  1. I just finished reading Bates' report. Now I have a headache. It's well-written, but a bunch of spin. So we're too old to deserve a decent settlement? While I get the sol issue, if a suit is valid, there's no telling what a jury would do. My abuser was a BSA employee who signed my merit badge card. So there's not much question as to BSA liability. If they reduce my claim by 90% for sol, then scale it down because I'm old, I just don't know why I'm bothering. Maybe they could add a couple of additional minus-scaling factors and I will owe the BSA. But the concept of this being

  2. Or call it an official church youth group activity? Leave the uniforms and handbooks at home, have fun, play in the outdoors. If the church is up for accepting the responsibility then it's all good. If not, it's an opportunity to fix something that has been broken for quite some time.

  3. In October 2017 I picked my son up at school. He informed me he wanted to join Cub Scouts. So, we got him signed and then they got me signed up. 🤣 This weekend he is going alone on his first Troop campus. How did that happen??

  4. For my sons' first year of camping, I would check but not pack. Once I found a GREEN ham and cheese sandwich from the previous campout. That I did unpack . IMHO for inexperienced scouts, the SPL/PL's should check packs before outing and at the next troop meeting after where packs should be clean, dry, empty or pre-packed with essential outdoor items. 5. I hope the BSA doesn’t read this and think it would be a new way of raising money. Next they will come out and ask us to sign over whatever settlement checks we do get. Their pitch will be because they do so much good for so many people and how could we be so greedy LOL.

  6. I agree; however, parents need to know their kids and do a check for those who need it. We had a scout attend a cold wet outing. While in the 60s in the day, it dropped to low 40s and rain in the late afternoon. He had shorts and shirt with no pants, sweatshirt, rain jacket, gloves, boots, anything. He had his fishing pole (even though we were nowhere near a lake/pond/river/body of water other than puddles of rain). It was pouring so much that it saturated all rain gear ... so we struggled to find enough dry/warm clothes for him (he was a large kid). We told his parents, they said yep, w

  7. Oh My God, that is so true Had a Scout come to the leader area on an outing, his challenge was no sleeping bag. We went to his tent, sleeping bag was in fact in the bottom of his pack. His comment "I guess dad put it in" Chatted with parents on Sunday on the importance of the Scouts packing their own gear, being responsible for their gear. Assisting and guiding is great, but THEY need to OWN it!!

  8. So,,.. that campout was cancelled. It supposed to be in the upper 30 to low 40s all day Saturday with 30 mph winds and maybe getting down in the teens at night. The Troop has decided to make a trip to a local indoor city pool instead, I have also made the decision to skip UoS and go with my kid.

  9. We’re getting a lot of that here, too. I think partly because it’s risky business demolishing a church. Renovation can be, in the long run, cost effective. It’s interesting to see churches spring up in warehouses while beer gardens move into some old church buildings.

  10. Do you have any standards that are kept for your pack meetings? For instance, in about an hour: Handouts placed for adults for pickup Flags and stands gathered Sound system gotten ready (option) Video gotten ready (option) Assistant Cubmaster greets Special Guest and manages their logistics Gather, Seating by Den with Den Leaders, possible craft at table Adults seated separately from scouts Adults to speak line up /// MEETING BEGINS 6:30 pm/// Flag Den of month presents flags Pledge of Allegiance Scout Oath and Law F

  11. Remember different advancement standards back then. "Master the skill" was the standard up to circa 1989 or 1999. Then it became "The badge represents what the Scout CAN DO, not what he has done (emphasis in original). Now it's one and done.

  12. I definitely that that is an option and it could be about COs. My other thought is that BSA knows this plan is dead. So, who do they blame? The TCC. Lay out the case that the TCC is not fulfilling their role Clearly 74% of claimants like this plan and the TCC is in the minority The TCC is just wasting the estates (trust's) money by fighting further The TCC sent that awful email The trust fully pays off survivors The TCC is obligated to represent all survivors and they are not The, when the court says return to mediation, throw a fit and submit a re

  13. I was wondering where this change came from and all I can think of is that people who feel trapped in a corner don't have free will. What looks like grasping at straws may be a response to something else. Maybe, since the vote, a bunch of CO's no longer believe the BSA's promises. Losing a lot of CO's would cause even more problems. The only way to protect the CO's is to cover their portion and the only way to do that is to say all the money we have, or could possibly get, is enough.

