Every time there was an aviation (or other major) accident in the Air Force, there were two investigations...a Safety Investigation Board (SIB) and an Accident Investigation Board (AIB). Seems to me that once again we really are stymied by our ridiculous legal system. The constant fear of law suits does not contribute to reporting things that are not absolute.

I don't know about places other than Michigan but you can get a clearance letter from the State verifying no child abuse or neglect charges or convictions. And I know the state police maintain a database that some people can check, but they are really restrictive on who can access it and for what. Ugh.. it would be great if something like a hospital's M&M conference could be done on these things, but our legal system makes that sort of thing being open for public inspection horrifying to contemplate. BSA won’t cough up the data or metrics specific to the history of child sexual abuse in Scouting and the full context of all abuse since the implementation and improvements. To help everyone be clear, the $50 is every year. For some perspective, my Catholic Diocese charges $25 every couple years to cover the cost of the background check necessary to be a scouter or a CYO coach. I have no idea for either organization how much of that is paid directly to the backgrounding company, how much is calculated to be direct cost for administering and reviewing the background process, or how much is charged to overhead. Ummm ... The words manage, direct, operate, etc are not explicitly there. If adult registration is only $50 and it includes a background check and maybe I need to buy a T-shirt and I would be allowed to go to all of the campouts no matter how long they last, be assured that every other adult that is there has had a background, plus it includes insurance then it should be a requirement for even 1 hour at a campsite.

TCC has withdrawn their request for an ombudsman for voting and agreed that no further delay is required. The first part of this paragraph is a bit unsettling. @ThenNowand other adult survivors like myself are not taking camps from kids or causing higher costs rather it was the actions of sexual predators that are the cause and the neglect of the organization to put proper controls in place in a timely manner. I do like the second part of your paragraph. The second person I told of my abuse was my teen age daughter. I wanted her to know that if something had or did happen to her not to be ashamed of it.

The common complaint is that BSA seems to have forgotten what scouts really enjoy about scouting. Call it the core program. Or better yet, The Game.
