seems that the plai

  4. TANGENT ... I generally really like GTA. It's really well written. It's our guide to consistent execution. It's the guide for when others question our decisions. Section 4.2.3.6 is generally great. I like comments like "unless it is stated otherwise in the requiurements". Cool. There is part of 4.2.3.6 that I don't like. The last two paragraphs don't seem to 100% match. It sets up the situation where the scout can be guilt tripped by his leaders. "Hey, do you really want to be the kid who ..." ... But if challenged say in a formal appeal, the leader would lose as it's not ex

  5. Well, when salary has to be made every 2 weeks and camp can sit for 9 months, it's easy to see why this happens. I'm sure it's easy to get addicted to donations. From '45 to the late 60's I'm sure they got all they asked for. But that gravy train is long gone. And yet the culture of rewards is still based on donations. In the meantime, there are fewer volunteers with less outdoor knowledge that need more help in order to deliver a better program. That's a lot of change needed. As implied above, the real challenge is getting leadership to see that the leadership isn't working. Who wan

  6. Cool article! I consistently bring up the Scout Motto (on this forum and elsewhere) as the examplar of all Scouting Ideals; the article appears to agree with me. I would suggest that beyond society not understanding, is many Scouters do not either as advancement seems to be the focus, with service relegated to a rank or mB requirement.

  7. BSA just filed several updates to depositions they had scheduled. All were going to occur tomorrow, but they have been delayed to Jan 19 - 21. Still waiting to see the final vote posted. Also note that the judge is fully booked Wednesday this week. So, no clues found looking at the rest of her schedule. It actually looks like she is pretty booked until January 24.

  10. I spoke with Omni. The person in the know said, “The tabulation results are going to vary a bit, somewhat of a given between a preliminary report and a final. I don’t see any significant movement other than Class 9, which we called out in the declaration.”

  13. Absolutely you can double count. Unless the requirements specifically say otherwise. Also, since the project was conservation related, he could use it to fulfill requirements for the Distinguished Conservation Service Award. https://www.scouting.org/outdoor-programs/conservation-and-environment/conservation-awards-and-recognitions/bsa-distinguished-conservation-service-award/

  15. We did the Wind River Range in Wyoming. That was where the bugs were but it was stunning. My understanding is that the start of August would be fine there but don't quote me on that. We tried to do a 50 mile loop in about 6 days and we were just beating ourselves up. My GPS said we were doing something like 500' vertical for every mile horizontal. So about a mile vertical every day. We finally decided to cut a corner off of our loop and make it 38 miles or something. The scouts started smiling. Now, this was all because I, the old man in the crowd, pulled a muscle in my knee because I wasn't d

  16. There are a lot of nice backpacking trails in Colorado. So much that I've never been to Philmont. Philmont isn't about beauty, so I understand why scouts would like it. To answer your question, no, I haven't taken scouts to the San Juans. So you can get better specific trail information from others. However, in other HA trips I've taken scouts in Colorado and Wyoming, the things I'd be aware of is that 1) June in the high country is not summer, it's late winter/early spring and I've had 10 foot snow drifts to deal with over July 4th. Given the run off, trails can be very wet and mudd

  17. Sex abuse claimants torn over Boy Scout bankruptcy plan “If West Seneca resident Tracy Peterson had been sexually abused as a child in New York, his claim in federal bankruptcy court against the Boy Scouts of America could be worth upward of $1 million. But because the abuse is alleged to have occurred in the early 1970s in Texas, where Peterson was born and raised, he said his lawyers are telling him he probably will be eligible for no more than $30,000, minus 40% in attorney fees...” https://buffalonews.com/news/local/sex-abuse-claimants-torn-over-boy-scout-bankruptcy-plan/art