  14. From my days as a DE, there was a 2 month buffer period, that way if there are any paperwork issues, it can be resolved. I would save a copy of this document because BSA does have an Orwellian habit of removing documents, i.e. documents that stated Dodge Ball and its variants were indeed approved games prior to 2018.

  15. Some of my earliest comments here were about the lure of hearing BSA was going to "equitably compensate" all survivors of abuse in Scouting. It's all clear to me now. We started at $6100 being the "equitable" amount. Now, we're at $38,000 as the "paid in full" number. Now I get it. We're getting 5x more than is equitable compensation! Wee. Makes perfect sense. Brilliant PR strategy. Bring on the Drum Award! (Who's monitoring the microphone over there?)

  16. I'm actually ok with BSA being aggressive publicly against the TCC. I think it is a fair debate if the current plan could be the best one overall for all survivors. BSA's mistake is now having to defend saying they will fully pay all abuse survivors. In the disclosure statement, they didn't make that claim. I think that allowed BSA to say ... this is the best plan for you and we could never fully pay off all of the victims. It allowed some flexibility and to appropriately set expectations. However, now, in a court filing, they state " Survivors of Abuse Will Be Paid in Full U

  17. 100% agree with this statement. The court filing states (and bold is in the filing): Great! In fact, if BSA's law firm is so confident, perhaps they would insure the trust that if the trust ends up running out of $, Bates White will guarantee making up the difference! Or, if that doesn't work, I'm sure an insurance company would take a small payment to provide the insurance given how many degrees Dr. Bates has, I'm sure his analysis is spot on! I think they would get 100% of the vote, TCC on board, BSA, LCs and COs out of this mess! I go back to my prior commen

  18. BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — In the wake of tragedy comes volunteers; hundreds if not thousands of them. You might not think of cooking as your typical volunteer work, but it’s necessary. “We’ve purchased 300 hot dogs!” scoutmaster Ladonna Harmon said. ... She and her husband, scoutmaster Chris Harmon, teamed up with B.G. First Church to give out food, water and whatever else they could help with. 19. And please, for the love of all that is Scouting, make him pack his own gear! You can go through the Scout Handbook checklist with him to guide him, but please make him pack it. And starting today, after school & homework, have him gather at least about a third of his stuff ... if he waits until the last minute (Friday after school) , there will be problems for both of you. Windy and chilly in your area this weekend. Lows in the high 20's. Hats, gloves, and layers are a must. Don't know if you two are used to those temps. Is his sleeping bag good for that? And a final tric

  20. Agree, I really don't see why they can't make progress on those two non monetary facets. I may have some skepticism about the merits of the individual YP proposals: independent audits, universal background checks, more survivors on the board, etc., but as someone in the field running units, none of those things would be backbreakers, and we could learn to live with all of them. The independence of the settlement trust seems really easy, after all, how much does BSA care who's distributing money that no longer belongs to them. My best guess is that the bankruptcy specialist lawyers

  21. I do wish everyone on both sides could dispense with, "Mom! She's touching me...no I didn't! He stole my juice box...!" How did the value of the claims magically shrink to near the amount of the current kitty? Honestly, I plainly and simply want honesty. Let's find out definitively and see who did what right and/or wrong and let the tree shake out what gives way to gravity. Let's have a fair fight. Lord may we please have integrity in the vote? To loosely quote Mr. Buchbinder, "This is about survivors and not bondholders." Don't tell me you're for me and s/he is not. Show me. Pr

  22. Regardless of the side you are on, I think everyone would like to avoid waste. I really think it would help for JSS to start declaring what the court thinks of the plan. She frequently indicated she wanted to see where the claimants are at. It would be great if she: - Clarifies if non debtors can still be included post Purdue AND if that includes both LCs & COs (I see a world where she may agree to one and not the other) - Clarifies what % approval she is looking for ... she doesn't have to lock in a number ... but a comment that may allow parties some direction - Appoint
