  1. So my circa 2006 Gateway Win Vista laptop finally died and I've resorted back to my more modern desktop running Win 10. Trying to use scouter.com is very painful now...literally 30 seconds with each mouse click while all the ads load. Video ads embedded in individual posts??? Is that what we are doing now? The little bar at the lower left corner always says "Waiting for www.scouter.com".... Am I doing something wrong? This is unusable in its current state. I would pay a nominal fee if there was a premium ad-free version. I hate to complain, because I do appreciate the efforts o

  2. Yes, one hundred time yes. And I would argue that there is no serious correlation between knots and leadership or ability. Some units nominate people, some do not.

  3. Understood. Now let's be honest. The scouts and their parents aren't looking at the number of knots on the uniform. That is only something that other leaders will look at. I have plenty of knots and know other leaders with none and with a ton. It doesn't affect me and if that is what people are focusing on, they need a reset.

  4. My original comment was in response to another comment about the message that the scout sees when a uniform is or is not correct. I picked weight becasue it is an easy visual, as is looking at a uniform. And regarding first impressions, I agree, same as how some might feel about the number of knots.

  5. The first question I ask myself, is "is this my business?" In most cases, the answer is NO. I chose to wear my uniform fully and correctly, which is what I did since earning my Bobcat pin in 1963, and would line up my insignia using that guide on the inside covers of the Handbook. We once had a District Advancement Chairman who wore TWO Scouter Key knots...with no devices. I never said anything to him...not my business. We are all just volunteers trying to deliver the program.

  7. I had noticed the very same thing; it took me five minutes to get logged on this morning. It seems to be working much better now though already.

  9. I don't know Latin Scot, I've watch a lot of scouts ask adults about their knots with a real curiosity. You may be offended with the appearance, but a lot of folks are very passionate about their scouting experiences and express it different ways. I agree with qwaze that when folks push the guidelines, "neat appearance" should be the overall guideline. I once watched a one legged scouter at the Council Scout Show, show off his wooden peg leg that had dozens of scout camp brands and signatures all over it. If a scout asked kindly, he might even let them sign it. He was very popular with th

  10. The lack of speed seems to be new today. I have had no issues reading or posting lately, including yesterday.

  12. Boy, I feel as if I have covered this topic SO MANY TIMES over the past few years ... but suffice it to say, I think that to ask "what's the harm?" is to ask the wrong question. The better question is to ask "what message am I sending to the youth and to other leaders by the way I wear my uniform and its insignia?" When I see somebody with enough knots to make a third-world general blush, I don't feel any sense of awe, nor admiration; nor am I ever curious to know the "stories and experiences" that they feel I should be eager to hear with reverent ears. All I can think to myself is "a Sc

  13. It's a volunteer activity - uniforms can be a fun way for a volunteer to share something of their story. If someone wears 0 knots, 3 knots, or 20 knots - I don't see the harm. I say - if you've got the knot, wear it if you want. We should not be making people feel guilty about wearing their knots and sharing a little about their journey.

  14. All fixed. I'd say wear the knots you'd like. I don't even know if there are any rules. I've heard suggestions before. At this point in time, I don't understand why disagreements should get past just that. Some people like lots of rows and some don't. End of discussion.

  15. Even I have to admit that practicing their marksmanship skills with live torpedoes might have been slightly over-the-top.

  16. Yep National would throw a coniption fit if some of the things Scouts used to do back in the day were done today. One of the SM's told me about his Sea Scout days where his ship spent a month, month and a half travelling from Little Creek VA to Maine and back to pick up their new vessel: a decommissioned WWII PT boat. They traveled by train to Maine, repaired the PT boat to make pass USCG inspection, then steamed her down the east coast with stops along the way. And they spent the 4-6 weeks and time on the ocean without any adults.

  17. I haven't read the full thread (work conference call in a few minutes) but an observation from here in the UK. I run a coed troop and a few years ago we had a joint meeting with the Girl Guide troop who use our building. And sure enough some of my boys started acting up in just the way you describe. And this was inspite of them all already having girls in their patrols and the troop more widely. In addition the both in scouts and guides were girls they went to school with. My observation is the problem isn't girls as such. The problem is girls in an unfamiliar situation. Put the girl

  18. I came in to read about the new membership numbers tonight. Sunday was our Scout Sunday. Then we had a Pack Meeting in the afternoon. Had a Webelos Den Meeting tonight. I think if I can limit my time around the adults I will be ok. Does that make sense?
