  1. Troop was at summer camp last week. We had 20 + Scouts and 5 leaders. Total of about 1,000 Scouts, 150 leaders, 125 staff (+/-) in camp. Nice to be back after running our own camp last year Program ran like normal, which was good No cohorts or group requirements Some changes to food service, but not onerous The camp was somewhat short staffed Main challenge was college aged Scouts as colleges had reduced tuitions for the summer Also pay challenges with other businesses paying more and jobs plentiful Talked with leaders and most (li

  2. I agree about "don't know exactly what I expected from council but it would have been nice to see them make an effort". It seems the council felt virtual was the best thing ever and the less they had to do. Could still raise money, still pay salaries, close the camps so money saved there but no real PROGRAM input. Candidly we don't really need them, so over the years we don't look to district or council for anything but filing paperwork. And they wonder why we don't sell popcorn or really care about FOS

  3. You are correct that money cannot cure everything. However restitution for pain, mental suffering, loss of possible wages (personally I think I underachieved in this life because of the abuse), my daughters suffering from my emotional unavailability (if there is enough restitution at some point she will benefit) and the fact I realize now I might need mental care the rest of my lifetime so restitution/money won't cure me but it will make my life easier. Are you so naive to think that the BSA ever cared for those of us who were abused? Did they ever reach out and say hey we have issues

  4. A couple of posts - @CynicalScouter, @mrjohns2 - referenced no change to board structure/governance. There is, however, a big push to change the composition of the National Board, first by shrinking it to 40 (from 72 I think), to include fully 1/2 of its membership from local councils, who will represent not only geographic diversity via the NSTs but also diversity of size, enabling some membership from councils that would never have had a voice before, my own included. I am not sure the status of that at the moment, but it sounded like several dozen councils were on board with that.

  6. Yes. In the end, tort law is about who is liable for the damage and what is the value of that damage. In the context of property damage, it is easier to choke down (what is the value of damage to the car in the fender bender?). In the context of human lives, it is harder but the language remains the same. What is the value of an arm severed in an industrial accident? The value of mesothelioma in a person exposed to asbestos? And here, yes, the value of certain sexual actions committed against minors. In the legal filings they are called the "Base Matrix Value" or "Maximum Matrix Value".

  8. Well, here's more than you probably want to know below. I'd guess that the attorneys representing a majority of claimants and have been involved with mediation would say that they are making a substantial contribution by getting to a settlement that the majority would vote for. Please don't make me explain the thinking of attorneys beyond that! It IS something that is objected to but the cost of the objection could add the fees if the objection didn't prevail. At any rate, here's the code in part from: https://www.jonesday.com/en/insights/2012/06/construing-substantial-contribution-under-

  12. All of the main financial data is available online. The problem is that there is no one, single reason for the increase. Insurance premiums have skyrocketed in the last 10 years, but that may be due to the sexual abuse cases, summer camps, some combination, etc. https://www.scouting.org/about/annual-report/financial-statements/ https://www.scouting.org/about/annual-report/

  13. I don't see any rules or in fact any problems with this. The boy got to do stuff with the older scouts and hopefully had fun. Maybe that will excite him to join the troop when he is old enough. It would have been worse if he attended and didn't get to do anything. He might have decided Troops are boring and don't want him. I don't understand the point about why they should have informed you. Any of your scouts should feel comfortable visiting any troop at anytime, not just when there is an invitation. My advice would be to let it go, it is all good.

  15. (deleted) Sorry, but I am simply tired of the BS of somehow thinking money can cure everything. (deleted). Just my opinion, and I understand you suffered considerable based on what you have shred. Not to be crude, but if someone said here is a billion dollars, now leave it alone, would that somehow cure you? I doubt it, but you, and others with similar stories would have simply had a hand in causing harm to others through the unfeeling system of vengeance. Again, just my perspective, and it applies not just to this unfortunate case. Vengeance at the expense of others who had no hand in
