  1. Just a reminder, our bankruptcy is because BSA waited way too long to install hearty youth protection from abuse. Many of us (myself included) used to laugh at that … then a co worker of mine, an Eagle Scout and Vigil Honor member, got to visit Club Fed for child pedophilia. I remember calling the Council Director of Support Services as the word of the arrest (it was at work and public) filtered through our workforce. When I got him, he had been tipped off by the US Attorney, and was already preparing the severance letter. I've never laughed about YP since.

  2. Sometimes it depends on who's doing the asking. I was CC for the better part of 4 years for our Pack before taking over as CM for most of our final year until my son earned his AOL and crossed over. One of the hardest jobs I had as CC was to fill the open committee positions, and I had a lot more say "No" than say "Yes", but what really bugged me after the fact was that many of the parents that said no to me, said yes to my replacement. It turns out that they were all very close friends outside of Scouts, and I was an outsider to them, so it became more of a club for them and an excuse to

  3. Part of my job as a Senior Attorney, General Attorney, and Council at Bell and its successor entities involved ensuring compliance with the consent decree by which the System ceased to exist. I was, for a time, the Corporate Secretary for the Bell entity in Ohio, The Ohio Bell Telephone Company, and officially reviewed hundreds of pages of the documents involved in the breakup and signed and sealed the company's acknowledgements of receipt. I then helped draft "how to" memos to management to help them comply. The anti-trust case had gone on since 1974 and had been before three successi

  4. I think this is the advantage of working the patrol method in the face of contemporary youth protection requirements. If a troop with three independent patrols needs two registered 21+ year-old adults to chaperon each them when they are doing separate activities. It's unrealistic to have the SM and the same ASM at every patrol activity and meeting and troop activity and meeting plus round table and training -- even if those two adults are able to keep to themselves and maybe attend rountable online while the Flaming Arrows are refurbishing their Klondike derby sled. If you get parents to "buy

  5. Rarely people step up. Pleas for volunteers being ignored is common in most organizations and systems. Recruiting adults (and scouts) effectively requires personal invitations. All recruitment is Cheap, Easy, Effective... choose only 2.

  6. I could not find the quote you posted, but it's been a long night in an ice storm. You are right about lighting the candle instead of curing the darkness. When I was teaching SM Specific, the two questions that came up often during the course were discipline and dealing with bad leadership. The challenge for adults is developing the patience to not take over before the scouts learns enough about themselves to know where they have to change. It's not just leadership that is the challenge, it's personal habits of behavior. I found that most scouts will accomplish the will of the adul

  7. Leadership Development is a method of scouting. Here is an opportunity for SM and ASM's to develop leadership skills in their SPL and ASPL and set expectations*. Breaking down a problem and competition between groups to solve a problem could help ...hmm Patrol Method. 8. The fears are real and founded. We need to be empathetic to the kids. In my experience, what is needed is to pose the problem of not having meetings being a problem that needs to be solved. Let them know the problem and maybe even some solutions that have worked for other units. Ask and listen to their ideas and solutions. I am not doubting that your husband is already doing this BTW. In my experience if they feel they own the problem they will come up with a solution that they will fight for. We are much smaller than a troop but we have been able to meet in small groups, mask

  9. Youth all over are having a hard time with this and are coping with it differently. Be aware some kids are not so much afraid of getting it themselves but may be living with high risk adults and are very fearful of bringing anything home to them. They may not want to verbalize that they are freaked out over losing mom or dad, especially if they are teens. The cold might be more of a convenient excuse in that case. Many kids are also totally done with zoom. Maybe encourage them to think less 'meet' and more is there anything safe and fun they can do as an outdoor activity at least

  11. Moderator note. Some of those executive claim links have not redacted home addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses, so I hid post. @CynicalScouter if you want to re-post just those redacted claim links e.g. Mosby and Surbaugh that should be fine. Thanks, RS @MattR @John-in-KC

  12. At this point, from an objective viewpoint, it seems like every CO group ought to be doing the same thing out of sense of self preservation -- American Legions, Volunteer Fire Departments, VFWs, private schools. I don't know if others were anticipating this but it seems like a mess on top of a mess to me.

  14. This would explain why the Florida Methodist Churches came in recently. Remember how I previously said that this does NOT end with BSA liquidated because the Congressional Charter will save the shell? Yeah, now more than ever I believe that. The COs will throw national and especially the Councils under any and all available buses. National and the Councils are going to lose every tangible asset.

  16. This is how our council trained us. When I received my BSA shooting sports training (now 10+ years ago ... I have to remember things right), we effectively became council volunteers. This allowed us to open ranges just for our pack. I know another trainer created a range for temporary use per the BSA shooting sports manual for his pack. But, he was functioning as a council / district representative at that point and having an event just for just his pack. I remember being invited multiple times to help district / council similar events.

  17. Offer your equipment for sale to the families and CO membership. Spend that cash and every cent in the treasury on the biggest blow out fully catered no holds barred CoH. If there's any equipment or cash left tell council to come and take it. They arent going to lawyer up over it. Hell they wont even force a DE to visit the CO.

  18. Units aren't allowed to solicit funds in the name of scouting. This is just one of many contradictions in BSA policy. Units cannot raise funds in the name of scouting, but unit funds belong to BSA because they were raised in the name of scouting. Pure self-serving double-talk. BSA is just trying to intimidate CO's into turning over their property. Or, worst yet, BSA is encouraging unit leaders to steal camping equipment from their former CO's.

  19. Last night we had an adult leader meeting. Our CM has been very busy with work and family responsibilities. We gave her a report on our successful Summit Merit Badge Camp and Northern Tier trip. We did Philmont last year and she asked us to compare it to Northern Tier. They're very different adventures. I loved Philmont and Northern Tier. One thing that was common about Summit and NT this year was the lack of program. I know some won't want to hear this, but it was a great thing. Hear me out. Normally at Summit they have evening program. This year, the scouts were free to do wh

  20. I remember one campout camped beside a creek with a little spring flowing off of it, probably two feet wide at mos. Our scouts must have spend two to three hours trying to dam up the creek with sticks, stones, etc. They finally formed a little pool and were so proud of their engineering feat. Then they dismantled it to get it back to natural. We couldn't have planned a better activity if we tried! Dale
