  1. I found that skill awards made it a lot easier to locate scouts in the dark. You just listened for the clanking noise.

  2. What if this was years before the lawsuit and the LC's seeing that many of them have tens of millions in cash, decided to update and repair all scout camps in use? How great would that have been? There is no scout camp out there that could not use a few million dollars or more to get the camp in top condition. Then a well maintained camp would draw more use and make it more sustainable.

  3. One theory and I just wanna offer this out is that you don’t adjudicate or litigate what doesn’t need to be adjudicated or litigated. everything you described is true it could impact the final plan. But if the plan is overwhelmingly rejected we don’t have to worry about it. if the plan is such that it’s clearly accepted overwhelmingly then we can worry about the edge cases like maybe one or two councils here or there who may not be included. but I guess the argument is is you get the plan out the door and voted on and then decide how you want to slice the data. Do you want

  4. That's why it's critical that the older scouts who have mastered these skills be allowed to instruct and sign off. Scouts get quite enough of adults droning on and on at school. "He who teaches, learns twice"

  5. It seems like we diverted the topic a bit, but figure I'll jump in. I've been happy that our schools crack down on bullying and they are also very clear that bullying is different than being rude/unkind/having conflicts. Overall, schools are much more aware of actual bullying than they were when I was a kid. For many kids, our school systems have become much more safe than it was in the 1980s and prior. I do agree that there are overreactions by parents ... but schools seem to have found a balance and have been pretty good (at least in my area). What has gotten much, much worse i

  6. I like the poster. Rude and mean are great opportunities for growth, so don't throw the baby out with the bath water. My experience with scouts is that rude and mean are often in context where there's conflict between scouts. Showing them how to deal with the conflict has been more productive than focusing on rude and mean. I talked to a scout once about standing up to bullies and his response was enlightening. He said that there was very little to no bullying at his school and there was a lot more fuss about it by the adults than warranted. This was a fairly shy scout in a large public

  7. Here are some cold, hard, non-bankruptcy facts about the camps. BSA membership has been in decline for 30 years and freefall for the last 10. The entire LC camp system was developed at and in a time when BSA had literally MILLIONS more scouts that it did prior to 2019. Then LDS left. Then the bankruptcy. Then COVID. The LCs didn't need to dump millions into making ALL camps in use pretty. They needed to come to face the reality: sell some and use the proceeds to refurbish the rest. Much of the cash being spent now is endowment funds. NO ONE likes to spend down an endowm

  8. Judge: I do NOT have 3 days in January. I cannot give BSA 3 days in January today. BSA's "we are running out of cash" cries. "Debtors, I cannot give you what you want." Say goodbye to the Methodists. This takes it past December 31. That makes it official. And BSA claimed it was out of cash so many times I don't think she buys it anymore.

  9. This poster hanging in a school is apropos for the discussion. As adults we could (and is likely it will happen in this thread) debate the language in the poster. But it does at a minimum help students make the distinction that not everything is bullying.

  10. Looking at my mid 80s Cub Scout books, the requirements for rank there has not changed much at all in that time period. The mechanisms for it all has changed, but the underlying work is almost identical.
